I was looking for a Chartered Structural Engineer to consult on a property I am looking to purchase, and I am very glad I found David from Forma.
His expertise was invaluable in helping me navigate some complex concerns.
He provided a detailed, annotated report that clearly explained issues such as timber roof deflection, cracks, damp, and differential movement in a way that was easy to understand. David was incredibly responsive and accommodating, providing his insights quickly so I could move forward with confidence in a time-sensitive situation.
Beyond the report, he took the time to have a follow-up call to discuss his findings and share his experience with building structures. He gave me incredibly valuable advice on what to look out for regarding specific floor loads — such as the implications of placing a grand piano (200kg+) — which was a level of practical insight I really appreciated.
If you are looking for a highly professional, technically thorough, and responsive structural engineer who provides practical, real-world advice, I cannot recommend David and Forma enough. Excellent service.

What inspired you to start your own business?
Structural Engineering has a reputation of being a solely ''numbers in, beams out'' approach to design work, but we felt that we could offer a more personalised approach which can help guide the client towards their desired outcome.
We have a vast array of experience of working across a broad range of building types and have particular expertise in the residential sector. We wanted to take this experience and offer a custom design service to homeowners, to help them through the various stages of their project.
For many clients, this is their first time undergoing renovation or refurbishment work, and often they have never hired a Structural Engineer before. We want to ensure that their first experience is a positive one.

From first receiving the brief, we explain our thought-process and talk through our ideas before commencing any design or report work.
We retain active communication during our work stage, and welcome feedback and discussion. This ensures that our final structural package meets the client's expectations whilst also achieving compliance with Building Regulations.
Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.
For design work, generally, we would prefer to visit the property in-person to determine the configuration of the existing building before commencing design. However, if the client is happy to send us photographs of the building and the area in question, we can also offer our services remotely.
For inspection work, it is essential that we visit the property in-person.
Structural Inspections
We offer different levels of structural inspections depending on your needs and budget.
Generally, this will involve a site visit to your property, where we undertake a visual inspection and record relevant details relating to the structural issues or concerns you may have.
During this visit we will offer our opinion on our immediate observations, to give you a guide on what we believe the cause and potential solutions may be.
Following this, we will report our findings and give guidance on the next-steps to take. Depending on your requirements and/or budget, we can offer a simplified (email summary) report, or a formal, written report.
All surveys will be undertaken by a Chartered Structural Engineer.
Loadbearing Wall Removal
If you are looking to modify the layout of your property, usually to create an open-plan space, then it is likely you will need to remove a loadbearing wall.
We provide drawings and structural calculations suitable for a Building Control submission to facilitate loadbearing wall removal.
All calculations will be undertaken by a Chartered Structural Engineer.
Outbuildings
Outbuildings are a great way to add additional living space to your property without impacting your main house. New buildings should always have structural calculations to ensure that they are designed to resist any unwanted movements, which could cause damage over time. This includes foundation design, structural walls, floors and roofs.
We provide drawings and structural calculations suitable for a Building Control submission. All calculations will be undertaken by a Chartered Structural Engineer.
Chimney Breast Removal
If you are looking to create more space in your property by removing chimney breasts on the ground or first floor, then you will likely need to resupport the chimneys up in the loft level using steel beams.
We provide drawings and structural calculations suitable for a Building Control submission to facilitate chimney removal.
All calculations will be undertaken by a Chartered Structural Engineer.
