My name is Jan Steele and I play and teach the saxophone, flute, clarinet and music theory and I'm a composer. I'm a very experienced music teacher with years of experience teaching saxophone, clarinet, flute, music theory and jazz improvization in state and independent schools, colleges, universities, schools of music and privately. Nowadays I confine my music teaching to my home in Caversham, Reading, Berkshire.
I am a Professional Musician and I offer Saxophone, Clarinet & Flute Lessons, whether for help with Exams, or just for fun. If you live local to me, I can come to your house. If you live further away, you can come to me, or I can teach online. I also offer help with improvisation/Jazz, and offer a Jazz Workshop for those who are more proficient on their instrument.

Jon is a great tutor and full of knowledge. I really look forward to my lessons and I always come away with something new. Being disabled comes with challenges and Jon is not fazed one bit and has a lot of patience. He is very warm and good sense of humour. Teaches in a way that helps it stick to the memory and full of encouragement. I would recommend Jon in a heartbeat!
I teach the saxophone and only the saxophone, an instrument that I have been passionate about playing and teaching for more than 30 years. My aim is for you to get as much pleasure and satisfaction from playing as I do, and to achieve this, my technique is to build my lessons around the needs of the individual player and their own personal aims and aspirations. One constant that I do insist on though is that my lessons are enjoyable and as much fun as possible!

I am a seasoned professional having taught and been playing both saxophone and clarinet for the last 30 years. I am at ease teaching absolute beginners to those wanting to improve their tone, jazz playing ability, blues scales, producing those elusive altissimo notes, playing subtones, tricks such as glissando, subtones, playing quietly and much more besides. Been there, done that and can teach you how. If you are just starting the sax or clarinet, I can get you playing within 5 minutes, never failed yet and was even filmed for Sky News to teach the reporter how to play The Pink Panther in a few hours, suffice to say we succeeded! I prefer to teach the ABRSM grades if you wish to follow the grading structure but more than happy to teach Trinity if that is your preference to Grade 8 standard. If you are considering playing either clarinet or sax, the sax is much easier to get to grips with as there are no holes to cover and much more versatile in the various playing styles. The alto sax is the usual one to start on but if you are an adult, you will be perfectly able to start on the tenor sax if you are able to handle the extra weight and slightly more air to push through. I can start you off the first lesson by lending you one of my instruments and then you can either go to a shop and hire or buy to ensure you can practice between lessons. I ensure that you have fun as well as learning a lot in a short amount of time and my recommended 1 hour lesson soon goes. but more than happy to teach the half hour and play and talk faster!! Local home visits available if required.
The satisfaction of the pupil who has achieved a new skill and can produce music that gives so much enjoyment to both player and encouraging audience alike.
Having picked up tips over the years by either my own perseverance or playing and talking with fellow musicians, I love to share the short cuts to make the saxophonist/clarinettist a better player.
I have worked in retail selling woodwind for the last 15 years so I am teaching daily which comes very easy to me as I spot immediately where improvements can be made.
I can prove that anyone regardless of their background and ability can play either sax or clarinet. Nobody is tone deaf and with practice, you can play and anyone listening will know what tunes you are playing. There are some instruments out there that take a lot longer to grasp than either of these.
I play in live bands every week so with my ongoing playing experience, I keep on top of my playing which means I can demonstrate to you how a piece, passage etc should sound. I encourage duets which means we can play together making it a really informative and fun lesson.
Get in touch, I promise you will be glad you did!
