I am a creative, quick copywriter and public relations professional whose work gets results.
In the past ten years as a writer-for-hire, I have worked with local and regional businesses, charities, writers and public sector organisations to secure them maximum audience interest and media coverage. If you need a website rewritten, a clever brand name, a smashing press release or a brochure that people can't put down, I'm your wordsmith.
My recent clients include Colchester Castle, Chelmsford City Council and White Dragon Archery, alongside two regional charities dealing with homelessness, youth activities and environmental issues. Although I am particularly experienced in copywriting for the heritage, not-for-profit, wedding, leisure, environmental and venue hire sectors, my writing style is extremely adaptable and I pick up new ideas quickly - so if you're working on something a bit off-the-wall, feel free to get in touch!
With several years' full-time experience managing corporate communications for high-profile organisations, I'm also highly experienced in dealing with the sensitive issues that every company faces from time to time. If you need to break a difficult story, deal with a communications crisis or send out a carefully-worded email to your customers, I have the tact, discretion and dexterity with language that you need for everything to run smoothly. Bardwell Words Q&A
What do you love most about your job?
Like every writer, I love the magic of words.
When I work on a piece - whether it's a press release or a full website - I put time and effort into really understanding the company, the needs and fears of its customers, the services or products it provides, and how it links into the world around it. I ask the right questions to work out exactly what each individual client and their target audience needs from me.
When you understand the emotional side of a topic - what it means to people, why they need this, how it affects them - you can write something which perfectly appeals to its intended audience and gets the right attention.
I know when a piece is finished because the writing starts to 'glow' - it creates a feeling in the reader. My favourite part of my job is once all the hard work is complete, when I send a glowing text back to my client and hear that they're delighted with it - and that it's getting great results!
What inspired you to start your own business?
As well as being a rather good writer, I'm a very curious person and I get interested in lots of things! Freelancing enables me to research and write about so many subjects.
In my previous projects I've found myself digging into all sorts of topics, from the history of the Essex canals to the best ways to invest a small inheritance, from archery techniques to wedding favours, from the nuanced landscape of homelessness in the UK to the incredible variety of small festivals springing up across Europe. Every day is different and interesting - and all this research means I'm becoming a dab hand at Trivial Pursuit!
Why should our clients choose you?
I'm conscientious, quick, enthusiastic and creative. Work with me and you'll get projects delivered on time with perfect spelling, grammar and tone. I'll put in the research and effort to imagine myself in your audience's shoes and write something that's perfectly angled to get your message across to them.
With extensive experience in press liaison and public relations, I understand what appeals to a journalist and what questions the media might ask. You'll get the benefit of my expertise and skill, whether you're launching an exciting new product or making a tough announcement - and I'm always happy to give you a call to provide a bit of extra advice or talk through a more complex piece of work.
