Lovely food, excellent service, friendly staff. Would definitely recommend
rooms are great. very relaxing atmosphere and all the staff are very friendly, helpful and make the stay enjoyable.
Beautiful place. Clean and comfortable. Service was excellent. The food was made in good time and well presented. Only downside side is there is only one vegetarian option. A nut roast for a main would have made my day. The only vegetarian starter and main both had mushrooms and they take me ill. But being they were my only choice, that what I had. My partners a meat eater and his food looked great and he really enjoyed it. Will definitely go back, but it might only be for drinks and cake until more vegetarian options are available. More...
Fantastic service very welcoming and attentive and the food is outstanding great new menu!
Celebrating special occasion together for an evening meal. Ambiance, decor, drinks, food, service all amazing.
I always look forward to my visit to Poet's House dining room. The room is lovely. The background music is just the right level. The food and service are always good. More...
This was a special occasion and did not disappoint. Will be returning.
probably the best quality Sunday lunch I have ever had. Absolutely beautiful tasting food from start to finish
Superb food, service, menu and a great evening had by all. Thank you! We will be back soon.
Felt to made very welcomed the staff were very friendly made to feel at home. The food was outstanding enjoyed all 3 courses would definitely recommend and will definitely visit again. Thank you for a lovely evening.
Good quality food well presnted in relaxed environment.
Lovely hotel. Would recommend it.
lovely experience for afternoon tea. dietary requirements were catered for brilliantly and food was delicious!
We had our wedding at poets house it was such an amazing day nothing was to much for Christine and her team. From the very first meeting Christine was on hand every step of the way and I cannot thank her enough for all her support. Thank you to all the staff at poets house you all helped make our special day so special More...
Service and food were good, but we felt the menu was limited and unimaginative, it was also over priced.
Late booking (15:30 for a 18:30) table for 3, including an older child. Arrived early to have a drink in the bar before sitting in the restaurant. Poet's House Fizz for the adults, soft drink for the child. The Cocktail Menu is quite extensive and worth a look at even if not eating in the restaurant. As always the service was excellent, even with a supervised/trainee waiter in the restaurant. Wine selection was limited but good quality, we selected an Appasimento which for the price in the restaurant is better than expected. Food was delivered quickly but not rushed and was excellent. One of the best restaurants in the local area with a bar / cocktail menu to match. More...
We come here on special occasions, as the quality is so good - but obviously you have to pay for it :-) Lovely background jazz, great decor, and very nice cocktails and cuisine. The attention to detail in the starters and dessert (colours, design, flavour balance, textures, choice of ingredients) was particularly impressive. More...
Great decor and ambience, polite and efficient staff from meet and greet into dining room, great timings between all courses. Starters and main courses well presented and tasty, both our desserts where a let down, wild honey Panna cotta with little honey flavour and Vanilla cheesecake, no vanilla flavour evident.Thank you for helping Us celebrate our engagement More...
We had a wonderful evening celebrating our son’s GCSE results. The dining room was quiet, beautifully decorated, extremely clean and with the separate areas, it feels private without being closed away. Suitable for romantic evenings or large parties. The waiter was friendly and professional and ecwryrhing about the evening made us feel very comfortable and looked after. More...
One of the very best places to eat in the region, with superb dishes. Each item on the plate is clearly well thought out and compliments the rest of the dish and each ingredient looks and tastes fresh and of excellent quality. The drinks are of equal quality, with a great wine menu and the cocktails are out of this world great! Atmosphere and decor lives up to the high standards of the food and drink too. Can't fault any of the above, really is perfect. Only real negative is the service. The very young (likely 18 on minimum wage) waitress was trying, but clearly lacks experience and was woefully out of her depth. This was a real let down I'm afraid and is a stark contrast with the rest of the experience as above. A side / minor issue... They don't take American Express! Small thing, but very surprising for this type of establishment and rather disappointing. I'd go back again in the future, but if the service was just as poor that'd be my last time to be honest. I'll also be nagging about the AMEX as that's a big thing for me personally. For great good, drink and atmosphere this place is perfect. Just don't expect the same from the service where I suspect management have gone cheap and found the best waitress they can who's willing to take £6.15 an hour (18 - 20 year old min wage) More...
Lovely venue and staff. Music could have been more lively in bar. Background music needed in restaurant. Only disappointment was the lack of variety and choice on the menu. Very sparse offering although the food was very good. More...
Excellent food all round in surroundings which were peaceful and relaxing.
Excellent in all ways highly recommended
We were celebrating a special birthday & the restaurant was perfect for that, lovely decoration and the setting is lovely. The staff was very attentive and did a birthday cake too. We were all happy with our food choices, maybe a few more vegan options would be welcome. The restaurant is within walking distance of the stunning Ely Cathedral. Parking was in a public parking area, close by and free on a Sunday. Highly recommend More...
Very pleasant relatively quiet Sunday lunch. Good quality food well cooked, well presented by very pleasant waiter. Nice table with a view of the green and Cromwell's house. Background music not intrusive.
Five of us had a variety of main courses, all of which were very good indeed. The only problem we had was a deadline... we were going to a concert and it was not fast service. I think everything was cooked to order so that’s perhaps not surprising. We should probably have advised them early on! More...
A birthday surprise, a group of 5 ladies. We loved the ambience of the bar and restaurant area. The food was exceptional and the service outstanding and very personal. Would highly recommend a visit.
Everything was just lovely. Really made us feel welcome and catered very well for our gluten/ dairy free diet. Asked for deserts outside and they were very happy to do this for us. Friendly staff and very informed regarding the menu. The menu was great and everything cooked to perfection! More...
Lovely birthday dinner for two whilst staying at the Poets House Hotel. They had asked if it was a special occasion but the Happy Birthday desert was a completed surprise. Thank you for making it a evening to remember. More...
A wonderful dining experience. Service was excellent. Food very tasty. Will definitely recommend it to my friends.
Very good central local, and the external building is stunning, food was good, menu and wine list of a good standard, service was good and professional but the Resturant and bar is short staffed no fault of the waiting staff they kept it going, this place could be amazing with a few more staff, well worth a visit, we will visit again thank you to all the staff
We had a lovely meal at the Poet's House. The staff were extremely attentive and even brought us a glass of prosecco on the house as it was a special occasion - My mum was visiting me after having surgery. We really enjoyed the meal and the relaxed atmosphere in the bar and restaurant. The cocktails were very tasty! The meal was really nice and presented well, but the menu options were quite easy, considering the prices. I wouldn't really consider it a la carte. Having said this, I would recommend the Poet's House for the ambience and the level of service from the staff. More...
