Ed and team worked on our house for about a year on 3 medium/big projects: a bathroom renovation, a loft conversion and a rear extension (planning and design included for the latter 2). The craftmanship is fantastic - 2 months in and we haven't had to call them back for any snags. Most of the time Ed spotted and fixed it before we even noticed. We work with a lot of tradesmen over the year, and his team is probably the best we come across, both in skills and attitude. How can someone tell if their Garage is suitable for conversion?
A garage is usually suitable if it has a solid foundation and a ceiling height to allow for insulation and flooring. We look for structural integrity in the walls and the condition of the roof. During our initial site survey, we also check for damp issues and ease of access for utilities like electricity and heating to ensure it can become a comfortable, habitable space.
Run us through the different stages of the Garage conversion process - what's involved?
The process begins with a detailed design and structural survey, followed by securing any necessary building regulations. We start the physical work by stripping the garage, upgrading the floor with damp-proofing and insulation, and bricking up the garage door. Next comes the "first fix" for electrics and plumbing, followed by wall insulation, plasterboarding, and skimming. We finish with "second fix" installations, flooring, and a final walkthrough to ensure a high-quality finish.
How can someone tell if their loft is suitable for conversion?
The primary factor is head height; you generally need adequate meters from the top of the ceiling joists to the bottom of the ridge timber. We also assess the roof pitch and the type of roof structure, traditional rafter roofs are often easier to convert than modern fink trusses. We also look at where a staircase can be positioned to ensure the new floor integrates seamlessly with the rest of your home.
