About

sakinatutoring.com

Hi!
My name is Sakina and I’ve been a maths and science tutor for almost three years now. As a student myself, I understand the distractions, and challenges young people face today, and I know what approach actually works because I’ve been through it recently.

Q&As

I love seeing my students gradually gain confidence; whether it's watching their grades go up, or just simply those 'aha moments' where they understand a difficult concept

I started my own tutoring business at 16, right after my GCSEs, because I felt that the education system has become too driven by pressure and competition, and is losing sight of its true purpose - to give students the skills to think, reason and apply knowledge. There’s this culture of cramming for tests and passively memorising material without truly understanding the content, and I wanted to change that. I think tutoring offers a level of personalised learning that schools often don’t, but I’m also mindful not to fall into the rat race mentality that so many people get caught up in.

What sets me apart is my focus on the process of learning, not just the outcome. In a world fixated on exam scores, students often forget that real learning is about truly grasping the material, not just memorising answers.

Exams test more than memory; they test thinking. That’s why I encourage students to be curious about new material that we learn - to ask questions, make connections and actively engage with the content. Understanding the ‘whys and hows’ makes things a lot more memorable, because we connect that information to what we already know. It gives students the confidence to apply their knowledge and feel like they get what’s going on, rather than passively repeating the same procedure over and over.

When the goal of learning is learning itself rather than chasing grades, the results naturally follow. Learning with intention is counterintuitive, and something many students often miss in an effort to save time and cram. That's why, my focus is not just to teach students to get good scores, but to teach them how to study - a lasting skill that they can carry with them even when their exams are over.

Yes, I offer online tutoring via Google Meets. All students need is a device with a working microphone and camera, and I’ll take care of the rest.

I use an interactive online whiteboard so we can both write in real time, so if students have access to a tablet, that makes it even easier, but it’s not essential.