Very nice meal and lovely ambience. Service would very good. I would recommend.
Lovely main courses and outstanding desserts. Good service, good wine list, nice atmosphere.
My wife and I went to Poet’s house for our wedding anniversary, and couldn’t have had a nicer meal. The food was excellent, the staff were great and we will be going back for sure!
Fine dining, nice atmosphere.A little let down by the staff, as they aren’t as fine as you would expect in such a restaurant of that standard. A warmer welcome would be appreciated. More...
Service was faultless and the food outstanding. Quite expensive but worth it, more of a place to go as a treat than a regular place to eat.
Always a great experience and great food!
Have been here for lunch and dinner before and booked for a Boxing Day meal. Superb day with family enjoying the food and the service. The staff are really attentive and look after you. Beautiful setting. Great food and really good drinks menu. Thoroughly recommend for any occasion. More...
Had an excellent Sunday lunch here. The service was very good and the dining room had a lovely atmosphere. All our food was well presented and delicious .
A wonderful lunch to start our Christmas celebrations.
I love the venue. The food is good, but the service and finer details could be improved slightly do this great place justice.
Great food and friendly service, unfortunately they got our order wrong and couldn’t put it right. They said they wouldn’t charge, but due to the set menu, it made no difference to the bill
Had a lovely evening with friends in a very relaxed setting. Good food and wine and great service.
Fantastic venue with attentive and knowledgeable staff, made the experience all the more enjoyable that our waiter had sommelier level wine knowledge. Very impressed all round, food was great, atmosphere was friendly and relaxed and the building is beautiful. Will be back. More...
This is a fabulous venue that provides provides very good food and service in a fabulous environment. Surprisingly low priced as well.
Ate here on two nights whilst stopping at the hotel. Normally we give hotel restaurants a wide b=erth but this was an exception. The food was imaginative and well cooked, service friendly and attentive without intruding. The ambience is elegant and restrained but not overbearingly full of itself. The maitre d' Chris was a charming host More...
Really good food and service. We very much enjoyed our evening. Thankyou
Lovely staff & delicious food.Quiet, calm ambience. Can recommend the liqueur coffees - beautifully made & delicious!!
This dining room was tastefully decorated which made the whole experience of dining some excellent dishes memorable. Service was excellent and the staff most helpful
Took some London friends to Poets House for Sunday lunch. Great location opposite Ely Cathedral and lovely decor. Food was great and service very good. A gem in Ely.
Birthday celebrations were perfect here.Suprise bubbles on arrival, lovely cocktails and amazingly presented food and delicious.
Just leaving after a wonderful one night stay for our belated 21st anniversary and birthdays. Such a lovely hotel. Room was superb and the copper bath was amazing
Comfortable bed with squashy pillows and beautiful rainwater shower room
Food almost masterchef status and a wonderful breakfast
Lovely lounge and all staff lovely
Hope to return soon to my birth town xx More...
This was our 2nd stay at Poets House, it is now under different owners but everything else is just as good. Room was lovely and the view of the Cathedral was good. Breaffast was very nice, all the staff were friendly and helpful. It is helpful to be able to hav your car parked and then returned when you are ready to leave. Will definitely be back again. My wife loves the copper bath in the room as well. More...
Poets a House is everything and more that I thought it would be. The rooms, staff the surroundings and especially the food was 5* There was a misunderstanding when we arrived and the young man who I asked about parking thought we had already booked in so alas we went and parked the car and then had to walk back in the rain lugging our suitcase and bags with us, we could have dropped them off! A mere drop in the ocean as the overall experience was superb ! More...
We love this hotel, it's a real gem . We've just had our wedding reception here and also stayed here for 2 nights along with several family members and some friends and it was truly amazing. The events planner Christine is a joy to deal with and all planning went smoothly and was fun. This is a beautiful and very tastefully decorated hotel throughout, the rooms are gorgeous especially the huge copper baths , deluxe bed linen and comfy beds. The food is delicious , this includes breakfast which there is loads of choice and lots of it . The layout of the hotel lends itself to a lovely wedding venue using both inside and outside space ( weather pending of course we were lucky ) . If the weather isn't good the bar /lounge area is comfy and stylish. All staff are attentive, professional , friendly and helpful if you should have any issues. I would highly recommend this hotel for, drinks , food, weddings, parties etc, it's fantastic , we love it and we will be back ! More...

It has been a while since we visited Poets House but was very impressed with the food and service... We both started with great cocktails within the bar area and then opted for the 3 course meal at £30 a head. Starters, mains and desserts we all amazing, top quality food and presentation.... Thanks for having a vegan menu! Really enjoy dining with you last night, please consider adding a vegan pud and I’ll be back for 3 courses! xx
Attended an 'Ely Wine Events' do here, so can't comment on Poet's House itself - except to say it is a stylish, well situated venue and Harvey provided very professional and charming service
My mum and I called in to the bar at Poets House on our way home. Despite only having a glass of wine each, we were well-tended too and did not have to wait at all to be served at our table.
As always the decor was fantastic and the atmosphere was fantastic. It was also lovely to see the happiness from a 40th party leaving from the function room. Many other people had enjoyed an afternoon tea, and couldn't eat it all.
I last visited here for my dad's birthday breakfast- so it was fantastic to experience another time of day. More...
Would have been 5 * but there was no shaver / toothbrush socket in the bathroom and when we asked about it at reception we were told we would just have to walk into town and buy an adaptor!
Ok an oversight when renovating the rooms but would it be diff for the hotel to have a supply of adaptors which their guests could use!
Everything else was perfect! The rooms were beautiful and the food was amazing!
Staff were friendly and other than the shaver problem couldn’t have been more helpful.
This problem let you down tho -!!!!
Not how we expected to be treated in this class of hotel! More...
Had a lovely time. Beautiful room, great food and lovely staff. Thank you for making our stay special.
