After spending 6 months working full time for a gardener, i now work on a self employed basis and have acquired multiple customers in my village and the bath area cutting hedges and pruning trees.

I was initially impressed with how quickly Jacques got in touch after I looked on Bark, and offered to come the very same day.
Polite and helpful on the phone. I asked for reassurance that he could do the job (cutting down an old rotten tree) before it got dark, and he said he could, so we agreed a price.
From the moment he arrived it was off. I asked him if he could definitely do it with just one person, and he said yes - but then had my partner helping him for the whole job, including carrying the cut-down tree out to his vehicle. It was hours of manual labour. My partner could not possibly have left him to it when cutting the tree down, it would not have been safe. In cutting down the tree, he broke part of our fence, and dented the neighbours fence and broke their washing line. No offer to reduce the price at all to cover the damages.
His “ear defenders” were just headphones that he didn’t actually wear and his tools were really ineffective. Having now seen him work I highly doubt he was properly insured or trained. He openly told my partner this wasn’t the job he wanted to be doing and was just making some quick cash so that he could work in sales. He then this to guilt my partner into paying the full price and was argumentative when my partner pointed out we should pay less due to the damage caused (not to mention the fact he’d had to put in hours of work!)
Clearly very inexperienced and naive. I’m sure he means well, but it made for a very stressful experience which could have been very dangerous.
Avoid at all costs - for this young guy’s safety and your own.

Very poor service. He spent most of his time in his car on his phone. 2hrs late arriving. I cancelled job after 4pm as it was not even half done. Very disappointed.

I wouldn’t use Jacques again. When I discussed the work initially with him over the phone he asked how long I thought the work would take, and I said I thought it would take a day. On this basis he quoted £200 for the work. We agreed he would come Saturday morning. Late Friday morning he asked could he come that afternoon instead. I agreed. He arrived at 1:15 and finished just before 4:00 , but still wanted £200. I told him that as had worked for less than 3 hours and not for a day as had been discussed I was not prepared to give him £200. He gave me a long spiel about how much Bark costs, and how much his equipment costs etc .Eventually we reached a compromise but I still feel overcharged. More...

I feel very sad that I can not leave a positive review, as my experience with Jacques was not a great one. I have been left with a job that has not been completed, a lot of mess to tidy up, cracked plant pots and a precious rose that has been broken.
When I tried to get in touch and air my views I got no response and when I eventually did hear back from Jacques I was told “that perhaps you ought to be realistic and grateful for the generous price for a large apple tree pruned”!
I feel very disappointed that the work I paid for has not been completed. Jacques set the price and told me that he could do the job. I do understand that he underestimated the amount of work there was to do and that communication should have been better on both parts however, there has been no attempt on his part to rectify the matter or even any suggestion of me paying for more hours. He has simply told me that “ I did the main job at hand as agreed, that is all there is to it” and “I’ve fulfilled the agreed work. I won’t be continuing this discussion further”
All in all, very disappointing.

Needed a lot of strimming done. He came in advance to check and quoted 120.00 for 4 hours PLUS Bark Fee 15.00. He said his equipment was expensive - strimmer was £1000. When he came to do 4 hrs the strimmer he used could not get through established weeds. Plus no insurance, no protective clothing or goggles. £30+ per hour is a professional rate. This guy is not a professional. He also added £5 petrol to the bill. More...

Hi Claire sorry you feel that way. I was very honest and upfront with all my terms before, which you didnt have to accept. And I strimmed through almost double the amount of grass i could have done in the time with an ordinary worse quality strimmer. What i charged for the quantity of long grass strimmed I felt was very reasonable. As for protection i wear eye protection and ear defenders which is more than enough protection for strimming, as someone who has been doing this a long time
