It is important to hire someone who has an in-depth understanding of the tax rules. At the end of the day, it's the tax bill at the end that most people care about.
A good adviser also provides a professional service. They keep you in the loop with what's going on, are personable, communicate with you, and take the 'tax weight' off your shoulders and give you one less thing to think about. It is always worth spending more for a good adviser, so that you can pay less overall. Cheap accountants are costly in ways that aren't always obvious.
