Grant created plans for 5 executive dwellings on our piece of land and handled much of the planning aspects, particularly regarding clarifications required by the council's planning team. He has good experience of dealing with councils and knows how things have to be done in order to comply. He knew the surveys that would be required for this small scale development and shared his contacts for these. He was knowledgeable, professional and responsive. This was my first time employing the services of an Architect, and not really knowing what to expect I was a little nervous about being given a ludicrous plan that I either didn't want or couldn't afford. My finances were the priority and naively I only had the TV programmes to go on, where everything seems to spiral out of control with bad planning. Grant was a straight talking godsend and listened to my ideas and my quirks, and offered great advice. I was worried that I would offend an architect if I didn't accept 'all' their ideas but Grant worked hard to make my ideas come alive and only really changed or offered alternatives with excellent reasoning, all the time explaining why I should or shouldn't. He made the process easy, taking care of all the planning submission and follow up, and kept me informed at every stage. The quote given at the beginning of this process didn't waver, and so I paid exactly what I had anticipated, which was so important to me. As I learned about alternatives during the build, Grant was on hand to advise what could and couldn't be changed within the criteria we had approved, and helped to submit a change which I needed approval for. My builders never had an issue with any of the drawings done, and the build went as smoothly as it could possibly have done during a pandemic. He was absolutely invaluable in providing advice on obtaining listed building consent for our Grade II* listed house with a number of complicated building and access issues. He also worked closely with a historic consultant bringing them in only as and when needed which helped keep costs to a minimum. He liaised with the Local Authority applying pressure and chasing in a professional manner with results whilst communicating with us in a realistic and patient way re the various options and the risks involved. What do you love most about your job?
Meeting lots of new people and helping them design their homes is a privilege, as we spend most of our lives in our homes, so it must meet our needs. It is fun to show clients new ideas, surprise them with clever design solutions and to see it all built. Visiting clients after their home is finish is a real pleasure, as you can see the difference their extension or new home has made to their day to day lives.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I spent many years working on high-end residential projects in London and Surrey. I wanted to take this knowledge and expertise and see how I could design inexpensive buildings on a tight budget, but still maintain that high quality finish. You don´t have to spend a fortune to get that level of finish you want. It is about clever design solutions, which is what we do best.
