How can someone tell if their loft is suitable for conversion?
There are various factors to consider including the suitability of your ceiling joists, having adequate head-height within the roof space, and being able to re-arrange the existing home to include a staircase that meets fire standards.
You should also consider where your project is based. Are you in a conservation zone, Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, or a National Park? If so, you may be limited by what you can include without Planning Permission.
Run us through the different stages in the loft conversion process - what’s involved?
As with the majority of projects, we would begin by reviewing the project brief, exploring the existing plans, and organising a Measured Building Survey of the space. A desktop Feasibility Study will confirm the loft is suitable for conversion.
A structural survey carried out by a Structural Engineer will likely be needed to confirm if an upgrade to the joists is required and to provide the correct specification.
Design work will be carried out at this stage until the customers approves the design. At which point drawings can be prepared for any required statutory applications such as Planning or Building Control. A Scope of Works can be prepared for a Builder to use to provide a quote for the works.
What do you love most about your job?
I love the challenge of design and finding creative solutions to make spaces work better. Awkward layouts, dark corners, or small rooms might seem like obstacles, but they can be opportunities. Solving these problems in a way that feels effortless and natural is incredibly satisfying, especially when it transforms how people experience their homes. Seeing a space go from frustrating to functional (and beautiful!) is what makes my job so rewarding.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I wanted the freedom to shape the creative process from start to finish. Designing a home isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about how people live, move, and feel in a space. Having my own business allows me to work closely with clients, explore thoughtful solutions, and ensure every project is guided by both practicality and personality. That creative independence is what drives me.
Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.
Getting to explore and experience a place is important to architectural design but not always a necessity for small projects. If measurements can be provided digitally, and then with video calling, the majority of the work can be carried out remotely.
