How can someone tell if their Garage is suitable for conversion?
Before converting a garage, ensure that the structure is sound, with walls, roof, and foundation in good condition. The ceiling should ideally be 2.4 meters high for insulation and comfort, and you may need to install windows or a connecting door for access and light. While planning permission isn’t usually required, exceptions apply to listed buildings or major alterations. Building regulations must still be followed, covering areas like fire safety and insulation, and utilities such as electricity and water may need to be added, which can increase costs. Consulting a professional ensures the conversion meets all requirements.
How can someone tell if their loft is suitable for conversion?
For a loft conversion, you'll need at least 2.2 meters from the floor to the ceiling at the highest point, which will give you 1.9 meters of headroom after finishing. A steeper roof pitch (ideally 30 degrees or more) provides more headroom and simplifies the conversion. Traditional framed roofs are easier to modify than pre-formed trusses. The floor space should be large enough to create a functional room, and there must be enough space for a staircase on the first floor. In older homes, obstacles like water tanks or chimneys may need to be removed or considered in the design. Lastly, planning permission requirements vary depending on your location.
