Great Scot Photography Q&A

Great Scot Photography Q&A

What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?

Experience and natural ability play a major part in continually taking great photographs. An in depth knowledge of lighting, lenses, shutter speeds and depth of field are vital. This knowledge only comes with doing. The more you do, the more you learn, the better you get. There are no shortcuts.
Andy Murray did not win Wimbledon by natural talent alone. Hours on the practice court and in the gym are vital to achieve this but we seldom get to see this part of his success.

What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?

It is vital to understand the end use for photographs in the commercial sector. They must instantly grab your attention and draw you in. With more and more people shopping online, it is vital that goods and services are shown to their best advantage. Ordinary and DIY images sell nothing.
On the social side of my work whether it be a wedding or a portrait, I have learned from experience that most clients leave the main creativity up to me as they see it as part of the service. I always listen to suggestions and then apply my experience to produce images that will stand out from the norm.

What do you love most about your job?

During the time I have been writing this piece, two request have come in. One is a location shoot for an office furniture company and the other for a family portrait in the studio.
Both are quite diverse in nature but equally challenging.
I never know what the week may bring and that is what I love about the work I do.

What inspired you to start your own business?

After 15 years travelling the world as news and sports photographer for newspapers and agencies, I decided that it was time to do something for myself.
I set up Great Scot Photography and based myself in my home town of Glasgow. By keeping up with all the latest technology and continually investing in it, I can offer my clients photographs of the highest standard.

Why should our clients choose you?

Whenever I need the services of something that I cannot do myself, I always go for experience.
When I was youngster living in my first flat, I went down the price route once and ended up spending a small fortune to rectify the damage caused by my belief then, that all plumbers were the same. I learned my lesson the hard way.
Photography never has been and never will be an off the shelf commodity. Your request is precious to you. I will make sure it is captured and presented to properly reflect the moment.
