How can someone tell if their loft is suitable for conversion?
A loft is generally suitable for conversion if there is sufficient head height (typically around 2.2 m at the highest point), a suitable roof structure, and the ability to install a compliant staircase. Structural alterations, insulation, fire safety, and planning constraints must also be considered, which are usually confirmed through a professional survey.
Run us through the different stages in the loft conversion process - what’s involved?
A loft conversion progresses through structural steel and timber installation, first-fix carpentry, external weatherproofing, insulation, and first-fix electrics and plumbing. This is followed by plasterboarding and plastering, staircase installation, and second-fix electrics and plumbing, resulting in a fully compliant, finished living space ready for use.

With 12 years’ experience in as a Building Control surveyor, I developed a strong understanding of compliance and quality. Opening my own business allowed me to apply that knowledge directly on site, ensuring projects are built right, not just inspected.
