‘20 Certificate of Excellence

I teach piano and music theory with a particular interest in teaching adults, who make up about 70% of my pupils. Beginners or more advanced students are all welcome right up to diploma standard. I am known for my friendly, but professional approach in lessons and I'd be pleased to help you with your piano progress. I am also an ABRSM examiner, which gives me a special insight into exam requirements, though most of my adult students would run a mile from an exam room! I have diplomas from Trinity College of Music, London where I studied in the 1970's and have had a portfolio career teaching, examining, performing and composing ever since. Do look at my web-page, www.northcornwallpianolessons.co.uk which gives an idea of how my teaching practice runs.

What do you love most about your job?

The enthusiasm and progress of my students. Of course there are frustrations and difficulties along the way - students and teachers are only human - but seeing progress and increasing musical awareness is extremely rewarding for all concerned.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I have had experience of teaching in schools and found it quite a frustrating experience. In my own studio I can be flexible in approach and use whatever texts I think are best for the individual.

Why should our clients choose you?

I have lots of experience, a flexible and (I'm told) an encouraging approach. I have been asked, "What method will you use to teach Josh?" "The Keith and Josh method!" I replied. The joy of one-to-one tuition is that it can be tailored.

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

Online is best - via FaceTime, Skype or Zoom. FaceTime seems to have the best sound, though Skype is adequate. Zoom is fine if it has been set up well, but it seems harder to achieve this. Thought needs to be given to the placing of the camera. It needs to be about 1500mm above the floor and more to the side of the piano - just as my eyes would be if I were in the room with you. It doesn't matter which side of the piano you place the camera.

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

Most lessons are still online which reduces the number of people attending the studio. Face to face lessons are now spaced ten minutes apart to avoid a 'waiting room' effect. The piano keys are regularly cleansed with an approved spray and ventilation has been increased. Students are encouraged to wash their hands before touching the piano keys.
