About

Hello. I am a full-time tutor working in Coventry and the surrounding towns. I am a fully qualified teacher with over 20 years experience in the classroom, with roughly 18 years experience as a tutor too. I tutor Maths and English and at present I am tutoring children in years 5,6,7,8 and 9 and I have just completed GCSEs with 8 year 11s, so I have some spaces left now.

Tutoring

We came across Paul on Bark.com and were initially drawn to his profile, which highlighted his 20 years of experience in the classroom and 18 years as a tutor. He mentioned tutoring children from years 5 to 9 and recently completing GCSE tutoring with Year 11 students. After an hour-long conversation, we felt confident that Paul could support our child, who faces challenges with ADHD, auditory processing issues, and memory retention. To reiterate, Paul was fully comfortable taking this on and had no concerns. We left the decision in his hands and respected it, all while continuing conversations with other tutors—there was no pressure, other than being completely transparent with Paul.

Our child is generally a decent and eager learner, always looking forward to tutoring sessions. In fact, every Saturday at 4 pm, our child eagerly awaits “tutor time.” We genuinely believed Paul would provide the support and understanding we were seeking, especially with his wealth of experience.

However, after working with Paul for a little over 3 months, we were shocked and deeply disappointed by his sudden and unprofessional decision to stop tutoring. His reason for leaving? Our child fidgeted with a rubber and went to the sellotape drawer. Despite the challenges our child faces, Paul chose not to address this behavior constructively. Instead, he abruptly walked away, without offering any explanation or solution, and voiced that he did not have the patience to continue.

What’s even more troubling is the impact Paul’s departure had on our child. After he left, our child was in tears, questioning if they had done something wrong and doubting their abilities. Our child genuinely liked Paul and had invested in the tutoring relationship. No child should ever feel that way after a tutoring session, and we were left to pick up the emotional pieces.

A professional tutor would have sat down with us, explained the situation, and worked with us to come up with a plan of action. Instead, Paul simply stated, “I don’t want to be here,” and left without any consultation. This was incredibly damaging and hard to understand, especially from someone with over 20 years of experience.

What makes this even more frustrating is that from day one, we made it clear that our child has learning challenges. Paul himself commented on the progress our child had made, which we could see too, along with the school. However, on the day of his departure, Paul labeled our child as “lazy” and “couldn’t be bothered,” despite fully knowing the challenges our child faces. Paul undid three months of progress in minutes, and we’re left wondering how someone with his level of experience could act in such a harmful and unprofessional manner.

We are now left feeling deeply concerned. The progress our child had made—whether learning to tell the time, improving in maths, or gaining confidence—was all undone by Paul’s abrupt departure.

This review is based purely on our experience, and we encourage potential parents to read all reviews before making an informed decision. We’re not bitter, just genuinely surprised by how someone with over 20 years of experience could handle such a situation in such an unprofessional manner.

Maths Tutoring

I highly recommend Paul. Our son has recently passed the 11+ exams for Solihull school, Princethorpe college and King henry's.
Paul tutors both our boys, he is very reliable, has a great style of teaching which the boys have really engaged with and has built a great teaching rapport with both boys.

Tutoring

My step daughter has been badly let down by her school and at the end of Y10 was awarded an ungraded for her Y10 exam in Mathematics. Paul responded immediately to my request for a private Maths tutor for Y11. He has been 100% reliable and with a very gentle approach he has really helped her improve throughout Y11 and has built up her confidence in the subject significantly. She now appreciates that it is OK to go wrong and move on to the next question - something that prior to Paul's intervention might have derailed her completely. I am so grateful for Paul's hard work and encouragement this year. Highly recommended! More...

Student M was at level 3 in Maths, when we began lessons in December. With hard work and guidance by me she achieved level 5 in her Maths GCSE in June, securing her place in the sixth form. Great result.

I would highly recommend Paul as a tutor, we are currently preparing our child for 11+ exam and i am delighted with Paul’s teaching technique and his approach. If you are looking for someone who is firm and fair and knows how to extract the best out of you then he is the right person. Great communication and service provided and very fairly priced considering he comes to your house. Thank you Paul. More...

Q&As

I enjoy helping the children and students learn, especially when they see they can do it and the progress they have made. I find it especially gratifying assisting those who are unsure and believe Maths or English is only something 'clever people' can do-but it turns out they can do it too!

I enjoy working for myself and I like the flexibility it offers me. The business relies solely on me,my efforts and I am not told what to do by anyone else, so I have to do well and make sure the students learn if I am to get enough work- I have to do a good job and I do.

I'm very good at my job.I have helped many, many students, near 200 now. I have helped lots of students pass their GCSEs, boosted their grades and helped them pass, when, if they relied on the school they would not pass.Others have pushed up their grades-some I think by two grades, some by one, others probably by more (it's hard to tell). I have helped younger ones pass SATS and private school exams and the 11+ exam (which is very difficult).
Tutoring is my job,I have no other,so I have to do it well to secure an income. I am reliable and committed to my work and I never let clients down. I'm good at teaching and showing the students what to do. I teach all years from year 3 to year 11, so I know how to help the students to progress and where we need to aim.

Yes. We do Facetime or use Zoom to do our lessons at the moment.Since last May, my year 11s, and younger ones in years 5,6,7 and 8 have been doing our lessons online. It seems to work quite well.

I drop off work through the letterbox or photograph it to send it for the client to print off. Contact only through text messages or Facetime or Zoom at the moment.

Services

I offer Maths and/or English lessons from year 3 to year 11. I teach SATS, 11+ Grammar school exams, general English and Maths skills and GCSE Maths and English.
We do one hour lessons, sometimes one and a half hours and I give out homework.