Went for champagne afternoon tea this afternoon, the staff were so kind and funny and couldn’t do enough for us! Makes you want to go back and we will
Lovely place. Staffed really well, friendly but not intrusive. Food was lovely but could only eat 2 courses as we were full. One salmon and one pate starters followed by confi duck which we would have again it was that nice. Good selection of wine. Would be happy to go again when in the area. Would of rated it a 5 if they had spaced the diners out a little. More...
We have just been for our first visit to Poets House in Ely for my Birthday treat and we will definitely be back. Wonderful Afternoon Tea made even nicer by the relaxed atmosphere and extremely lovely friendly staff that make you feel very welcome and not rushed at all.
Can't wait to go back, we would definitely recommend a visit. Thank you :)

My husband surprised me with a stay here last night for our Wedding Anniversary. I can not fault one thing. Everything from the cocktails, the room, our meal and breakfast were all first class. Christine had arranged flowers, champagne and chocolates (which had been handmade by the chef) in the room for our arrival. We had a fabulous evening and will definitely be returning. Thank you to all at Poets House for making our stay so special. More...
The hotel is in a great location with views over looking the cathedral in Ely.The restaurant is sophisticatedly decorated, with plenty of space between the tables, creating privacy for each party. The service from the moment we arrived to the time we left was too a very high standard. The menu was varied and appealed to a wide audience. The Food was presented well and delivered on taste, quality and quantity.I would recommend this restaurant for afternoon tea and a special occasion. More...
Overall experience was good, its very nice place, well layered out tables with good amount privacy not too disturbing, good ambient music and good service. Yet me and my date has special dietary requirements which wasn't considered at all even though the restaurant was informed a week ago. So my choices of food were very limited the food was still good. I wouldn't say it was brilliant but up to good standards. More...
good food well cooked, overall good value, menu a little limited, staff young and need a little more training.happy to recommend and we will visit again.
We had a really lovely lunch and the service was second to none. Nothing was too much trouble. The decor is stunning, as is the bar area and the garden. We will definately be returning. Thank you! More...
The Poet's House in possibly the best location in Ely - looking out across the green to the front of the magnificent Norman cathedral. The hotel staff are very friendly and helpful, and the suite we stayed in was stylish and well equipped. The restaurant is also a stylish space with friendly staff. The food is of a high quality and, whilst not being top restaurant standard, gives an interesting range of dishes. For example, they had an eel starter on when we were there and it was delicious. My only complaint about the restaurant is the wine list, which lacks much choice or genuine quality. They also, in line with far too many mid to lower-top end restaurants, do not give the wine vintages on the wine list and sell their wines too young to be fully appreciated. More...
Absolutely wonderful, the food was great, the service was friendly and very helpful. I ate vegan including the wine and it was fantastic, something different. Yes would definitely recommend a visit More...
Smoked haddock starter was amazing but the steak from the Specials menu was not that inspired and sadly had more sinewy bits that ought to have been trimmed out by the butcher or chef - not by me! Full English breakfast was very tasty but the home made baked beans were not for me. More...
The food was very good indeed, and we were provided with Gluten free options for the two diners who have an intolerance. Only real complaint was a mix up of menus - which meant we had to re-order twice - but the waiting staff handled it very well and were friendly and patient. We went there for a Birthday meal for my Dad and he was very happy. More...
We booked this restaurant for Mothering Sunday; although we live in Ely this was the first time we have been but we would thoroughly recommend Poets House again. Wonderful welcome upon arrival and beautiful live piano playing in the background. Our coats were taken and we were then taken to a beautiful dining room, which was wonderfully laid. Our Mum received a special plant, which was a great touch for her (and us!).The food was delicious - all three courses. I had goats' cheese starter with fish for main and a side of fries, which was all exquisitely cooked and beautifully presented. Dessert was particularity great for everyone - despite the very posh sounding names! The four of us had: pineapple and caramel trifle, treacle tart and white chocolate mouse.Service great. Good wine list too. More...
We dined in the restaurant to celebrate my father’s 80th birthday. It was all very good and considering that it is what I would term ‘a classy’ place to eat we were shocked and not very happy that the cleaner was in hoovering and washing the floor in the hall right next to us. I have never ever been in a restaurant and experienced this. I asked the waitress to close the door which she did but really I feel the cleaning should have stopped, the smell of floor cleaner is not ideal whilst you are eating. We told the man who appeared to be the manager when we paid the bill and he was not at all amused and couldn’t apologise enough. Surely housekeeping duties take place before the customers come in? More...
Excellent food quality, only slight let down was that we had to continually ask for our water glass to be re filled, so just needs a bit more attention to detail
Beautiful decor and lovely atmosphere, service was great but the food was not as good as I thought it was going to be, which was such a shame.
Wonderful food. Gluten and lactose free available. Fantastic service. We would absolutely recommend.
My husband and I have wanted to try the poets house for some time so we finally booked it for our wedding anniversary, I must say it was definitely worth the wait. Lovely decor, very tasty food and friendly staff. We will most definitely come back. More...
Very polite and attentative staff. Food is very nice though a limted lunch time menu they did call to ask for any dietry requirements and the food came out in a very acceptable time.
We had a very enjoyable meal to celebrated my birthday and DAN, the chef came out and explained how our meal had been cooked which was a nice touch. ...he evening threw in some extra starters. More...
From beginning to end this was a total dining experience. The food was varied, very well cooked and beautifully presented. Thank you all
We could not fault the whole dining experience . Waiter went out of his way to help . I chose a dish that i wasnt keen on , purely my mistake . When i expressed that i wasnt happy with my choice , i was offerred another dish of my choice . And what a choice it was . The four of us enjoyed a unique dining experience , fantastic food , a fusion of differant flavours and presented so beautifully . Following our meal we moved into the bar and enjoyed cocktails . I strongly recommend the expresso martini . The hotel room was stunning . Breakfast wonderful , home made granola , fruit , toast and a fantastic cooked breakfast . We had a wonderful time and would highly recommend to anyone whom wants to experience decadence and fine dining ! More...
My husband took me to Poets House for a birthday meal - we had a lovely time. Wonderful food and service. We'll definitely be back,
Excellent Service and food. Good vegetarian options
Amazing food and even better staff!! Love this place!!
For a place with a reputation of being an upmarket boutique hotel and restaurant. The food was either like warm or cold and long waits between courses. Also told that chef was not the head chef, hence the problems. What an excuse!! More...
