My mother was diagnosed with dementia 3 months ago and Walfinch have been visiting to help her get ready in the morning and also help my father around the house. The carers are all generally very friendly and knowledgeable and the help they have provided has taken so much pressure off us as a family. The office team have been quick to respond to queries and changes to the schedule. I would recommend Walfinch to anyone in a similar situation. More...

If you want to do all the work but pay a hell of a lot of money just for someone to watch over and hand out tablets if they remember to, then this company will be fine for you. I got this company in so I could return home to do some maintenance, when I got back i noticed dad's tablets were being given at the wrong time of the day. I thought they knew better so I left it, but he wasn't ok so I had to prompt them to change back to times I mentioned when booking the company. Second time i went for a break I returned to find dad's pain medication reduced to ibuprofen without consulting the doctor. The carer he didn't like replaced the one he did and I wasn't notified. Took a few emails falling on deff ears and over a couple of weeks to rearrange. By this time dad wasn't happy with having carers that he didn't like and started to become resistant. I was told he'd be assessed every 3 months, he wasn't. I found out of date food in the fridge being fed to him, his bedsheets weren't washed for 3 months. The last time I tried to have a break I had to return after frantic calls from the carers as dad was being difficult. A manager called to view her opinions on how to handle dementia patients with challenging behaviour, even suggest removal of his tablets and starting from scratch which was a terrible idea. Turned out it was a uti, which neighbours mentioned to the carers whilst I was away but the response was that's just the way he's going. When I returned, cutting my break away early , it turned out he didn't have his stronger pain patch on, so poor pain management, he had a uti, so now I understand his agitation and the new carer that was supposed to shadow a regular carer turned up by herself completely green to the situation. Little things like she didn't know how he took his morning tea. I'm glad I came home early but it did not give me enough time to rest. They have an app to make notes on, but the notes aren't checked according to one of the carers there are too many notes to monitor. None of the management noticed he'd gone into hospital with a suspected stroke while I was away, Dad refused care in AandE as he found it an overwhelming experience but there was no follow up doctor visit regarding the matter. I had to make my own weekly spreadsheet to monitor dad's health and prompt medical action. Because of poor advice and the inability to obtain a urine samples, or leaving him unwashed for over a week because he refuses to wash, dad ended up in hospital with borderline sepsis. I temporarily moved him into a nursing home and is doing much better. The carers and nurses are well trained. I now know what level of care he should have been getting. When he comes out, he will a different company looking after him for a lot less than nearly £5000 a week, that are trained to notice infections and not blame the dementia. God knows what would have happened if I wasn't around to watch over him. Don't blame being difficult and refusing treatment on the person with dementia it could be and underlying health problem that could end up critical. If the carers in the nursing home can clock a uti in dad having only known him for a few weeks, you're lot should have done better having known him for under a year. I did complain in January, I recorded the conversation. I emailed about not getting urine samples. I explained my dissatisfaction when asked if I would further care when dad returned from respite. I emailed saying I would be leaving a review. Had I been qualified in dementia care, I would have complained about the advice given through the summer, thank you for highlighting poor communication between management More...

The care my mother receives is second to none. She has dementia & pretty much house bound. She constantly tells me how her carers work very hard looking after her. They text or call me with any problems or concerns which makes us feel reassured as communication is key. My partner has worked in the care sector for 25 years is very happy with the care my mother is being given. More...
