I sadly lost my husband of 25 years in October last year and it broke my heart. He was everything to me and I was struggling greatly to get used to my 'new normal' without him. I knew I needed help and to chat with someone I didn't know personally. I found Paul Butler through Bark and his photo and profile appealed to me as someone very relaxed and kind. I didn't want group sessions, I needed one on one and I needed patience and understanding. Paul was very professional explaining all about EDU Grief Therapy Counselling, I had a session once a week for ten weeks. There was never any pressure. I would admit to feeling very nervous on my first session as I had never had any kind of counselling before but I need not have worried. On my third session and thereafter I did feel a lift in my frame of mind, hard to explain, I still missed my husband so much but found I could talk about him without filling up. Paul covered grief in a way that it can affect not only the loss of someone you love but different aspects of it and explained grief comes in many forms. We covered relationships with different people in my life whether good or bad but at the end of the session I felt stronger, I knew I was still going to cry and have bad days but they are bad 'days' not weeks at a time. I can't recommend Paul enough to be honest, I cried a bit, I talked a lot and I listened to every word and I did come away feeling more in control and mainly, as i said before stronger. Thank you More...

Bereavement Counselling

I first reached out for help when I was facing loosing my beloved dog Hank. Having struggled with several bereavements in my life of family and pets, I was recognising early signs of anxiety and becoming emotionally overwhelmed before I even had to say goodbye. I knew I needed help to navigate this difficult time and that is when Paul saw my cry for help on a general enquiry I submitted to late one night through blurry teary eyes! I have had counselling before which was ok but I needed more support. From our first telephone conversation Paul made me feel at ease, in a safe space and that he was truly there to help me. There was no pressure and we quickly agreed to meet. Paul was warm, welcoming and I knew this was just what I needed. I have nearly completed the 10 sessions of the Edutherapy course with Paul’s guidance and can hand on heart say I feel so much more in control. The course has made me look at emotional connections, losses and relationships in a healthier way and has given me back control when navigating my own emotions. If like me you are feeling overwhelmed and lost, please just have a conversation with Paul. He is lovely and explains everything so well. I haven’t just had counselling, Paul has taught me skills that I can carry forward in my life and will help me for years to come. More...

I started researching grief counsellors for my mother about a year after my father passed away. Following a 64 year marriage and being left deeply feeling the loss of not only him but her independence, mobility (due to a long illness) and her friends (having moved a long way from home to be near family for support) she was in a low state and I was worried for her mental health.
Your online information was reassuring and you were clearly experienced and well qualified.
Following an initial phone call I felt confident in introducing you to my mother.
I think that initially my mother was a little sceptical that the program would benefit her - she had become used to talking about her loss in clichés and had clearly bottled up her real feelings for fear of appearing weak.
However, she quickly engaged with you and the program. The program ran its course but my mother was keen to maintain regular sessions because it had become apparent that the weekly release of emotion and refocus onto more positive thoughts was a powerful and healing part of her life.
She looked forward to seeing you and felt significantly better after each visit. Being able to talk freely in the comfort of her own home was a huge benefit and helped her to hang on to some sense of control too - including choosing the refreshments offered!
I do not think either of us imagined that the initial program would grow so organically into the warm and compassionate working relationship that it did and that it would last until the last few days of her life.
The positive impact on her and subsequently on us as a family is hard to explain in words but it was hugely significant and we are so grateful.
You look like a friendly person in your profile picture but people should know that you are much more than just that - an incredibly compassionate, open-minded and intuitive counsellor and life coach. You started working with my mother when she was in her late 80s and was an undeniably tough nut to crack (following a life time of quite rigid living) but through gentle persistence, excellent humour and a stimulating exchange of ideas you brought back a light to her latter years that I don’t believe she thought was possible.
Thank you so very much.

