What do you love most about your job?
'Second Home, First Love' is our motto. First things first, my team is what I love most about the job. I'm privileged to work with such a focussed and talented bunch of people who give their all to each project. To say that every day is different is something of an understatement. One day we might be asked to design a CGI tour around the human genome, the next making talking bananas made from plasticine. Animation is about creating an illusion of life in the inanimate and the conceptual. My favourite part of the job is looking into a set and feeling like you're looking into another world.
What inspired you to start your own business?
It was a mixture of accidental circumstances, serendipity, a change in the weather and a dogged determination to make our own mark.

Stop motion animation
Puppets, miniature castles, paper, trees, breeze blocks, pizzas, we’ll try anything to achieve tactile realism. Animation with models, puppets and things. Real studio, real lights, real camera.
2D/Digital Animation
Hand-drawn or clean-edged characters with plenty of personality. Sketched out for that hand-made feel or sharp vectors for a slick design style.
CGI Animation
Go virtually anywhere. We created the big bang for ‘The Sky At Night’ and giant wooden castles for ‘The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.’
Motion Graphics
Augment any film or bring your identity to life with composited effects, animation and typography. We can use animation to enhance any visual story. What’s yours?
Puppetry
Whether covered in fur or carved from wood, we can inject some theatrical performance into your idea. We handcraft everything in house, then choreograph each performance with some of the most skilled puppeteers in the country.
Visual Effects
From fire and ice to fancy bubbles, our set-up enables us to shoot VFX elements for documentary, drama or corporate films. We also have an SR1 motion control rig which comes in handy for pack-shots and multi-pass trickery.
Motion Control
The Manta Motion Control (’moco’) system is the only independent facility of its kind in the
Midlands, designed and developed at Second Home Studios. As used by Sony Pictures on recent
brand-image and channel promotions. The rig has 7 Axes of motion:
