What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
Starting a web design project, talking with those agencies can be a daunting task. Yes, websites are one of those great business tools, but if you go down the wrong path to start with it can quickly become a nightmare. The brief guide will explain 6 things you should remember; these are in no way an exhaustive list but should give you some guidance.
1. What is the aim of your website?
This is probably the most important question to ask yourself, and one I ask all clients. Without a goal or purpose, how do you know what you will want creating, and how it should be created?
2. Do you want people to be able to find you on search engines?
Rather an obvious answer for most, normally the answer is YES. However, most people do not realise what is involved in doing this. It does not magically happen and needs to be part of your budget.
3. Have you considered a responsive design?
Google’s latest update likes mobile optimised website’s if yours is not then you should strongly consider modifying it. If you are looking at a new project, make sure this is a priority!
4. What do your users want?
Many client briefs are written based on what they want to see; very few take the time to consider what their user want. Ask as many of your customers as you can what they would like to see. The response rates will surprise you, customers like being asked.
5. What Sites You Like?
Spend some time looking at competitors, makes notes about what they do well and things you would like to see. Then spend some time looking for that cool design you want, your favourite typeface and colour scheme.
6. Content Managed
Ensure you have easy access to your content so that you can make changes when needed. Content Management Systems (CMS) are the best solution for this.
Have a budget in your mind; website prices can vary a lot. Make sure you understand what you are getting for the money, cheap is not always best. For an idea on pricing check out my web design estimator.
What information do you need from a client before you start work?
We have a questionnaire that we go through with all clients; we find this helps us both understand the goal. Once completed Kingsley Media will send a written proposal listing all things discussed, hopefully, we don't miss anything, but if we do this is an excellent time to tell us.
What sorts of printing projects do you usually cater for?
We are a print management business as well as a designer, so we look after all things print. Lets us know what you need and we source it for you.
Recently we wrote a guide to understanding print on our website. I have copied it in below but unfortunately cannot use any of the images :(
Printing can seem daunting and complicated. Hopefully, this guide will help simplify the process helping you get the best out of your prints.
Means "Grams per square meter", it is the weight of the paper. The paper you use in your home printer is usually around 90gsm; our business cards are 400-450gsm. The menus we all grab from takeaway restaurants are typically 130 - 170gsm.
Means "Cyan-Magenta-Yellow-Key (Black)". This is the colour range used by printers, using these printers recreate the colours used in your artwork. It is important to remember to design in CMYK so your print reflects what is on your screen.
PP (e.g. "12pp")
"Printed Pages" How many pages do you need printing. For example, an A4 piece of paper is an A5 4pp because it has four printed sides each A5.
The difference between CMYK and RGB can be seen opposite. Although this illustration is not 100% accurate, it does show the difference between the two.
See what we offer
This paper type is considered a hybrid between a gloss and matt finish. The paper has a slight sheen but is not a full gloss.
Matt Paper with no noticeable finish such as that found with gloss or silk. It is commonly used for letterheads and compliments slips.
As above but a recycled alternative
The durable fully recyclable plastic used for printing Roller Banners and Exhibition Pop-ups.
Durable plastic is available on posters. We print on these using UV inks that will take longer to fade than other inks. Great for posters exposed to our weather conditions.
Want a sophisticated, modern look try our Matt Lamination. This is a subdued finish that softens colour and adds a smooth texture.
Gloss finish that is ultra shiny makes colours vibrant, rich and hides scuff marks or fingerprints. Ideal for photographic images.
Makes your prints feel like a peach! Honestly!
Colours appear deeper and richer than those on a matt lamination.
Describe your creative process.
What We Do
Website design encompasses many different skills and disciplines in the production and maintenance of websites. The areas of web design include web graphic design; interface design; authoring; user experience design; and search engine optimisation. The term web design is normally used to describe the design process relating to the front-end (client side) design of a website.
Here the scope, requirements, and description of the final website will be determined and documented, including the overall site goals, the number of pages, animations/graphics, features and other content specific to the clients requirement. Wireframes will be created to illustrate all requirements.
Page mock-ups are created that reflect the appearance, look, and feel of the website for visitors. Once these are reviewed and approved by the client, the web development process can continue.
Web pages are created using WordPress to meet the wireframe/design concept, performance, and any particular functionality or requirements. All pages are reviewed by the client, providing appropriate feedback for revision.
What information do you need from a client before you can start work?
As mentioned this is all part of our design questionaire.
What do you love most about your job?
Being creative and designing creations that my clients love!
I literally get to spend my day creating things, one day it could be a website the next day a brochure. It's fun, i love doing it.
What inspired you to start your own business?
It's been something I have wanted to do for years, probably going back to my college days. I never got rid of the desire during University or for the 3 years I worked as a Business Development Manager. I had some great times while I was an employee, but could never shake the nagging part of me that kept pulling me towards building my own business, the idea of creating something from nothing really appealed to me.
I chose to build a business around web and graphic design, I have always had a passion for this. All through college and University I kept self-teaching myself to 'design' . Web design has always interested me, so naturally, the business has headed in that direction.
This doesn't very well answer the question of what inspired me, but I suppose the answer is the idea of creating something from nothing and watching it grow. Who knows where it will lead you.
Plus the other little bonuses of a very short commute, literally down the stairs and the lunchtime walk with my dogs is a very nice perk!