After suffering the sudden & unexpected loss of my Sister and additionally during the few months prior to her death, losing 4 close friends again very suddenly ~ I found myself in a very low & sad place. Some months later I still found myself not being able to deal with a number of aspects pertaining to the deaths of my friends & especially that of my Sister – it was then I felt that I may need some Grief Counselling to help me.
I asked friends who had, had various types of counselling in the past if they could recommend someone ~ but those recommended to me ~ upon reading their various websites etc., they just didn’t appear to have the fit I felt I was looking for ~ it was then that I decided to research for someone myself. That is when I came upon Paul Butler / Grief & Life Coach.
Reading Paul’s Website there was an immediate impact & connection for me ~ that this person appeared ~ honest, humble and down to earth ~ he proffered alot about himself along with the types of Therapy he offered - I was impressed and made contact with him immediately.
Within ~ a few sessions I could see that through his gentle and understanding manner Paul encouraged me to open up about matters that I hadn’t discussed or thought about in many, many years. In addition he helped me work through the causes of my deep anger at the aspects surrounding the death of my Sister, and I was able to move forward with only warm memories of her.
As the sessions progressed I felt so much calmer & pleased that I had been able to deal with & basically “put to bed” many of the aspects that I needed to & some that I didn’t even realise that I needed to.
This was all down to the way in which Paul conducted the sessions ~ he got to understand me very quickly and also dealt delicately with matters he knew I was having difficulty addressing and that I needed to deal with ~ he remained at ALL times, kind, understanding and at all times ~ gently encouraging me to come to the necessary outcomes needed ~ he never took the path of “ You must etc etc” ~ and I totally believe my recovery was 100% successful due to Paul’s attitude as to how he treats his patients.
Paul to, has a wonderful sense of humour and is a very kind, understanding & approachable person, we often would veer off what we were chatting about and in time returned ~ all valuable to my recovery.
I can highly recommend anyone who is seeking help, to make contact with Paul (Butler) ~ you most definitely will not regret it ~ furthermore, Paul accommodated me when I was unable to attend sessions at his office by seeing me at an alternate venue ~ which was more than helpful, from the ‘get-go’ I felt safe & comfortable with him ~ which is of prime importance in situations like this.
Thank you Paul, for helping me through some tough issues which I thought were insurmountable, and to move forward feeling more like my old self.
With warm regards,
Shanon

After researching potential grief counselors I selected Paul as on his website, he seemed to understand the feelings, thoughts and emotions I was experiencing. I had suffered significant loss in the last 5 years losing 2 children and more recently my mother. I felt lost and I didn't know which way to turn. On the outside I tried to look in control but internally I was not functioning.
After an initial meeting with Paul I realized I had made the right choice choosing him as my grief counselor although my initial thoughts were "how can someone help, what do they do or tell you?" That very quickly became apparent during the programme. It allows you to step by step become aware of the unresolved grief inside you that you have been suppressing. There were times acknowledging that grief was extremely tough but Paul who is so kind, easy to talk to, and one of the nicest people I have ever met made the process so much easier. He really understands the grief process.
By the time the course ended I felt so much more in control and although I know there will still be sad days ahead, I feel more able to cope and accept them.
I would most definitely recommend talking to Paul if like me you feel emotionally drained and lost. He will certainly give you the tools to live again. Thank you so much Paul

I made contact with Paul having realised that several things have changed significantly in my life and not all for the better including some of my behaviours
We had a very good initial telephone conversation
After that conversation he offers a chemistry session to make sure he’s the right person for you to work with and vice versa
I knew what the issues were that needed addressing, and thought going to Paul he'd give me all the answers
That’s not the case. His expertise make you explore the issues you’ve gone to him with and identify what you can do to change those.
What he did for me was help me put a plan in place so that I’m far more comfortable with myself now in managing such situations.
Early days, but all is going well so far and if it doesn’t, I would go back again.
Anybody needing some support coaching counselling or direction he is your man
I have no hesitation in recommending him
Many thanks Paul, for all your help and assistance.

I came to Paul at the end stages of therapy, after navigating an extremely difficult period in my mental health journey. I felt directionless and lost, trying to find my footing again after some major life events and the deep emotional work I had done with my therapist. I knew I needed support in transitioning into the next chapter of my life, and that is when I found Paul.

