I have recently retired after 32 years as a secondary maths teacher. I have 11 years experience as a HOD and 7 years as a 2nd in maths. I have taught the whole range of ability and ages from year 7 to year 13, KS3, KS4 and A level maths and further maths. I can teach all A level disciplines with confidence, having a maths degree from Manchester University. I have supported students with their Oxbridge entrance exam preparation and am currently supporting my son prepare for the Oxford maths entrance exam. I am now tutoring maths GCSE and A level. I shall tutor in person locally, and online, using a writing tablet to write on the shared screen. I am based in Ledbury so can travel to the surrounding areas for in person lessons.
Seeing students grow in confidence. Sharing my passion for maths. Giving students the skills and confidence to achieve the grade in their maths that allows them to take the next step in their education or chosen career.
Want to continue doing what I am good at, teaching maths. 1-1 tuition will allow me to really enjoy helping students develop the confidence to make significant progress in their maths.
Teaching in secondary schools for 32 years means I know how to develop a student's mathematical confidence. I know how to develop a topic so that a student acquires the ability to think for themselves. Not to be put off by the unexpected. Learning how to take one step at a time and identify the skills that they can use. This is key, particularly for students hoping to achieve the highest grades in maths.
An area I particularly focus on is to be willing to make mistakes. That is how we develop a really good mathematical understanding and are willing to tackle any question. It can remove the innate resistance to try something that looks hard. It really does lead to much more effective learning.
Yes. I use an online shared whiteboard called Bramble.
