James was hired to do work which was basically to remove a shed, an In ground trampoline, paving stones and cart away the rubbish in readiness for our garden room installation. He came across as pleasant which regrettably, made me let my guard down. At the end of the day, even though the job wasn't finished, he assured me that he would be back in two days to finish off. I made the mistake of paying him fully. That was an error of judgement on my part which has taught me a life-long lesson not to get sucked in by any false pleasantness when it comes to workmen. He never returned to finish the job. I contacted him several times since March and he kept saying he was busy with other jobs. I called him again a few days back and he sent me his account number demanding more money so he could come back and finish what we already made full payment for. I realise this was an error of judgement on my part, but now that i have to pay another company to remove the in-ground trampoline, paving stones, and debris, I believe i should put a warning out there so this doesn't happen to anyone else. Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I had contacted you over the weekend and offered to come and see you on the Monday but you failed to reply. I’m genuinely sorry that your experience did not meet your expectations, and I’d like to clarify the circumstances so you understand what occurred and how we addressed the challenges. When we first assessed the site, the excavation appeared to be approximately 2–3 ft deep, and we ordered 1.5 tonnes of backfill material accordingly. Upon removal of the shed and trampoline, we discovered a substantial underground void filled with water—a sinkhole approximately 8 ft deep. This unexpected condition required an immediate, larger delivery of 6 tonnes of aggregate to ensure the hole could be safely and properly backfilled. Because we recognize the importance of completing your project promptly, my colleague and I worked well beyond our scheduled hours—at no additional labor cost to you—to place 5 tonnes of material and stabilize the site before nightfall. We did absorb the extra labor expense, despite the physical toll, to avoid any further disruption to you. There remains one tonne of material still to be placed. You indicated you were departing on holiday, and I offered to schedule the completion on your return as my diary was full. This final lift would require approximately half a morning’s work and would be invoiced accordingly. I appreciate that this may have caused you some surprise, and understand it is frustrating to incur additional material costs. But please appreciate that we hade already undertake a considerable amount of extra labour at no additional fee. Unforeseen ground conditions—such as deep sinkholes—are beyond our control, but we believe in transparent communication and fair billing. We hope this explanation clarifies why the project scope and costs changed so significantly, and we remain committed to completing the final stage of backfilling at your earliest convenience.
