Emily visited our site and in a short amount of time noticed multiple errors and gave in-depth explanations to her findings. Making it very easy for myself with no knowledge of these matters to understand. A decade long dispute was resolved in a matter of days. After Emilys site visit we handed over plans and details to Emily and Andrew who thoroughly reviewed all the data and created a very well written report which included details of regulations, law and even how to resolve the issue. How can someone tell if their loft is suitable for conversion?
A loft conversion is one idea that may seem simple and straight forward. However there is much to consider and one that I can't answer fully here as each conversion is unique. A good loft conversion can really add value to your property. But a poor loft conversion can be off putting. However, these are the things I look at:
1 - Height. How much standing room will there be once insulation and floor levels are considered.
2 - Eaves. How will these affect standing room inside, does it mean you have to walk around an object bent over so you don't bang your head. Will it make the room(s) small and impracticable. Where will the stairs go? how will this affect the floor below?
Points one and two can be overcome through Dorma's, gables or raising roof heights. But you might need planning permission.
3 - Kerb Appeal. If you stand outside what would your home look like? Would it look nice and proportionate or would it look uneven and strange. These things can really affect your home in terms of value and desirability. This is where good design comes in, as it brings the loft conversion and home together making it cohesive and useable.
4 - Value - Will the cost of the conversion add the right amount of value to your property.
These are general pointers and professionals in this field would need to see the property to understand the project in full.
Run us through the different stages in the loft conversion process - what’s involved?
The scope and scale of the loft conversion being considered will affect the whole process and there is no one clear answer. If the loft conversion required planning permission then the process could be: Survey, Sketch design, Planning drawings, Construction drawings and Specification, tender and Site administration. Within this you might need specialists reports from Ecologists and Structural engineers. These reports become incorporated with the planning process or Construction drawings that might need to reviewed by building control to ensure it all meets Building Regulations. A good architecture firm or loft conversion specialist would be able to offer advice.

At Studio Tor we specialise in lasted buildings and conservations areas. We have a specialist conservation expert in our team who can fully understand the heritage of your property. By understanding the history of your building we are then able to develop your project to meet your needs and preserve your buildings character. We will also complete a specialist Heritage Statement to the standards of Historic England's Conservation Principles and Guidance.