My wife and I visited Ely for just one night, not long enough! Our first choice of restaurant was full, I had used before . Poets House was able to over us a table and we could not have found better, will use again . More...
Couldn't fault our dining experience at Poets. We're both vegetarians and were delighted to be offered a separate veggie & vegan menu. This was so refreshing as many hotel restaurants just add a token risotto to the menu and hope that will do, which gets a bit tedious after a while.Great atmosphere, superb food from a creative menu. Staff were very friendly and helpful too. We would highly recommend dining and drinking at Poets. This is right on our doorstep so we will definitely be visiting regularly. More...
Friendly stuff, very professional, enjoy my evening. Thanks
We stayed at Ely for the weekend and booked Poets House for evening Dinner was very impressed food was lovely and different Staff was friendly and helpful
My wife and I were celebrating our Ruby Wedding Anniversary. On arrival we had cocktails in the lovely bar before being shown to our table in the gorgeous dining room. My wife doesn't eat meat so she was given the Vegetarian/Vegan menu as well as the normal A La Carte menu to choose from and the waitress was able to advise my wife on the various dishes. I ate from the A La Carte menu, as did my wife for her fish main course. Whilst the wine list is not extensive, the quality of wines to choose from was excellent. The service was unobtrusive but attentive and I can't praise that highly enough. The quality of the food was excellent with the exception of the construction of one dish. My wife's treacle glazed skate wing fillet was served on top of a mushroom fricassee. She did not eat all of the fricassee as a) there was too much of it, and b) she felt the flavour did not work well with treacle glazed fish.Overall the evening's experience was excellent. More...
Food was devine. Atmosphere was quiet and romantic. Perfect.
From the moment that you walk in the place has a feel of class. Very modern, which we weren't expecting from the name. The bar area is excellent with a nice choice of Gins! ! The dining room was nice but a lack of people made the ambience a little strange. Shame really because the food and service was excellent. With food like this you should really be filling up for a Sunday lunch. More...
We had a great meal here, the food was really exceptional - something you'd expect from a far more expensive restaurant. Wine was great, too. It was quite quiet on a friday night but did get busier as the night progressed. More...
It's great to find a hotel with a good restaurant and bar near the Cathedral. After a short tour of the cathedral and the tower, the warm welcome and atmosphere at the Poet was very much appreciated. If I have any criticism is about the set menu, It would have been better if they have a la carte as well. Perhaps because it was a Sunday! Also, for not a big eater like myself, I did find the portion quite small. More...
Nice, smart restaurant in a boutique hotel. We went on a Sunday for our wedding anniversary and had the good fortune to have the fixed price menu - 3 courses £30, but a good selection available for a fixed price menu. Food was really good, portion size just right for 3 courses. Service was very friendly and relaxed. Large, spacious bar for drinks before and after. Impressed. Would go again :) More...
Friendly, excellent service - amazing pudding - and all in beautiful surroundings. We ate in the conservatory area and felt attended but with enough space to relax and enjoy the food and company. You are our treat to ourselves. Absolutely lovely lunch. More...
Had a lovely Sunday Lunch with friends in a very relaxed, friendly environment. Will certainly be returning
Very Good food. A surprise in fact. Parking an issue as well as hotels lack of customer`s needs. During the course of my mothers 75 birthday lunch I went to reception to ask if I could park my car for 10 to 20 minutes in the drop off or disable space as car park time of 2 hours was now expiring. I was also taking my mother home who was disabled. Lady on reception simply said no. Very poor. I had to go and move my car and find another car space while my family continued their lunch. I am not complaining about having to move my car as that was my doing, but to say no to bring my car in for a few minutes as we in the middle of lunch is a poor decision. More...
the dining room was very welcoming, staff very friendly and cutlery and glassware of a high standard. The menu was very varied although on the website the sample menu had a steak option but was not available on our visit. Good value for money.
This was our first dining experience and was slightly disappointed. Service was curt and we felt as though we were there at the waitresses displeasure and not our pleasure; however the trainee waitress was very pleasant and human. Bread arrived after our starters. Starters were minimal to say the least; I know it was fine dining but all the same small. The scallops were however beautifully cooked, but the crab starter lacked flavour.3 of us had the pollack bisque - the latter being more like an unflavoured dishwater rather than a sumptuous bisque. Others had the lamb, which was again minimal in protein. In this day and age we shouldn't really have to pay extra for sides.Again puddings minimal. It was a Tuesday night and the restaurant was empty - maybe head chef was off?Lovely for a cocktail in the bar, but won't hurry back to the restaurant. More...
Dined with husband on a Wednesday evening. Beautiful, sultry, dark grey shiny decor. Very quiet night customer-wise. No background music played / conversations audible. Both servers very pleasant and efficient. Food: bread, a long wait, arrived immediately followed by starters (forgotten bread?). Food was good but not hot as had been faffed with too long to present it. Trying hard to be fine dining but not there yet. Keep trying. Too much emphasis on presenting and gimmicks rather than cooking really good food. Not disappointed overall but some work to be done to achieve quality/taste/presentation to match surroundings, which given time may be achieved if the restaurant is supported. Worst drawback is no parking and although some close by, Saturday evenings and wet days will be a major problem. Restaurant had only recently reopened I'm told. More...
Excellent service with a smile and a good experience all round.Only disappointment was that the main courses were a bit small and needed some starch to balance them out - good job we had a side order of chips.
Our wonderful dining experience began with a warm welcome and an invitation to sit in the lounge and enjoy a pre-dinner drink. My wife enjoyed the cocktail-of-the-week, a nice idea. We sat savouring our drinks and taking in the modern decor of the lounge and later were escorted to our table. Our starters were excellent, I especially enjoyed my scallops and black pudding. I normally go for steak as a main but was tempted by the lamb and was not disappointed, it was so tasty. Linda's sweet was a deconstructed Eaton Mess .... beautiful presentation as well as tasty. More...
Delicious food, great service and lovely ambiance. Equally good for romantic dinner for two as for breakfast the next day - eggs benedict were great. Highly recommend for romantic meal as much as a larger group event More...
The restaurant is very nice, good service and nice menu. However our food was poor, my fish dish was very salty and my wife's chicken was bland. Sadly breakfast next day our eggs were overdone, while the cold buffet was very nice.Dissapointed. More...
