Born and brought up in Minster village I know the Island pretty well but I rarely ever go back to visit. The South side of the island is wonderful to walk between Elmley and Harty, the North side has the clay cliffs which are brilliant for eocene fossils. The cliffs were my childhood playground but if you're not familiar with them and the beach between the boom at Minster and warden bay don't even think about going there without someone who knows the place as there are some very real dangers! Leysdown is like a forgotten trading post in Australia's Northern Territory and makes Seasalter look like a beauty in the South of France. Please don't go to Sheerness as the North Peckham council estate is prettier and safer. Tell you what, just don't go to Sheppey! The East Kent coast between Tankerton and Hythe and the country side within has everything you want,and remember that the Seasalter and Whitstable beaches are awful and Romney Marsh is very much like Leysdowns big brother More...