Paul coached me through a wide range of challenges, helping me build on the foundation I had already laid. He was always patient, kind, and deeply understanding, but also unafraid to challenge me when I needed it, which I truly appreciated. We connected over literature, and he introduced me to insightful books that helped me reflect and grow. Through our sessions, I began to understand myself more deeply and started to shape a new direction for the post therapy version of myself.

The grief program, in particular, was transformative. Paul helped me understand what grief really is and identify how it was showing up in my life. I was able to process a profound family bereavement and, with his guidance, create a new relationship with my loved one after their death. I was able to let go of lingering guilt, resentment, and emotional weight. I now feel lighter, freer, and more at peace.

I believe Paul could help anyone who is struggling with grief, loss, or simply feeling stuck or directionless. He has a deep understanding of emotions, anxiety, and the internal programs and parts we all carry. His ability to gently disrupt unhelpful patterns and assumptions is incredibly powerful.

If you are considering working with Paul, know that you will be met with compassion, insight, and a safe space to grow. His support has been invaluable to me, and I am so grateful for the clarity and healing I have found through his coaching.

Depression Counselling

I was struggling to cope with depression and felt I had to find help. Through Bark Paul contacted me and offered me an introductory session to see if he would be able to help me.
I knew a lot of my problems stemmed from the death of my mother and how this had never been resolved with the consequences having been at the root of many of my problems.
Paul was easy to talk to, he listened and through the programme he guided my thoughts and encouraged me to se different ways of looking at things.
It was very traumatic at times but gradually I have been able to think more rationally about my life, and look at where I am now and where I want to be in the future and I feel the depression is lifting.
Overall it has enabled me to get things into perspective and with Paul’s guidance look to the future more positively.
I would encourage anyone with deep rooted issues stemming from loss that has never been resolved to consider this programme.
Paul has been very supportive and empathetic. Allowing me to talk about things at my own pace while keeping me focussed.
I shall always be grateful for the help he has given me.

Bereavement Counselling

I lost my Dad last October. He was my rock. I normally try to deal with this type of stuff myself. While looking on the internet for tips on how to deal with grief, I came across Paul or should I say he found me. He got in touch and explained how it worked and I, for once, decided to give it a go. Wow is all I can say as it was not like any counselling session I had been at before. I felt very relaxed from the beginning and soon was not afraid to open up about how I felt. Paul is very professional, while caring and understanding and non-judgemental at the same time. Hechas given me the tools to deal with my Dad's passing and move on. He has also taught me to see who I really am and I have to say I kinda like the real me. Thank you Paul for everything you have done. More...

I was in a not so good place, battling with my thoughts and emotions. I could not see the wood from the trees, I needed help in dealing with this.

Paul was very patient and provided me with the perfect platform to speak freely and to deal with my emotions in a healthy manner.

With Pauls help I am now in a good place. I feel more equipped and better at dealing with life's challenges. I am more in tune with my emotions and more accepting of things.

This benefited me in so many ways, my social circle is better than its ever been and I generally feel good. I feel like I turned a leaf.

I have no hesitation in recommending Paul to anyone facing life's challenges.

Paul, is a absolute legend! Having a really rough time in my life, after loosing my mum. and I needed help from somebody. And I'm so lucky to have met who I met. First meeting paul, he just gave off a verry comforting feeling. Verry well spoken, verry friendly, just gave me the feeling, that he was one of the lads. loved the fact he just wears normal clothes. Not dressed in a suit. I verry quickly trusted Paul, and told paul exactly why I was there, and what i needed help with. After 8 weeks, i had literally had a massave weight lifted off of my shoulders! We worked through a book together, witch was alot to do with the grief that I was going through. and I managed deal with, and get my life back on track, I would recommend paul to everyone!! Words cant describe how happy my life is now! And that's because of the tools that paul has showed me! Top dude!!! More...

My reason for working with Paul was because I was trying to deal with the grief of my Dad and I was also wanting to work on the other kinds of grief I had in my life but I didn’t have the tools to deal with them. When I first started this program with Paul I found it different from anything else I’ve done before and at sometimes challenging. But when I finished the course with Paul I found it was great relief and I found a new understanding on how to cope with my emotions & anxiety’s.