A good experience overall. Service was a little slow (for other diners rather than us, but their discomfort was noticeable) and the main course could have been served a little hotter. The Eton Mess was lovely, but whoever thought it necessary to 'deconstruct' it? Maybe this is one deconstruction too far! These points would not deter another visit. More...
The food and setting were great, and the staff pleasant, but clearly had not been trained to the standard one would expect in such a setting (and price).
Great night out to celebrste my wifes birthday and her brothers engagement.Food was great as always,, had an allergy issue woth one plate but this was chabged without question. The staff very friendlyChampagne good price and well chilled More...
This is an excellent restaurant in a lovely setting with views (from our table at least) of Ely Cathedral. The service was good and the food excellent. My only complaint would be that at the end we were presented with the bill and we placed the cash in the folder on the table and as no one came for it we proceeded to leave the restaurant. I was approached by a waitress (who had not served us) and brusquely asked (in the middle of the restaurant if I was staying at the hotel or going to the bar. I replied that we were not) As she was no doubt about to accuse me of not paying for our meal our waitress came over and intervened. No apology was given and it left a bad taste to the end of what had been an excellent dinner. I know mistakes can be made but so should apologies. I am also not sure that such a conversation should have been made in the middle of the restaurant rather than in the lobby. More...
Found the hotel and restaurant to be ideal for celebrating my wife's birthday. All the staff were welcoming and friendly and nothing was a trouble. The accommodation was great and the choice of menu very good. The food was excellent quality and nicely presented. They could however do more to promote where they source there meat and vegetables locally. This would be good marketing for both the restaurant and local businesses. More...
I booked Poets House for a family celebration (wedding anniversary and graduation) based on the reviews and was not disappointed. The lounge area is very relaxed and the staff were very helpful. More...
Had a nice dinner here in civilised surroundings. Food not exceptional: asparagus as a starter was a bit flabby, and the sirloin steak was chewy & tough, but we were asked why we had left rather a lot of the steak they apologised and gave us a choice of desserts or dessert wine for free: a nice gesture as we had not sought to complain in any way. On another day we had a bar meal in the Library bar and the burger was one of the best I have had - and good chips. Nice setting and pleasant lighting. More...
Three of us (ladies) ate here for my birthday. We had a mixture of a la carte and set menu. All was cooked superbly and the portions were larger than we expected for a fine dining establishment. We would certainly recommend. It was fairly quiet, perhaps 5 other tables in use, but that made it more private for us. Service was very attentive. More...
A perfect romantic dinner out with my partner. A very elegant and relaxing ambience, a perfect service and outstanding food (something really special that you can't find in a pub and you can't cook by yourself, just to be clear). I will remember for a long time the perfect salmon I had there! It is expensive but the overall experience deserved the money. Absolutely amazing! More...
This was my second visit for afternoon tea. Again it was lovely, the place itself is modern, relaxed and 'grown up'. I have never had any grumbles about the staff but this time they were fantastic, very attentive and nothing was too much for them
Very attentive staff from beginning to end. All food looked pleasing to the eye and most tasted good too except for the vegetarian main, most restaurants seem to make all food look pretty until the vegetarian main and the Poets House was no exception. Large portion of nothing much, quite disappointed even though staff were aware of a vegetarian being in our party, maybe bad choice or just unlucky. The other 3 in our party enjoyed the fish main and beef main, present well and tasty. Would go again but not for the vegetarian menu! Overall we would say a little pricey but for a special occasion not too bad. Overall 8/10 More...

The food, service and hotel were lovely. However, the hotel is used for coffee meetings by groups of mums and babies which I have nothing against but didn't expect in this surrounding.
Last Friday we had yet another great meal here. The ambience is great, nice bar area and helpful staff. The menu has an ok choice and the food is always cooked well. The only point I would make is that there is no parking at the restaurant for diners, but there is plenty of on street parking in the close area. More...
We had a lovely anniversary dinner recently. The maitre d' greeted us at the door then ushered us to the bar / sun room for a pleasant start. We ordered a drink and then the menu was bought forth, for a leisurely choice and unhurried move to the lovely dining area. One of two stately rooms, it had enough space for tables to afford privacy without isolation. Waiters & waitresses were always at hand, kind, efficient and unobtrusive. Complementary amuse-bouche starter and chocolate finisher were an extra touch. The wine was excellent, and the dishes well proportioned with a hint of Master Chef presentation. No surprises on the entrees... indeed they exceeded expectations! Perhaps on the lighter side of nouvelle-cuisine, we felt we needed all three courses, but that is hardly a complaint. All in all great experience, I cannot wait to return for brunch or with family & friends. Location is perfect, a short drive north of Cambridge with the public parking a pleasant stroll away past the cathedral. Add great value for the money, what else could one ask for indeed? More...
The entire experience was excellent from Arrington and being seated for pre-dinner drinks, the attentivness of the staff and the ambience. We were are looking forward to fine ddining and that is what we experienced. The touch that I enjoyed was that the red wine was served ' el chambre ' as it should be but this attention to detail is often overlooked. My young adult children were treated as adults and this also means that I will be very happyHeineken with you again and recommend the experience. More...
Superb amuse-gueule, pigeon starter and cheese, then dessert. All Michelin quality. Main was ok but frankly rustic compared with the other courses. Steak can be "dressed up" by presenting it on a crouton, maybe some chicken liver pate and/or foie gras, with suitably crafted veg. Give it a go, guys, you're more than capable. Service was virtually flawless, very very good, keep it up. More...
Warm reception. Attentive staff. Good ambience. The menu was good and the food even better. Good wine list. Having dined in many parts of the world Poets must rank amongst the best. We have dined at Poets previously and the level of service remains very high - well doneIt is the little things that matter and Poets covers them all - for example my wife casually mentioned that it was our wedding anniversary so when desert arrived "Happy Anniversary" was written in chocolate around the edge of the plate More...
We have only eaten two evening meals here, however both have been truly excellent, as we are "foodies", I do not make this claim lightly. Service from the moment you walk through the door until the moment you leave is extremely attentive without being intrusive. Gluten Free diets are easily catered for. I would add a word of caution, and this is purely from my experience, I have also eaten two lunches here and although they were okay they were sadly not a patch on the evening meals for some reason, the service however was still excellent. More...
