Working with Joanne really helped me during a period of transition. I was in the process of relocating to the UK having lived overseas for 23 years. Joanne’s gentle approach and ability to help me consider things from different angles were invaluable during what could have been an overwhelming time. Thank you! More...

I originally approached Joanne as I was stuck in my thoughts as to how to re-enter the workplace. Joanne's approach in looking to build a life rather than a career, and concentrating on some specific areas of being stuck on the hamster wheel resulted in me losing 2 stone, taking up running and dropping a whole load of roles that didn't bring me energy. And I have now found a 4 day a week role in the Big 4, paying me more than I asked for. More...

Amazing Miriam! Great to hear things have unfolded in such a positive way! Hope the new jobs goes well! Joanne

22 September 2018

Joanne provided several sessions of life coaching when I was going through significant transition. I had voluntarily left secure employment and was finding it difficult to secure new employment in my preferred field. With Joanne's support, I was able to overcome the frustration I was feeling and make sense of the season I was in. Not every one of the resources she offered clicked, but the ones that did clicked very powerfully indeed. I did get the job I was looking for in the end. Whether or not it works out for me is a question for the future and not really the point. Joanne provided resources to help me see the "bigger picture" that will be of lasting benefit beyond the sessions we spent together. More...

Joanne's coaching style is gentle and supportive, and I felt that she really wanted me to succeed. I had a great breakthrough on personal motivation with Joanne, and I'm excited to continue working on the topic we started on. She was willing to work with me to explore a particular avenue I was interested in and it had great results! More...

Q&As

What I love most about my work is seeing people grow in confidence and realise strengths they did not know they had. Whether I am working with a child, parent, or adult, it is rewarding to see someone move from feeling stuck or overwhelmed to feeling more hopeful and in control.

I enjoy helping people understand what is happening beneath the surface and supporting them to take realistic steps forward at their own pace. The most satisfying part of the work is seeing clients cope better, feel calmer, and begin to believe in themselves again.

I started my own business because I wanted the freedom to offer the kind of support I believe really makes a difference. In many settings there is not always enough time or flexibility to work in a way that fully meets people’s emotional needs, especially for children and families.

Creating Action4Families CIC allowed me to build a service focused on relational, therapeutic, and developmentally informed support, where the priority is helping people feel understood, grow in confidence, and make lasting changes in their lives. It has also given me the opportunity to support not just individuals, but families, schools, and organisations who want to create healthier and more supportive environments.

Clients choose to work with me because I offer a thoughtful, professional approach that combines counselling experience with a strong understanding of child development, emotional wellbeing, and family relationships. I work with children, young people, and adults, so I am able to see the bigger picture and understand how individual difficulties often connect with family life, school, or stress in everyday situations.

I aim to provide a calm, supportive space where people feel listened to without judgement, while also helping them make real, practical changes. My work is relational and tailored to each person, rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach, and I focus on helping clients feel more confident, more in control, and better able to cope with whatever they are facing.

Through Action4Families CIC I am also able to offer a wider range of support, including play therapy, counselling, and parent guidance, which means clients can receive the right kind of help at the right time.

Yes, I can provide sessions online as well as in person. Remote counselling is available for adults and young people aged 12+, using secure video sessions. Many clients find online work convenient and effective, especially when travel, work, or school makes in-person appointments difficult.

For younger children, sessions are usually more effective in person, as play-based and creative work often benefits from being in the therapy room, but online parent consultations or parent coaching can still be offered where needed.

Online sessions are held in a confidential, professional setting and arranged at a time that is suitable during the day.

IIs your child struggling with big emotions, worries, anger, or loss? Children often find it hard to explain what they are feeling in words, but they can show it through play. Play therapy provides a safe, supportive space where children can express themselves naturally and work through difficulties with the guidance of a trained therapist who understands child development and emotional wellbeing.

At Action4Families CIC we offer professional play therapy for children who may be experiencing emotional, behavioural, or school-related challenges. Sessions use creative and child-centred approaches such as art, games, sand tray, storytelling, and imaginative play, helping children communicate feelings safely and begin to make sense of experiences that may feel confusing or overwhelming. As trust develops, children often become calmer, more secure, and better able to manage worries, anger, low confidence, friendship difficulties, family changes, or stressful life events.

Every session is shaped around the child and moves at their pace, with the focus on helping them feel understood, supported, and stronger from the inside. When children feel safe enough to express themselves, real change can begin, both emotionally and in their behaviour at home and at school.

Teenagers don’t always say when something is wrong, but changes in mood, behaviour, confidence, or school life can be signs that they are struggling inside. Counselling offers a safe, confidential space where young people aged 12–18 can talk openly, think things through, and make sense of what they are feeling with the support of a trained therapist who understands the pressures of adolescence.

At Action4Families CIC we provide specialist counselling for young people aged 12–18 using a warm, relational, and person-centred approach. Sessions are adapted to the individual and may include talking, creative work, practical activities, or reflective exercises that help teenagers express themselves in a way that feels natural rather than forced. As trust develops, many young people begin to feel calmer, more confident, and more able to cope with anxiety, anger, low mood, friendship problems, family changes, or the stress of school and growing up. The focus is on helping each young person feel understood, respected, and stronger in themselves, so they can move forward with greater confidence and emotional resilience.

There are times in life when things feel too heavy to carry on your own. You may be feeling overwhelmed, stuck, anxious, low in confidence, or struggling with loss, stress, or relationship difficulties. Counselling offers a calm, confidential space where you can speak openly without judgement and begin to make sense of what you are going through.

At Action4Families CIC, counselling is not about being told what to do. It is about being listened to properly, sometimes for the first time in a long while. Through a relational and person-centred approach, we work together to understand what has brought you to this point, what is keeping things stuck, and what might help you move forward with greater clarity and strength.

Sessions are paced around you. Some people need space to talk, others need help understanding patterns, emotions, or reactions that feel out of control. As the work develops, many people notice they feel calmer, more confident, and better able to handle situations that once felt overwhelming.

Appointments are available in Derby in a private, comfortable setting, with daytime sessions offered. Where appropriate, support can also be arranged around work or family commitments.

Action4Families CIC provides professional counselling and wellbeing support for adults, young people, and families, with a focus on emotional health, resilience, and lasting change.

Parenting can be rewarding, but it can also feel exhausting, confusing, and overwhelming at times. When a child is struggling with behaviour, emotions, anxiety, or school difficulties, it is not always clear what the right response should be. Parent coaching offers a supportive space to think things through, understand what may be happening beneath the behaviour, and learn practical ways to respond with greater confidence and calm.

At Action4Families CIC, parent coaching is based on a relational and child-development informed approach. We look at what your child may be feeling, what they may be needing, and how small changes in the way adults respond can make a big difference to behaviour, emotional security, and family relationships. Sessions are thoughtful, respectful, and focused on helping you feel more in control rather than judged or criticised.

Parent coaching can help when children show anger, anxiety, low confidence, school refusal, emotional outbursts, or withdrawal, and it can also be helpful when family life simply feels stuck or stressful. As understanding grows, many parents find they feel calmer, more confident, and better able to handle situations that once felt overwhelming, creating a more settled and positive atmosphere at home.
