Sing With Style

I decided to take singing lessons because I have been playing guitar for several years, but felt under-confident about my voice in any sort of ‘camp-fire’ sing-along situation. I wasn’t even sure if I could sing in tune. Selina is a local singing teacher and she is fantastic. It turns out that I can actually sing in tune, hold notes and project my voice. Selina is supportive, positive and inspirational. She has pitched the lessons all at my level and takes time to get things right. She will say if something is not right and we give it another go. I have made a lot of progress in 4 months of lessons working on breath, resonance as well as songs and musicality. I am much more confident now. Selena Mara is incredible; she was warm, patient, insightful and intuitive when it came to coaching me with singing and offering so many useful, practical tips to improve my technique, delivery, and pitch transitions which were struggling in some areas whilst acknowledging my strengths. If you want to improve your voice and learn to sing, I highly recommend Selena. She offers lessons that provide a strong foundation in singing, which has significantly boosted my confidence. I used to doubt my singing ability, but once I learned the tools and techniques, I gained the confidence to sing in a choir without constantly worrying about how I sounded. I’ve taken a series of singing lessons with Selena Mara and having now finished the series, I can report that my singing is much better, with a stronger voice and better tones. I feel as though I’m using my body, muscles etc in the right ways to sound good and sing with power. I feel confident that I can continue to improve by using the exercises that Selena taught me, again in the future. We’ve worked online part of the time so I have the recordings of the videos of the lessons on zoom which is very helpful. Selena shares many very useful techniques and they work well at teaching the body how to sing more beautifully and powerfully. It is a gradual process and I definitely noticed there were a lot of improvements once I got motivated to practice between lessons. So I would recommend working steadily and I’m pretty confident anyone would get really good results. The best yet. I wonder what kind of a messy my life would have been, had it not for the power of music. I like to listen to calming and empowering messages from music, but I love to sing and share messages of hope to others. For years, my soul yearned to be able to sing but with very little success. However, since I met Selena and started some vocal and musical lessons, my perception on music and singing has been transformed to a higher level, my confidence and knowledge of music has grown from strength to strength and I'm so amazed of how powerful one can become once met with the right teacher (vocal coach). I was really apprehensive about starting singing lessons even though it has been something I’ve wanted to do for years. Being in my mid-seventies and wishing to attempt to sing for the first time since junior school I was very apprehensive on where or how to find out if it was possible. I had 6 months to achieve my target of singing a special song to my daughter at her wedding. Having searched online several times I kept going back to the Sing with Style web site as I was impressed with the variation and option of an introductory course at a reasonable cost. I nervously made the call and having explained what my target was I made my first appointment with Selena. I had no idea what to expect but was soon put at ease by Selena as she explained what we would be going through in the next hour and then we would make a decision on what was the best way to progress. During that session I was surprised how much variation of movement, stature, vocal and body exercises can make a difference to the pitch and reach of your voice. It became obvious to us both after that first hour that I was going to need more tuition. Selena was very clear in explaining what I would have to practice on and showed me various vocal and physical exercises that I would have to do if I wanted to progress. Having carried out six further lessons we came to an understanding that although I had gained in confidence and there was some improvement, I was not going to be proficient at singing. Having Selena's support, we decided the way to progress was to just concentrate on the song I wanted to sing at my daughter’s wedding. By now I knew that ‘singing’ was not in my nature but as long as I could make a decent effort then it was worth continuing with Selena’s help and encouragement. After a short break we continued for a further four meetings during which time Selena prepared me to sing the song I had selected. I also listened and practiced the song every day and on our final session we recorded my version so that it could be played as I danced with my daughter at her wedding. I have a great amount of appreciation for Selena and would not hesitate in recommending her as a tutor. She has extreme musical knowledge, is sympathetic, with lots of patience and a pleasure to be with. I did the online course with Selena, which was an excellent and educational experience. I work as an actor. - At first, I didn’t think it would truly benefit me doing it online, but because the sessions were recorded, I was able to watch them repeatedly. (Especially if something was not clear.) Understanding the mechanics of the voice is key and I was able to discipline myself with voice exercises that were set for my requirements. The lessons have benefited my acting voice as well as my singing. In my opinion on par with RSC workshops and other voice coaches I've worked with when creating a mellifluous, projecting sound.
