I hadn't used my voice for quite a few years, having had problems with my vocal cords - I was nervous about trying to sing. The best yet. I wonder what kind of a messy my life would have been, had it not for the power of music. I like to listen to calming and empowering messages from music, but I love to sing and share messages of hope to others. For years, my soul yearned to be able to sing but with very little success. However, since I met Selena and started some vocal and musical lessons, my perception on music and singing has been transformed to a higher level, my confidence and knowledge of music has grown from strength to strength and I'm so amazed of how powerful one can become once met with the right teacher (vocal coach). I was really apprehensive about starting singing lessons even though it has been something I’ve wanted to do for years. Selena made me feel instantly comfortable and had a really good understanding of my anxieties around singing. Being in my mid-seventies and wishing to attempt to sing for the first time since junior school I was very apprehensive on where or how to find out if it was possible. I had 6 months to achieve my target of singing a special song to my daughter at her wedding. Having searched online several times I kept going back to the Sing with Style web site as I was impressed with the variation and option of an introductory course at a reasonable cost. I nervously made the call and having explained what my target was I made my first appointment with Selena. I had no idea what to expect but was soon put at ease by Selena as she explained what we would be going through in the next hour and then we would make a decision on what was the best way to progress. During that session I was surprised how much variation of movement, stature, vocal and body exercises can make a difference to the pitch and reach of your voice. It became obvious to us both after that first hour that I was going to need more tuition. Selena was very clear in explaining what I would have to practice on and showed me various vocal and physical exercises that I would have to do if I wanted to progress. Having carried out six further lessons we came to an understanding that although I had gained in confidence and there was some improvement, I was not going to be proficient at singing. Having Selena's support, we decided the way to progress was to just concentrate on the song I wanted to sing at my daughter’s wedding. By now I knew that ‘singing’ was not in my nature but as long as I could make a decent effort then it was worth continuing with Selena’s help and encouragement. After a short break we continued for a further four meetings during which time Selena prepared me to sing the song I had selected. I also listened and practiced the song every day and on our final session we recorded my version so that it could be played as I danced with my daughter at her wedding. I have a great amount of appreciation for Selena and would not hesitate in recommending her as a tutor. She has extreme musical knowledge, is sympathetic, with lots of patience and a pleasure to be with. I did the online course with Selena, which was an excellent and educational experience. I work as an actor. - At first, I didn’t think it would truly benefit me doing it online, but because the sessions were recorded, I was able to watch them repeatedly. (Especially if something was not clear.) Understanding the mechanics of the voice is key and I was able to discipline myself with voice exercises that were set for my requirements. The lessons have benefited my acting voice as well as my singing. In my opinion on par with RSC workshops and other voice coaches I've worked with when creating a mellifluous, projecting sound. I had a 10 week crash course in singing with Selena, in preparation for singing a song at my daughter's wedding! Review of Selena Mara Singing Course I recently attended Selena Mara’s 12 week Masterful Singing course. I found it to be an excellent learning experience. I can honestly say that although my singing is still a work in progress it is probably twice as good as when I began the course. Selena is kind, patient and very knowledgeable. I decided upon singing lessons with Selena because I had lost confidence in my ability to sing, even though I have sung all of my life. Selena gave me the tools to develop a whole body approach to singing which incorporated techniques to relax, understand breath, resonance and controlling pitch. I took part in ’10 Weeks To A Vibrant Voice’, Selena’s group singing course in Totnes a few years ago. I was a very inexperienced and unconfident singer yet felt I wanted to learn to sing. I looked for a singing teacher and Selena’s course seemed to be offering all I was looking for. The classes were great fun and I felt supported and encouraged by Selena, and the other participants, but never felt too individually conspicuous, which would have put me off at that stage of my singing journey. I really enjoyed the session that Selena provided, she made it safe and fun alongside being professional. The exercises allowed provision to experiment in a non judgmental environment. The exercises were fun and I was amazed at how much I could extend the vocal range. I hadn't considered the importance of posture, shape of the mouth, use of tongue, plus other insights. Always wanted to sing and never thought I would, certainly not within a group of complete strangers but Selena made us all feel so at ease. I went on to have a private singing lesson with Selena and she made me feel comfortable enough to sing solo in front of herself, a professional. I really want to bring singing into my life for many reasons and Selena has given me the confidence to do so. Empathic and a powerhouse of knowledge! I experienced warm, fuzzy feelings after each practice. Selena’s pleasant aura makes it easy to open up and feel comfortale instantly. I also learned SO much within each session. It’s unbelievable. With a year of experience and a lot of theory floating in my head, I was able to drill her with all I knew.
