Sean was invited to give us a quote for fixing a fence panel and concrete posts which had become dislodged by tree roots.
He spent a good amount of time examining the job in question and reassured us that it could be done using the existing materials. He talked of digging out and reseating the concrete posts and using a chainsaw to cut back roots and vegetation so that the fence panel could be aligned correctly. He seemed to be professional and we accepted his quote of £450 for what he said was a two man job. (We would normally have sought at least one more quote, but after a recent bereavement we had other things on our mind).
Sean and his workmate arrived later than planned on Friday 13th August. Despite having spent some time examining the job before quotation, Sean did not have an extension lead long enough to do the job and so had to borrow one from us. It was lucky we were in.
Later there was a requirement for a saw. Not only had they not brought a chainsaw with them as previously discussed, their only handsaw had apparently been damaged by concrete the previous day and was blunt!! My poor husband had to jump out of the shower, get dressed and go looking for his own saw. Meanwhile Sean just stood there waiting.
During the 3 hours Sean and his workmate spent in our garden there were cigarette breaks and phone conversations had whilst sitting on our garden furniture. One of the conversations was so heated it could be heard through our double glazed doors.
So after 3 hours of less than intensive work they had finished. The result was not good. Yes the posts were straighter and the fence panel had been attached to them in a fashion, but there was a huge gap underneath. Sean’s attempt to fill this gap with old bits of wood and concrete slabs just made it look worse. Neither my husband nor my neighbour were very happy but Sean maintained it was the best he could do using the existing materials. This begs the question- why did he support doing so in the first place and why didn’t he explain that It would result in such a bad job? Had he done so we would have asked for a new fence panel to be used. He also said he did not bring a chainsaw with him because he did not want to undermine the tree by cutting through the roots. So what had changed his mind between quoting for the job and arriving on the day?
Having not done, or not been able to do the extent of the work he had quoted for, we expected that the invoice which arrived that afternoon would reflect this. Sadly it did not. When we emailed back to say we would have expected a reduction, there was no reply.
Early that evening there was an extremely loud bang on the door. It was Sean wanting to discuss the fence and his payment. My husband went with him round to the back to look at the fence. My son expressed concern for his father’s welfare so I thought I better join them. It was clear that Sean was not going to admit responsibility for the poor job or make any allowance for it in what he was charging. I told him that we were not happy with the fence, that he had turned up ill equipped and that I did not appreciate them smoking in my garden or sitting on my garden furniture whilst making phone calls. His reply was to say it was nonsense, to take a video of me in my distress and to threaten trespass and criminal damage. We have paid him.

Were sorry you feel this way, 2 options were provided 1. Our new materials 2. Your old materials You chose to use option 2. to make the costs as low as possible were sorry if your old panels did not meet your standards. • Our team our polite and did not mean to upset your garden by smoking and sitting on your bench if we new this was not aloud we would have stoped asap, we apologise for this. • We apologise for using your exstention lead that we did now ask for but that you offered us we would have never accpeted if we new it would cause offence. • I think the 80ft + tree needs removing before you try installing a new fence panel, this did effect the quilty of the installation of your 10 year + panel as the stump was alot bigger then we all exspected. • We did provide a discount of £50 to try and please. • No criminal damage threats were made Kind regards Hartley gardens

After having 3 other companies let me down and not want to cut the tree so close to my house, I’m so glad it was Sean and his climber that took on the task. The guys were SO efficient and quick getting the tree down despite windy conditions and branches over hanging the roof of my house, they made light work of it. They were really polite and respectful of my neighbours, even after some of them complained about the noise. They were happy to compromise and move the wood chipper away from their house to keep the noise levels down, I really couldn’t have asked for better people to get the job done.