The food was fantastic the server was fantastic quick knowable funny. We were made to feel as we were the only ones there if u have the a la carte menu there is a dress code no jeans or trainers, smart dress only as when we were there a couple was asked to leave
Beautiful place and the service you could not fault at all!!The food was amazing, we went for my boyfriends birthday and will recommend it to anyone.
A truly beautiful restaurant to visit - wonderful atmosphere and very attentive staff - food was amazing although a little expensive so best to leave for a special occasion (average 2 course meal with a bottle of wine was £100). I'll be going again!
The food was overall good but the meat lacked flavour. I had very tender lamb which I suspect was souvide but lacked any lamb taste (often souvide is all about texture rather than taste) and my husband's steak was cut too thin and un-inspiring. However my balsamic parfait was delicious !!Ambience was a little off as I think there was a dispute going on between two female staff and I could feel the tension but they were attentive, quick and said all the right things. We stayed the night in the excellent accommodation and breakfast was excellent More...
What a lovely place to eat! The service was excellent from start to finish, very attentive, there was no rush to take our order. The food was so delicious, good size portions too. The pre starter was a nice touch too. We also had a lovely bottle of red wine. We didn't have room for desert. The food and wine isn't cheap as you wouldn't expect it to be in a place like this, but it isn't over priced, you pay for quality and you get quality. Will definitely visit this place again, maybe afternoon tea next time! More...
Lovely ambience/décor, good food and very helpful pleasant staff
Amazing food, service. Incredible attention to detail that makes it feel very special.
We booked dinner at the Poets House on Aug 21st. We had been there before and we loved it; however, reviews from earlier this year were a bit hit and miss. Nevertheless, if our previous experience was anything to go by, it was certainly worth a treat. The food was delicious, both starters (mackerel) and main course (roasted pork loin), completely faultless. The starters took a bit longer than expected, but we were told that the chef wasn't happy with the first attempt and had started again. These were taken out of our bill (we did not ask for it). And the dessert (creme brulee) was absolutely wonderful.Yes, slightly pricier than a pub meal, but a whole different experience. And a lot more affordable than you may think too! More...
The hotel is comprised of three grand terrace houses which have been converted very nicely into a modern tasteful hotel perfectly situated in Ely, being opposite Cromwell's House (well worth a visit) and very close to Ely Cathedral (ditto). The room was large and superbly appointed , with a decidedly clean, new feel about it.We had the brilliant afternoon tea and the evening meal from the table d'hote menu. The service was excellent with a young friendly and keen staff. We slept very soundly in our air-conditioned room .The breakfast was excellent. All in all , we recommend the Poets House as excellent Value for Money for a quality hotel and restaurant. More...
Great service that brought a smile to my face. We were well attended by waiting staff who were all very professional and couldn't do enough to help. Complimentary aperitif was a nice touch. The food and wine was good quality and well presented. All in all an enjoyable evening, in pleasant surroundings, without being rushed out the door. More...
Excellent food and service. We will definitely dine there again.
We came here for our 10th anniversary as it looked so special. I can not fault the food. I had duck parfait to start which was amazing and my husband has mushroom soup. For main I had the lamb which was cooked to perfection. Wish there was more! My husband had the steak and mentioned that the chips were delicious. To finish it off we had chocolate brownie with ice cream. This was define but would have preferred it to be warm. The restaurant itself was lovely and very romantic and our waiter was brilliant and very helpful More...
I visited the Poet House with a friend in July and couldn't get a table to eat so thought id give this a try, even though it was the wettest day of the summer & Ely train station was flooded we eventually arrived 15 minutes late & was greeted pleasantly by the lady on the desk. The waiter who showed us to the table seemed a bit grumpy & we had to ask if we could take our champagne to the bar whilst choosing our menu - from then on the service was brilliant - so attentive & really friendly. Best fillet steak i have ever had it melted in my mouth. Will be going again soon & taking different friends. More...
Excellent food and service. Will definitely be back.
Nicely situated with views of the cathedral, The Poet's House is a good choice for dining when in Ely. Food and service were very good, especially the chicken. We felt the standard of cooking was much improved from the last visit with nicely presented dishes and a good balance of vegetables. More...
Exceptionally good food, lovingly presented by charming and attentive waiting staff who are very easy on the eye! Ample helpings apart from the starter. The scallops & belly pork were perfectly cooked and the smoked trout mousse with beetroot three ways was the tastiest I have experienced in ages. Meltingly wonderful roast sirloin of beef was served rare as requested and of the many accompaniments, the creamed leek stood out. Home made ice cream and sorbet verged on the historic. Outstandingly good value. My only gripe is that the breads were deeply disappointing. The onion foccacia was dry (from the night before?) and the fruit bread oddly out of place. More...
Booked this as a meal for a friends birthday. We were greeted at the door. We were also given a free glass of prosecco each much to our surprise. The food didn't look like there would be enough to satisfy but we came out full.Parking was an issue and it is a shame there is no on site parking. My guest has a dodgy hip but doesn't qualify for a disabled badge. Parking was quite some distance from the restaurant. More...
The ambiance was very nice, the food was delicious but the pace was very, very slow. We gave up on dessert since it was nearly 11 pm and others in my party had a train to catch.
My wife and I had one of the best eating experiences here, the service was that of a top London restaurant, the staff looked after us like we were the only people there, even though it was full. Was expecting the staff to hover over you but they didnt. The food was very different and extremely good, as was the wine. I'd highly recommend the Poets House as it is a feast for the senses. I took my son to The Poet's House during the Easter break. I have driven past the venue many times and never really paid much attention until someone recommended it to me. The things that stand out are the superb service, lovely surroundings and excellent food. It isn't cheap, but is good value if you want somewhere special to go. More...
Joined friends here in an easy to miss inn in Ely. The setting and environment could have set us up for a let down on the service and food. However, this place has its act together and nothing was a miss. Actually, a great meal, wonderful service, and a commitment to return. Thank you for a lovely afternoon. More...
What a lovely experience, I haven't had such a good first impression of a place for a long time! No real competition in the immediate area for this calibre of food / dining, well worth the price tag and venturing out of Cambridge for.
Lovely setting, very well decorated with a good attentive service although we thought that the staff could have been a little friendlier. The menu was excellent with a good choice and generally the food was good, however it was consistently under seasoned. This isn't normally something I would comment on but every dish we had (5 starters and mains) seemed to completely lack seasoning at all, to the point where it tasted very bland. We had a very critical chef eating with us who commented that it was a real shame, as they use good quality produce, it was well cooked and it could have been excellent! That said we would probably return and hope that this was just a one off! More...
