Jan was my son's first clarinet teacher and we would not thank him more. My son had learned clarinet with Jan until he moved on to the Royal College of Music Junior Department where he gained a clarinet scholarship. Later my son gained places at the National Children's Orchestra and National Youth Orchestra of GB. I'd say my son would not have achieved these without Jan's excellent teaching. Jan is friendly, fun, and extremely dedicated. Highly recommended. More...

Jan introduced me to the world of jazz, improvisation and harmony making it seem a lot less daunting! His attention to detail and technique really enhanced my clarinet and saxophone playing and made me want to continue in my musical journey. Highly recommended!

I highly recommend Jan Steele as a sax teacher, who taught me up to Grade 8. Jan is genuine and approachable, great with communication, and always had thorough guidance on developing technique in my lessons. I was always clear on what to focus on (and how exactly to approach it). Jan was very helpful on the theoretical aspects of playing a musical instrument. Understanding rhythm was the biggest weakness of mine as a musician, however Jan did a fantastic job of developing my ability to tackle this with confidence, especially while sight reading music. To this day, I often reflect on this particular element of my learning experience with him, and how lost I would have been had I not had his support and guidance! Playing the sax is a big part of my life, and for many years now I have been gigging frequently with various bands, and I thoroughly enjoy it. I genuinely believe that Jan's calibre of teaching put me on the right pathway in order to do this. Highly recommended as a teacher! More...

Mr Steele is a excellent musician and teacher. My daughter has been learning the flute with him for more than two years. He has given my daughter very effective flute enlightenment and guidance. This year my daughter passed the Abrsm grade 6 with distinction and received an offer for the National Children's Orchestra. Mr Steele is a very knowledgeable and patient teacher, he understands students' abilities and mastery, and gives children efficient advice at different stages of learning. My daughter is very lucky to be his student. Highly recommended ! More...

I started having lessons with Jan as a beginner over ten years ago. He is a very patient and encouraging tutor and taught me everything from learning to read music and play rhythms accurately, to taking Grade exams and play both classical and Jazz styles. Jan is very good at explaining the technical aspects of playing the instrument in order to help students gain a thorough understanding of fingering and embouchure and achieve a good sound. He is methodical in his approach to teaching at every level of the learning process and makes useful suggestions and adaptations necessary for progress. Jan has also helped me to learn to listen and play music by ear, transcribe pieces and improvise over Jazz tunes. With his encouragement I have been able to go on different courses, join a Concert band and play in a Jazz band. I'm happy to recommend Jan as a music tutor for whatever level or aspect of music that you want to work on. More...

Jan taught me both saxophone and clarinet to a very high level (grade 8 and supported A level music). He is a highly experienced musician and a great teacher. He is extremely knowledgeable and passes on his passion for a wide range of musical styles, introducing me to an exciting world of jazz that I may otherwise not have encountered whilst supporting my dream to be able to play my grandads favourite ‘Mozart clarinet concerto’. He is patient, fun and always celebrates students’ successes regardless of their age, ability or ambition. I highly recommend working with Jan, for anyone - beginners or those looking to hone their skills for fun or even looking to become professional. More...

Q&As

I have always enjoyed the experience of teaching people to play a musical instrument, even if they are a complete beginner and lacking in confidence. Most importantly, producing a good sound on a wind instrument really seems to boost a student's confidence, and this is one of the things I really try to focus on from the start.

I have always been self-employed in music since I finished in higher education

Not all my students are high achievers, but I hope that most of them enjoy playing or making music in one way or another. Recently I have had some really big successes, 3 students currently studying at the Royal College of Music Junior Department, one in the National Youth Orchestra, one in the National Childrens' Orchestra, two having just completed 2 years at National Youth Jazz Orchestra Academy have moved on to University/Music College to study music. In music theory, I'm particularly pleased with one student who gained 100% for grade 5, and another who gained 98% for grade 8.

I can teach online provided that the conditions are good (which includes having a good set up at the student's end - a good microphone, speakers or headphones, and camera). However I find that with beginners the best results are obtained with in situ teaching. I can better assess the quality of reeds and instruments when the student is in the same room with me. Teaching music theory online is however much more productive.

Aerating the room, cleaning surfaces, sterilising reeds and mouthpieces.
