What’s the secret to keeping a party dancing all night long?

By taking requests.
Reading the crowd.
Good use of the microphone depending on the clients preference on microphone usage.
Talking to the guests prior to the start if possible to gain their trust and so that they feel comfortable approaching the DJ.
I strongly believe in giving the client what they want. I have seen too many DJ's play their own favourite music thinking that everyone else will like it too.

How would you describe your ‘style’?

I don't really have a style as I try to adapt because every event is different. However, I believe that a good sense of humour is important.

What do you love most about your job?

Getting paid for enjoying myself. Yes I really do love my job !
Job satisfaction. I like to see the pleasure I give to everyone doing my job.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I didn't really want to just own a business, it had to be a wedding DJ or nothing. It has just grown over the years and we are now one of the largest and best DJ services covering the south of England.

Why should our clients choose you?

With over 27 years experience as a business, we have never cancelled on a client or received any complaints, EVER !
I challenge any DJ in the country to match my music knowledge. (Now there's a statement)
I am a full time DJ, registered and professional.
I'm hoping to find the time to write a book this year to educate the client and to include what to look for when booking entertainment and the level of service that they should expect to receive.

Why should potential clients choose to book Retro DJ?

There are a lot of very good DJ's out there but then there are also a lot of bad DJ's that give the professionals a bad name. When a client has a bad experience it has a roll over effect on all DJ's professional or not. Let's face it, anyone can go out and buy a cheap mixer, speakers and advertise themselves as professional.

We are always updating our sound and lighting equipment
We have back up DJ's should anyone fall sick on the day
We carry back up equipment should anything fail on the day
We don't hold another job during the week, we are just professional DJ's

What is a professional?
A professional is someone who has a lot of experience and training such as a tradesman who only does what they do as a profession.
Would you go to a doctor or solicitor who only did this as his or her second job?
A professional DJ is someone who only does this as a living. They could be an experienced DJ but a lot of DJ's still claim to be professional even though they just DJ in their spare time or as a hobby ! However, an experienced DJ may be all that you need for your event especially if you are just having a knees up at your local bar but if you have a really important event such as your wedding day, then we would recommend using a professional. It all depends on how special your party is to you.

Message to clients:

Do your homework !
Does your DJ have a good reputation?
Don't just look at a website and believe the testiomonials. A good website does not mean a good DJ although it does show that they have made some effort.
Ask them if they can back up their testimonials. Speak to the venues where they have worked as the venues have no reason to lie.
Don't just go for the cheapest. If they are cheap, there is uaually a reason for that.

How much should I pay for a DJ ?

This is often the very first question that is asked. It all depends on what you are looking for really.

Imagine that you wanted to treat someone special to a meal ! You could pay for a takeaway meal or you could really try to impress them by taking them to a good restaurant or you can even go michelin star. Either way you are still getting a meal but the prices are very different.

I could go on forever which is why I would like to find the time to write a book. Please note that It is not my intention to knock other DJ's as I have already mentioned that there are a lot of good DJ's out there but there are also a lot of bad ones. I have simply just tried to put everything into perspective.

It normally takes around 30-40 minutes for a DJ to set up their equipment but this could change depending on the specific DJ, venue, and event.

Most DJs will offer lighting hire either as an add-on or as part of their general service. Although it really depends on the DJ and the packages they offer. For example, a DJ may include floor lighting as a standard part of the service but then charge extra for more advanced lighting equipment including bar lights and moving headlights.

Most DJs will curate a playlist based on your requests and provide it to you in advance of the event, just to make sure that you’re happy with it and to make tweaks if necessary. How much freedom you give to your DJ in terms of creating the music list is essentially down to you. Some customers prefer to request almost every artist/track on the playlist, whereas others are happy for the DJ to take the reigns and come up with the tracks themselves.