I believe if you do decide to work with Paul it will help you out a lot as for me he was very helpful & supportive and allowed me to speak my truth with no judgment.

5 July 2023

I came to Paul for some coaching to discuss and find strategies to better existing and previous relationships with family members. My mother had been diagnosed with cancer again and wanted to talk through this with someone and the impact it had on our relationship. I felt Paul would be someone who I could be comfortable with someone I knew would listen well. I found the programme quite liberating and free'ing, allowing myself to let go of some thoughts and emotions. I am feeling lighter now that I have finished the programme and stronger in my mindset and approach to relationships going forward with certain people. I think coaching can benefit anyone whether there is specific areas to be disucssed or not and would recommend using Paul to dig a little deeper and challenge yourself in ways you might not be able to yourself. Thanks Paul. More...

Bereavement Counselling

I reached out to Paul initially, because my whole world seem like it was falling apart, and having encountered mental illness before I knew not to let it get too severe before seeking help!
The first thing Paul said to me was.
“You’re not broken”.
You just need to learn some life skills to help you through challenging times that we all go through, and I will teach you them!!
Those 3 words have rung through my ears on so many occasions and those three words have helped me come to terms with things that are happening around me, my sessions with Paul have been truthfully empowering!!
I think once somebody explains to you, everybody has good and bad days. Everybody loses somebody in their life and everybody has emotional trauma. It kind of brings home that, yeah everybody does! it’s how you’re taught to deal with them that’s made the most impact in life!
There’s not a word in the dictionary that can stand that man up to the level that he deserves!
He’s truly changed my life and my mindset and continues to do so, because he’s only ever at the end of the phone or a text away if I need him!
Not many people in his profession, do that stay with you to the end?
He’s on my phone as Lifesaver, and truthfully he really is!

I got in touch with Paul when I was going through a particularly tough part of my life where I felt I didn’t have the answers to what was coming my way.

Speaking with Paul was my release and it was an space where I could be completely vulnerable. I could just talk and get everything off my chest then come up with positive strategies and goals to help. His calm demeanour and non-judgmental approach was just what I needed.

In short, if you are thinking about coaching, even just a bit then give Paul a shout. You won’t regret it.

Working with Paul was so eye opening. I completed a Grief Recovery course with him over a number of weeks and found it so useful to be able to identify and explore parts of my grief that I had never been able to uncover or put a name to before.

Throughout the course I felt as though a weight was lifting from my chest and felt he was giving me the tools I needed to be able to process my grief and feelings on my own terms.

Paul made me feel very safe in his presence and secure knowing I could be more vulnerable without ever being judged and that I would be supported while doing so.

I would wholeheartedly recommend him to everyone I know and look for ward to working with him in the future.

Q&As

Being a heart with ears to Allow clients the space to feel heard and explore how they can become a better version of themselves.

Watching people heal the wounds in their hearts and turn them into scars

After leaving school at 17 with no A-levels and no real direction, I took some time in life finding what i wanted to do as a profession.

17 years ago, I joined the Ambulance Service as an emergency care assistant and found a real love for supporting people with mental health problems but sadly I felt very poorly equipped with the tools to be able to help.

In 2020, I stumbled across a student coaching course which caught my eye with the slogan, “its easier to make strong children than it is to fix broken adults” that caught my attention. On a personal and professional level this resonated with me.

Since gaining my qualification, I have clocked up over 200 coaching hours with students and young adults on a 1-1 and group basis.

After enrolling in a course to help children with loss in 2019, this led me to train as an Advanced Grief Recovery Specialist, and have successfully helped many clients move through and beyond over 40 different types of loss that we may encounter in life.

Upon working with so many grieving people, I realised this was a passion close to my heart. I have since qualified as an Edu-Therapy Specialist, which allows me to offer a cognitive behavioural process for healing grieving hearts.

My clients choose to work with me based on what they feel is best for them. I only recommend working with me once we have had a chemistry session and the client feels i am the right support to guide them through this part of their journey

I can accommodate working online and have numerous clients who choose to work remotely with me.
