If your dog has behavioural issues, whether it involves anxiety, barking, stress or whatever else, Cardiff Canine Citizens works with dogs and their owners to resolve problems.Caroline Cowan is the dog behaviourist / psychologist behind the company, offering both group training classes working towards the Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme (KCGCDS) Bronze, Silver and Gold awards, and one-to-one consultations and training sessions. She's owned many rescue dogs of different breeds and crosses, and currently has several including a Bullmastiff, Rottweiler cross, Skye Terrier cross, and a another mix of Doberman, Dogue de Bordeaux and American Bulldog! She seems to specialise in working with challenging breeds and has even appeared on TV and radio as a behavioural expert. She's well-qualified, and works as a local authority dog warden in addition to her training and behavioural work, which covers Cardiff, Newport, Bridgend and the Vale of Glamorgan. Her private behavioural consultations don't come cheap, however, but you're paying for her many years of experience: within 10 miles of central Cardiff it costs £95 for a two hour session.

Come by to help with my dogs random behaviour of deciding they would start tearing shreds out of each other to the point where they was drawing blood couldn't walk the lot after being happy for a few years together. Took her advice on board, found her very passionate and caring just by the amount of time spent asking me things to get to know and understand their background, my life and what has changed , haven't had a problem since. Dogs are happy now too and they also loved her!

All services are relationship centred, welfare focused, and reward based. All services are inclusive of a visit to your home, a personalised rehabilitation / behaviour modification / training plan, and one month's free telephone / video call / email / messaging service support. Living with a reactive dog or a dog lacking essential life skills can be a debilitating experience, and my mission is to restore balance and happiness to the lives of all dogs and their guardians.
I was inspired to start this company by my own wonderful rescue dog, Bella-Louise.
When I saw her at a local rescue centre, her charming face and kooky name were just too hard to resist. I fell in love immediately (as you do) and she was home within a matter of days. Already 10 years of age, and without any knowledge of her background, I didn't have a clue where to start. She often displayed behaviour that I can only describe as slightly eccentric!; so I embarked on a journey to explore the workings of the canine mind. That journey continued, and Lead By Example was established.
In 2017 we welcomed another lovely rescue to our family, Megan.
As is often the case with rescue dogs, we enjoyed a brief honeymoon period before she was ready to tell us how she really felt about life. Megan finds many aspects of daily life difficult (more than we'd bargained for!) but with lots of love, patience, and a carefully managed rehabilitation plan, we've made remarkable progress over the last year or so. She's a bright young thing, is learning to love life, and reminds us every day of the joys and challenges of living with a reactive dog.
I provide relationship centred, welfare focused, reward based learning for canines and their companions.
The relationship between us and our dogs is a unique connection. Strengthening that connection through trust, fun, and motivational learning, shapes positive behaviour with lasting results.
And it's the only way to achieve those results.
I never, under any circumstances, use aversives. They exacerbate the behaviour 'problem', cause further behaviour problems (fear, stress, aggression, amongst others), do not teach a dog the behaviour we wish to see instead, damage the relationship we have with our dogs, and cause lasting psychological and physiological damage. They are cruel, unnecessary, and ineffective.
Positive methods are not only kind and humane, but they're scientifically proven.
