The Blagden Consultancy

‘21 Certificate of Excellence

The Blagden Consultancy have been Apple Mac Specialists in London for over thirty-five years, dedicated to keeping Macs running and working efficiently. Basically, we do this- We diagnose and repair Macs. In a lot of cases they don't need a repair, just some expert attention from someone who genuinely knows the right way round a Mac! We do this for large companies, small companies, one-man/woman bands, individuals and families, graphic designers, photographers, publishers, accountants, garages, personal trainers, dog walkers and a few well-known celebrities. We upgrade and transform the speed of older Macs. We can do this with individual computers or whole offices and studios. Look at any photograph of students lectures, over half will be using Macs. Watch the Bark 'Discover the story behind Bark' video and realise that this whole platform is built using Macs. We network Macs with Ethernet cabling, WiFi, WiFi Mesh, PowerLine (networking using mains wiring) or a combination. We backup Macs with single and multiple drives, network drives (NAS), Cloud and, for clients with big files, client retrievable NAS units in a purpose-built London Datacenter. Most importantly, once we have a client's Mac running well with no problems, we like to keep them there with our Preventative Maintenance visits. We run specialist maintenance scripts and diagnostic apps over the hardware and software to ensure they are working as well as they can. That means no down-time and allows the staff to get their jobs done without irritating glitches or loss of work. During Covid we are seeing a huge increase in laptop damage, mainly screens or liquid spills, so contact us with the serial number of your computer ready and we can help you. The serial number is on the bottom of the laptop in VERY small letters. This lets us know the exact model and specification of your computer and really speeds things up. If your computer is working then go to the Apple Menu (top left of screen) and pull down to 'About This Mac' and let go. The first thing you will see is a panel with the Serial Number listed at the bottom of the group of figures in the middle. TIP: You can highlight the Serial Number and use the Edit Menu at the top of the screen to copy and paste it to save making an error.

What do you love most about your job?

John Blagden - I love the idea of going out in the morning and not knowing exactly what I'm going to find, or who I'm going to meet (or what mood they'll be in). Solving Mac problems by thinking the issue through, which with my three decades of experience allows me to really focus, then testing the issue to see if I'm correct and coming up with a solution or options for my clients and handing back a working computer with their data on it is something I never get tired of.

What inspired you to start your own business?

Originally I was a professional photographer and reprographer (repro graphics), and around 1985 when I was working as the Technical Rep for a specialist photographic materials supplier, saw these little beige boxes with 9" mono screens (the original Macs) appearing on people's desks. Although I had my own computer, an Amstrad 8256, the Mac just blew me away!

I very quickly realised that this was the future of design, publishing and printing, which at that time was nearly 100% based on photographic materials manipulated by hand.

I worked for a couple of AppleCenter retail organisations as their graphics specialist, but in 1993 I started The Blagden Consultancy so that I had control. I took dozens of companies through the famous 'Desktop Publishing Revolution' of the early 90's as my expert knowledge of what how they had done it before allowed me to explain the best route forward for them as individuals or companies. Some of those people are still clients.

Why should our clients choose you?

With the combined expertise of myself and my engineer, who has 30 years experience and is probably one of the best Mac repairmen/upgraders in London, our clients should expect a very high level of professionalism, politeness, attention to detail, punctuality and ability to explain complex issues or options in an understandable way.
