What inspired you to start your own business?
It came from a place of love, but that didn’t make it great advice.
For as long as I can remember, I had a camera in my hand—making films, telling stories. So at 18, I knew: I was going to be a film director. But my dad had other ideas. Get a real degree, he said.
So, I did. Psychology at Edinburgh. And I loved it. I was good at listening, good at helping. I hosted big, laughter-filled dinners where we put the world to rights. Then came more advice: Get a proper job.
London. Corporate life. Success. Money. But happiness? Not so much. The moments I felt most alive were back at those dinners—surrounded by creatives, sparking ideas, supporting each other.
Lightbulb moment.
I left the City and opened a restaurant—a place for creativity, collaboration, and community. I loved it. Fifteen years, a family, and an offer I couldn’t refuse later, I sold the business.
Meanwhile, I saw my husband and my creative friends wrestle with an old, familiar tension: the idea that doing what you love and making money don’t mix. That creativity isn’t a proper job.
Second lightbulb moment.
I knew what I was meant to do. I would coach creatives to thrive—to see their work as valuable, their talent as worth investing in. To show them that success doesn’t have to be a struggle—it can be simple, and even fun.
Ivy Malik Coaching was born.
Since then, I’ve helped thousands of creatives realise their worth and build the rewarding, abundant lives they deserve.