The ambience was lovely, friendly and calm. We were greeted by the maître de and shown to our table.I had booked at least 3 weeks before and explained I required a gluten free menu. I had to ask for bread, and what was safe to eat from the menu, however the waiter did persuade the chef to make me a delicious dessert. It just wasn't a sleek performance from the service staff. We were given 3 large menus to look at, the staff were not discreet. I feel that the Poets House needs to decide what market are they appealing to. It tried too hard to be of ' Michelin star' service, but failed and so then spoilt what was a near perfect evening. I know this is being picky, but the service took the shine off. More...
Top class service married with excellently prepared and presented food and drink
If you are looking for an upmarket place to have dinner this is the place. The food was excellent, the service was excellent and the dining room itself decorated tastefully. Tables are far enough apart to give privacy without feeling isolated. Despite the high class of service and food a meal for two only cost us £85 and this was 3 courses and drinks. There is a rather good house menu with some nice dishes but the a LA carte menu had some fantastic dishes and I would recommend the lime cured mackerel as being particularly tasty. More...
Our first visit and it certainly met our expectations. Overall a fantastic evening for us and will definitely be booking again as soon as we have a reason to celebrate (or the spare funds to allow it!)First of many? Yes.
We booked and went for Sunday lunch as a treat it didn't disappoint. The food was very good. The service and atmosphere were fantastic. Well worth the cost. We will be back again as this is not our first visit. More...
Lovely setting in Ely, opposite the cathedral & Oliver Cromwell's House, this hotel & restaurant exceeded expectations for our romantic anniversary weekend away. The staff are all extremely smart, polite & helpful, & nothing is too much trouble. The ambience in the Conservatory is exemplary, with a mix of comfy armchairs from which to enjoy your drinks or afternoon tea. The restaurant allows intimacy without any loss of privacy as tables are comfortably spaced, & the standard of food is superb. Overall - faultless! More...
As a lady travelling on my own for business purposes and therefore on a table by myself I found that the Restaurant staff put me at my ease and were very attentive. The staff recommended some of the food and the particular glass of wine all of which was excellent - I would recommend the dining room to any resident of the hotel as the ambience was welcoming and the staff were excellent. Modern decor in a new hotel. Mix of soft seating in bar and mood lighting gave a great atmosphere for evening drinks. A tasty cocktail menu. Bar and restaurant staff were friendly, attentive and professional. A number of menu choices, fixed price to A La Carte, but all with interesting dishes, including vegetarian. Home-made breads tasted good (milk loaf and fennel seed) and plenty of regional food content. A la carte designed dishes followed, all enjoyable. Particular mention to wonderful cobnut risotto and hazlenut parfait. Staff were everything they should be, helpful, discreet and genuine. We visited mid-week, so not busy but we were made to feel special with no 'slow-night apathy'Poet's House is a must-visit for dinner/drinks More...
This is a modern hotel and the Dining Room is a lovely restaurant. The decor is unique and attractive. The staff are friendly, efficient and polite. The food is excellent! Fine dining. Courses are well thought out and expertly prepared. It is very good value for the quality. Some of us had the set menu and that was cheap as chips for what we received. Will definitely be back here!! Excellent food, service from the staff was excellent and special atmosphere
Really good service & food was excellent. However, only dissapointment was the service at the end of the meal. It took us ages to get the bill because the staff dissapeared near the end of the meal or were too busy talking to another customer on the other side of the restuarant to notice us. Other than that, food was very nice and would have been an excellent review if staff had continued to show the attentive excellent service they did throughout the meal and welcome to the restuarant. Friendly staff, great location, lovely building and nice ambience, without being overly pretentious. Somewhere to go for a great meal for any occasion. Very impressive given how recently they opened. Plan to try an overnight stay in the future More...
Not much else to say really. My husband and I had an evening meal and the whole experience was Superb from start to finish. We will definitely return.
We enjoyed our Sunday lunch, the portions were better than expected , I personally would like to see a choice of ales,
We booked for a pre-christmas get together with my sister. and her husbandThe service could not be faulted. The Waiter's were attentive at all times. Our only fault was the Drinks were a tad expensive, and only offered bottled water at the table. All in all tho would recommend. More...
Service attentive, food excellent, ambience conducive to a relaxing meal.
Delicious Sunday lunch with generous portions in a beautifully appointed room. Good value for money, great service and a special treat.
We, as a family, are all quite foody, We were at Ely for a reason where food wasn't part of it but happened upon your restaurant the night before going by looking up dining places on the internet. We were very glad we did as the dining experience was very positive. The staff are very professional and helpful. More...
We have eaten here afew times and it just gets better. Super food, fantastic service with staff that are friendly and efficient at what they do. Yann welcomes us in, remembering our names is a lovely touch. If you haven't been yet, give this place a try you will not regret it. Enjoy! More...
Great meal for a birthday celebration. Service outstanding
It was a mid-week lunch celebration for my birthday. I don't know if it was the quiet that allowed for the extra attention that was lavished on us by the butler but our every whim was met. The food was superb and the decoration of the dinning room was lavish, without being pretentious, which made for a special yet relaxed dining experience. It was also my first encounter with the idea of a 'pre-dessert' which I wholeheartedly embrace. The actual dessert was divine, I had the ‘Valhrona chocolate fondant with blood orange and a hazelnut ice-cream’ one of their signature dishes and rightly so. Sinfully good! More...
very attentive staff, lovely tableware and yummy home made rolls to start. Portions not massive but quite filling. We ate pre concert and so the room was very quiet even on a Saturday night so not much atmosphere. We did not agree on the décor as I thought the grey walls rather depressing but my husband liked them. Would go again for a later dinner to get a better idea of the menu as had the limited set menu. More...
We visited The Poet`s House for my parents` Ruby Wedding Anniversary and had a fantastic time. The food was excellent, we had three courses, including coffee, and received complimentary bread rolls and Petit fours with our coffee. The restaurant was very stylishly presented and the service was very attentive. The bill was more than we would normal hope (£35 a head) but well worth it for a special occasion. More...
The quality and value of what's offered is unsurpassed anywhere else in Ely - this venue goes from strength to strength
Excellent food, great service. Highly recommended for that special treat!
