Martin Ely Maths Tutor

‘21 Certificate of Excellence

I am a Maths Tutor living in Brixham, Devon. I have taught mathematics in secondary schools since 2005 and privately since 2007. I now focus entirely on private tuition at all school levels. So these are lower school (Key Stage 3), GCSE Foundation, GCSE Higher level and A level. I obtained the GTP qualification in Mathematics through Exeter University in 2005, although my background is engineering (Bsc Civ. Eng. from Manchester University 1981). Still very mathematical! Tutoring Approach: My students enjoy my informal style of teaching and really get a big boost in confidence from their lessons with me, particularly if they are preparing for examinations. Examination technique and practice is a key area of focus. The feedback I get from my students (and their parents) is that they enjoy and look forward to their maths lessons and gain a lot of confidence in the subject.

What do you love most about your job?

For me the most rewarding thing about one to one teaching is when I have a student who perhaps was not as confident with maths as they should be. Or maybe they were worried about exams and exam techniques, but then gaining the confidence they so badly needed and getting the grades. It's when they come back and tell you they did it! That's when you know you made a difference.

What inspired you to start your own business?

When I was teaching in schools I finished up doing a lot of one to one teaching because the pupils felt confident with how I communicated with them and they liked my teaching style. I enjoyed the direct interaction and seeing where the pupil had misconceptions about certain topics or mathematical techniques. I realised that this is much easier to achieve in an immediate way, one to one.

Why should our clients choose you?

My students like my teaching style which is not rigid or too formal. Most of my students have a sense of humour and they like my sense of humour as well. So they don't think, "Oh no I've got a maths lesson now". If they don't get bored they concentrate more. And get better results!

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

I provide online and face to face tuition. When teaching online I use Zoom as my platform but of course I can then switch between an exam paper or to an online whiteboard (either using Zooms whiteboard or a more mathematically orientated one where needed).

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

If teaching from my home, my students are taught in a large heated conservatory where it is possible to open windows to ensure a flow of air from outside. The entrance is from outside, (not through the house) and there are face masks and hand gel at the entrance. I wear a face mask and so does my student and we keep two metres apart using a long table. I use a graphics pad with a large screen in front of my student so that we can keep a safe distance. If going through an exam paper for example, I have the paper pre-printed for my student to annotate and I have the same paper on my laptop (which can be displayed on the screen) so that I can see the questions and explain things.
We both use the hand gel at the end of the lesson, and the table and any equipment used is sanitised for the next student.
