Have been working with Spencer twice a week for 5 weeks now. I am not a gym person and hadn't worked with a PT before, so was quite daunting before I started. Spencer has been a great addition to my weekly regime. I run a lot but lacked precision in strength training and nutrition for the miles ( and working patterns) so was looking for a local guide to do just that. Spence has been so motivating and understanding! I suffer from Axial Spondylitis so I wanted to improve my core strength and loose weight to help work around my condition. Spence modified exercises on the fly so I could still work on the muscle groups during those sessions, avoiding triggering any pain. Dodgy knee? No problem! Bad back? No problem! All you need to do is turn up and he will work through it with you! Taking part in the nutrition plan, I have learnt so much from the advice given, I was able to maintain calorie deficit and have enough energy to maintain the fitness plan, without breaking the bank. I reached out to Spence looking for support for an initial three months support to lose some weight, put some focus back on my diet and help with a strategy for getting active in the right way. From the outset, Spence was really clear with how I would achieve my weight loss goals, what would be sensible, realistic and sustainable. I really appreciated the emphasis he put on making sure my behaviours outside of our sessions would be what defined if this 3-month burst would be successful. The extra accountability of knowing we would discuss my diet at each session, the suggestions he made to improve macro intake and also simply having his visibility of my calorie intake were key parts of making this a success. Spence takes time to get the basics right. That is in explaining key elements of food nutrition, changes that need to be made but also in every single exercise that we have done. He plans engaging bespoke sessions, takes the time to work on the little things (such as the small movements of kettlebell swings!) and explains how consistent behaviours build up to long term results. I've found all of the 20+ sessions to be engaging, testing and educational - he sets his clients up for long term success. Although we agreed a reduced calorie intake, the tips Spence gave on making sure I felt full and energised have made a big difference versus other 'quick fix' diets I have done in the past. I have rarely felt like I am restricted on the volume I can eat - focusing more on the nutrition of what makes up each meal. And the proof is in the results. We set a target of getting (and keeping) off 14 pounds of weight - which three months to the day I have achieved! I have taken inches off my waist and chest - and most importantly feel the room in my clothes and confidence in the mirror. I would work with Spence again in a heartbeat - and I will when I next need a boost on my healthcare journey; because I know that regardless of where I am at, he will tailor his expertise to my needs in an enjoyable, sustainable and safe way. I've had many personal trainers over the years and by far Spence has given me the best results by his unique mixture of absolute professionalism, personability and experience combined with incredible insight into your own limitations. I've a disability with my shoulder which has hampered my own fitness regimes but he has routinely made it a non issue and worked around it. I am in better shape after a matter of weeks with him than I have been in years. I went from couch shaped to in shape in dizzying fast speed. He is brilliant in pushing you, never too far, but in all the right ways. He makes the important issues of healthy fitness to you abundantly clear, and helps you pragmatically achieve your goals. He masters friendliness with professionalism to drive you in a way I've not had before between the trainers I have engaged with. I saw Spencer as I wanted to achieved goals in terms of strength and weight loss. My strength goals were to increase my pull ups from 7 to 15 repetitions and to increase my deadlift. My weight loss goals was to lose 5kgs. Thanks to Spencer’s advice and expertise both of these goals were achieved. The added challenge for Spencer was that I lost a leg in an accident; however, he was able to adapt exercises according to my specific needs. The home workout plans were varied and interesting. Unlike when training on my own or following a generic plan I found the exercises challenging and enjoyable. I am a physiotherapist and spend a lot of time discussing exercise and I learnt a great deal from Spencer about exercise technique, repetition and dosage. I turned up not knowing the difference between a bar bell and a dumb bell and now I can put together my own strength training and HIIT workouts. In the consultation process goals are discussed and agreed upon. Lifestyle factors, nutrition and exercise are critiqued to ensure the best way to achieve those goals using bespoke exercise prescription.
No two bodies are alike but practicing a combination of strength training and interval training to varying degrees will address most peoples goals.