Very polite and helpful staff. Not rushed at any point. Great that you could mix and match from the different menus on the same table. The set menu was simple and good value although we didn't opt for that in the end as we had a celebration. Food was well prepared and looked delicious and flavours were wonderful. Will go again when next in Ely. More...
The ambience of the Dining room is outstanding, very good service and the food was good although not special. Overall reasonable value for money. Will certainly try again.
Outstanding surroundings, superb food, excellent service. Met or exceeded expectations on every count, could not recommend too highly. Will definitely be coming back for more. More...
We spent the night at The poets house for our 1st wedding anniversary and our whole stay was 5 star. Food and service was top nptch.
I've been to Poet's House three times now, and while the first two experiences were flawless, the third was a bit lacking. The starters arrived in time and were lovely, but then the waitress forgot to send our next course to the kitchen, only realising about 40 minutes later. Then my husband's lamb arrived far too rare for his tastes, presumably because they'd rushed it. However, they did give us each a complimentary glass of wine to apologise for their mistakes. I also thought my baked yoghurt pudding was utterly uninspired compared to desserts I've had there previously. However, on average Poet's House is a great restaurant for a special occasion - I just think that to charge the prices it does it needs to be perfect every time. More...
A lovely Restaurant with very friendly staff. Highly recommended.
We visited for a birthday lunch as a family. The food was superb and the service was excellent. I have a 17 month old son and they were very accommodating. The children's menu had a good choice of food and the waiting staff were very attentive. More...

Absolutely fabulous meal. Staff were all very welcoming and efficient! Will be back!!
This restaurant has been beautifully renovated with many dining areas, so it's is suitable for couples or groups. The staff are charming and helpful and the food is well presented and extremely tasty. Table de hote is excellent value, and the a la carte menu is varied, and not over priced. There is also an excellent vegetarian menu. The bar area is large and comfortable and you can enjoy pre dinner drinks or cocktails, or post dinner coffee. A must visit and we will definitely be returning. More...
I went with my husband for an anniversary meal and we had a wonderful time. The staff were amazing, very friendly and professional. I am not used to going to fancy places, but I felt very comfortable and looked after, as though they cared if I had a good time. The food was very good, my pudding was superb. We ate off the house menu (3 courses for £25) and we loved the fresh bread that arrived whilst we looked at the menu. Highly reccommended. More...
Although still relatively new, the place runs smoothly and delivers a varied and interesting menu very well. The wine list is reasonably varied and the cocktails are traditional but nicely done. It almost seems out of place in Ely. More...
There has been a vacancy in Ely for a top quality restaurant for some time, and the Poets House has filled the gap. I was very impressed by the spacious bar area which would be great for spending time and chatting to friends. The wine list is exceptional. I was especially impressed with the Indian wine. The service was faultless. Excellent, original and extensive vegetarian menu. Not cheap, but good value taking into account the standard of the food, service and ambience. More...
We had an evening meal, which is why I couldn't tick the other meals. The staff were attentive, but not intrusive and always smiling. As for the food, it was excellent. The chef is very skilful and inventive. I am a decent cook, so when I go to a restaurant I like to eat something I couldn't prepare myself at home and I couldn't have prepared the meal we had at Poets House. The dishes were traditional, but surprising and beautifully presented, They were light and utterly delicious. You can trust the waiter's wine recommendation. The meal was reasonably priced for its high quality. More...
Looking for attention to detail and 1st class service within a beautiful setting then this is for you. Food was of highest quality and the presentation was an art form. This restaurant has the wow factor! More...
all the staff very welcoming and efficient, the dinning room is very different and special and we got an intimate table for our party of 6, the wines are very different, the cocktails helped to make our evening a special night
The food was excellent and the service faultless. The portions are not overlarge and a side dish, "a bit on the side", is necessary to fill it out. We ordered a large glass of wine each and a bottle of water; when the bill arrived the charge was £9.50 per glass and £4.75 for the bottle. I feel this to be slightly excessive and more than we have experienced elsewhere. More...
The food service was excellent, though steak was incorrectly cooked (pink in the middle when ordered well done) when I mentioned it, it was rectified immediately. I was a bit displeased when I arrived early with the intention of having a drink, and was standing at the bar waiting where nearby a woman in black appeared to be training a staff member, didn't make eye contact, serve me or fetch the bar tender. The bar tender appeared to be elsewhere in the hotel, and when she finally came in she served me in a friendly manner. As it was 11.45ish I wasn't even sure if the bar was open yet as I stood there waiting, but there was no sign. More...
We booked for the Poets House to celebrate a special occasion - and we were not disappointed. Amazing food and good service. We will definitely go back .....
My husband and I choose to have lunch at the Poets House on a rare outing together without the children. It was an extremely hot day and the Dining Room was a cool and serene oasis. We decided not to go with the excellent value set menu - on that particularly hot day, the options weren't quite light enough. The food really was superb, extremely well presented and cooked to perfection. My rhubarb and custard dessert was the highlight - vanilla cream, rhubarb ice, poached rhubarb and lovely buttery crumble nuggets. The service was very good and the bill was fair. Overall a lovely treat which we're looking forward to repeating soon! More...
The staff were friendly, confident and gave a very good service. The decor is a good balance of period features with a contemporary renovation and styling. The food was of a high standard and well priced.Overall we had a very enjoyable evening and were impressed with our first Poets House experience. More...
I have been twice to The Poets House, once for a birthday lunch and once for dinner with friends. On both occasions it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The only downside was that at lunchtime we had difficulty parking as there is no car park at the restaurant. I have recommended the Poets House to many of our friends and our daughter and son in law who live in Ely have made a booking. More...
Excellent reception, made us feel very welcome and kind of special! Lovely surroundings both inside and out together with beautiful views of the Cathedral, Oliver Cromwells House and St Mary's Church. Food was very much to our likely, excellent quality and variety.Service was acceptable, but could do with some improvements. We needed to 'catch an eye' whenever we wanted something which at times was very difficult.Overall a very enjoyable evening. More...

I found the plates rather unusual. I think that some people specially the elderly would find it difficult to cut the food due to the sides being concave and the base rather small. They would be better used as fruit bowls. Cutlery is rather awkward to handle. I also think that when placing the sugar cubes on the table small tongs should be available. On the whole the food was very good. A good combination of flavours. More...
