Dave Thompson is the main mixing, mastering recording engineer and guitar tutor at Hyperbright Studios. With an MMus in Music composition, focussing on creative signal processing in electronic music, and a BMus in Jazz, Popular and commercial music, focussing on guitar performance and a musicological analysis of Head Hunters by Herbie Hancock, Dave has a varied academic past. However, Dave also has a huge amount of hands on gigging, sound engineering and recording studio experience in a wide variety of different areas. He has been gigging as a musician and recording as a sound engineer for over 15 years, and is also a member of the registry of guitar tutors. At Hyperbright studios we have excellent facilities for guitar tuition. Dave Thompson is has been a member of the registry of guitar tutors for over 10 years and has been teaching guitar for even longer. He has a degree in jazz, popular and commercial music performance, a masters degree in music composition, grade 8 on electric guitar, and is an associate performer of nationwide music examinations (APNME) His pupils have had a lot of personal success musically, with past pupils going on to become session musicians, going to university to study music, or some of which who simply view guitar playing as a hobby which they enjoy and want to become better at. Recently, one of David's pupils; George Griffiths achieved a grade 8 distinction on the London College of Music acoustic guitar grade exams. George still continues lessons with David as he enjoys them so much, and is presently studying towards the Trinity board Grade 6 in Electric guitar. The studio facilities at Hyperbright studios offer a perfect environment for teaching the guitar. Dave's philosophy to teaching the guitar is that it should be a multimedia and multi-sensory experience that is tailored to the learning style of the individual pupil. Some students like to learn by playing to backing tracks of the songs which they are learning, and for that, we have an outstanding Genelec 2.1 sound system consisting of a pair of genelec 8330a's and a 7050b subwoofer, played though RME audio conversion on a top of the range Apple iMac, running Amplitube 4. This allows you to play to your favourite backing tracks, slow down sections to focus on certain lead lines, all through one of a massive library of guitar amplifiers and effects. However, if you don't like amplifier simulators, we also have you covered, in the form of a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe tube amp, or a Marshall DSL 40C, for the best of tube amp tone loveliness. If you want to be a bit more old school and learn acoustic guitar, we also have you covered, with a few acoustic guitars lying around at all times, and a wonderful acoustically treated room which makes pretty much anything sound amazing. We also have a fully stocked up library of guitar tuition books, with well structured lessons tailored to a wide variety of guitar styles. If you want to be entered into guitar grade exams, then there are a huge amount of pathways available which are suited to what ever your learning need or your desired skill development. Right now, we are preparing pupils for Guitar Exams with Trinity College of music, London College of music and RSL Rockschool exams. All of which can result in UCAS points if you pass an exam between grade 6 and 8, and can help massively with university applications, as universities love prospective students who take part in extra curricular activities within music.
I love seeing my guitar pupils develop as players over the time that I have taught them. Especially when starting with younger pupils who I have the privilege to teach for a long time; I get to see them grow up and develop both as musicians and as people. It's a wonderfully rewarding thing to feel like I have been a part of that process, and feel it's my greatest achievement as a person to see them succeed as musicians.
I wanted to have my own space a create, and record music, rehearse with my band; and to teach the guitar. Before having this space I was depending on travelling to people's houses for lessons and for a number of reasons this was impractical. I also wanted a good setup for recording and mixing music.
My studio was designed to be the best at all of them things and I'm very proud of myself for designing and building it.
I have a strong passion and dedication to my pupils, the music I create and produce, and push myself very hard to achieve the best standards of media creation in this area. I really want my clients to be happy with the services I provide, and always try to go the extra mile to achieve that.
