Please visit my website for PRICES and to contact me. IMDTB qualified & accredited dog behaviourist, offering dog behavioural consultations and individually tailored puppy & dog training throughout Winchester, Romsey, Southampton and Stockbridge. Featured in the Telegraph. Do you have a new puppy that needs training? Are you struggling to get your dog back in the park? Does your dog find it hard to settle calmly when left alone? Does your dog have interaction or reactivity issues with other dogs or people? Do you have a rescue dog that is anxious or shy? If so, please get in touch, I’d love to help you with a bespoke, reward based training plan Karen Maher IMDTB, Founder I know what it’s like to have a dog who is reactive, frightened on walks and who struggles with confidence - it’s heart-breaking. And helping a dog go from anxious to full of life through a series of bespoke coaching methods is the reason I became a behaviour consultant. I have spent many years studying how to remedy behavioural issues and learnt first-hand with my own Jack Russell, Tiggy. On rehoming her, she would instinctively lunge at other dogs and bark to scare them away, but I soon worked out how to calm her and instil a change in her nature. She eventually became a joy to take on walks and my beloved companion. When she died I was spurred to create a legacy for her by helping other troubled dogs. I left a high-profile career in fashion PR to pursue canine behavioural therapy and helping other people’s dogs gives me so much satisfaction. I also offer one-to-one training, bespoke puppy and adolescent dog training and specialise in recall for Hounds, Labradors, Spaniels and other working breeds. No two dogs are the same and I approach each dog uniquely and with empathy. I extend this mindset to every dog’s owner too, because I understand first-hand how difficult behaviour can impact and the helplessness that can be felt. I stay updated with science-based research, CPD and believe in ethical practices. Now I have five dogs of my own, including Fred, the rescue ‘Hound’ proudly honoured in my company name: Maher & Hound. I am vet recommended I am qualified and accredited as a Dog Behaviourist with the IMDTB and as a positive reinforcement Dog Trainer with the Guild of Dog Trainers I am currently being mentored by Steve Mann, founder of the IMDT and author of ‘Easy Peasy Puppy Squeezy’ and Dave Brice, head of Dog Behaviour at the IMDT. The IMDT represents the cutting edge in reward based training. All IMDT trainers and behaviourists use the most up to date science based dog training techniques that are proven to be effective and have the dog’s welfare at heart. As an Assessed and Qualified IMDTB Member of The Institute of Modern Dog Trainers (www.imdt.uk.com) I am proud to display the UK Dog Behaviour & Training Charter symbol

What do you love most about your job?

I love seeing the results of my training and behaviour work and how happy this makes my clients and their dogs. I love seeing the relationships between my clients and their dogs grow and improve - HAPPY, CALM DOGS - I’m a lifelong lover of dogs, they absolutely fascinate me, they are so intelligent, so endearing, so much fun and they are utterly life-enhancing. I have learned that dogs do live in the moment and that they therefore have an amazing ability to change completely.

What inspired you to start your own business?

Back in 2007 I embarked on a journey with my own dog Tiggy. After having rehomed her, I discovered that she was very frightened on walks, turning to barking and lunging at dogs to scare them away.

I wanted to learn how to help Tiggy, walks were becoming increasingly more difficult, family events with other dogs a stressful event.

So I spent the next 10 years, learning as much as I could, not only to help Tiggy, but also other dogs too. When Tiggy died my heart broke in a way that I thought would never mend, but I went on to adopt 5 more rescue dogs, helping them with with issues including fear of men, fear of noisy traffic, dog to dog reactivity, hyperactivity, fear of unknown places, separation anxiety and high prey drives. (That’s quite a legacy Tiggy!)

I knew there were people out there, who had also been through the heartbreak of their dogs being attacked, aggressive, anxious or possibly rehoming a more challenging dog.

I studied with leading Dog Behaviourists including Ross McCarthy MA FCFBA MBIPDT MGoDT AMBPSCA at The Cambridge Institute of Dog Behaviour and Training (CIDBT) - and Sarah Whitehead, (BA, MSc) and author of the bestselling ‘Clever Dog’ book (Advanced Dog / Dog Aggression), volunteered for various rescue charities and invested much time and money on courses and practical experience, focusing on rescue, reactive and anxious dogs.

This turned into something incredibly powerful and I craved the opportunity to help more dog owners find the same joy on their walks and ways to help their dogs feel happy again.

Where I was once a lonely and isolated dog owner I now was receiving dozens of messages filling my inbox:
“Thank you Karen for making walks pleasurable and relaxing again”

As the messages continued I was fuelled with this new found passion and wanted much more than just a business helping any dog owner, so created a niche just for those who had experienced some of the same issues as myself in particular.

Maher & Hound was born!
