Running your own business isn't easy, don't let anybody ever tell you otherwise, but even in the tough times it is immensely satisfying. You are immediately accountable for every decision and action and have to accept the consequences, whether it's right or wrong. I love that.

Developing people and determining the direction of the business is also very rewarding. The road is rarely straight, people have their own ambitions, but bringing everything together so that the business can constantly evolve is very stimulating.

And, of course, I'm never very far away from the clients and applying my core skills and experience as a professional marketer for over 30 years. Sharing that knowledge, joining in strategic discussions and seeing our activities turn into meaningful results for our clients, is probably the best pay-back of all.

Starting my own business was something that had burned away inside me for several years before making the leap from corporate life. Like many people, I liked the idea of being my own boss (perhaps not realising that the client is the most demanding boss of all!), but more importantly, I wanted to be judged and rewarded directly for my abilities and effort.

In founding The Marketing Eye, I saw an opportunity to create an agency with a specialist focus and applied everything good that I had learned in corporate life with the flexibility and freedom that comes with being an entrepreneur. 11 years on, we're still here, and still learning!

For me, the best references that we get from our clients are when they comment on our honesty. Nothing pleases me more than a client saying that we have the courage to tell them what we think and that we don't over-promise and under-deliver. Good consultancy is advising and guiding the client, not just taking instructions.

We know our business, we have many years of combined experience and we have delivered some excellent results for clients seeking to scale up, but we are also sleeves-rolled-up pragmatists that buy into our clients' businesses and objectives. Marketing is not an exact science, growth can be inconsistent, and when the going feels a little bit tough, you need a partner by your side that has the experience to keep you on the right path.
