There is a lot, but if I had to put it in a list (I do love me some lists), it would be:
1. Helping people overcome the blocks that have been holding them back, for years and sometimes decades, that then opens up the flood gates of their potential. This can be anything from overcoming anxiety or eating healthier on a consistent basis. No matter what it is for the person, it had been a block for them.
2. Helping people build the skills and see what they're capable of doing - from starting a busienss, to allowing their creative side the time and space to roam free. It's like they've given themselves permission to dream again, and seeing that spark of curiosity and play come alive within them is amazing.
3. Hearing how, transforming themselves within the containers of the Coaching Calls, expands and transforms their lives "in the real world." This allows them to take actions they didn't think were possible, to improve their relationships, to have hope, to organize and move with purpose in their lives.
4. To know that although at the beginning, they needed to trust me, it is in being able to see their increased Trust and Confidence within themselves.
5. Seeing how it transforms their relationships and what they think they're capable of, when it comes to their relationships, to their career, and to their health. Nothing is better than knowing they can now have more confidence and do what they had intended to do.
There are many reasons I love my job - these are the top ones that come to mind.
I've always been interested in knowing how and why people do the things they do...and more importantly, how do they change.
This curiosity started with my personal life and why my stepfather was an alcoholic and why my mom stayed with him, but then with myself and all the 'bad lessons' I was taught and had to move past.
For years, I ran coaching programs for groups of people, looking to change their habits. Many, many of those programs deal with very logical things - how to set up your environment, the skills you need to be able to stay on track, what spurs the habit, and how to change it. All essential things to know.
The problem with that, is that humans don't act on logic. If we did, no one would have credit card debt (if they didn't need it), we wouldn't have wars, we would prioritize our health as opposed to putting it on the back burner, amongst so many other examples.
Instead, we act on emotion and then only explain it with logic, after the fact. Too often, change methods try to change that logic with reasoning. Trying to add logic, to our logic, hoping it will change our actions.
But change doesn't work that way. Working with people for decades in a 1-on-1 setting, change works in the opposite direction - by changing how you emotionally feel about a thing.
And I'm not talking simple Emotional Regulation techniques or Increased Motivation or Willpower or Self-Discipline, although these are always needed because our brains and body love 'efficiency' (aka, to be as lazy as possible). Instead, what I'm talking about are the Implicit Associations, the 'Automatic Connections' that your Mind and Body make that cause your emotions, that spur you to act.
If you can change those...then, then you can how you act, without needing years of trying to figure out 'why you did something.' You will learn why - directly. In that way, you have the powerful ways to change, in an easier way, that allows you to have less internal struggles, and leads to a more permanent change.
This is why I started my business - to be able to help people make these changes in the most efficient AND effective ways possible. In doing so, people get to transform their bodies, their minds, their relationships, their belief in themselves, and their lives.
For our First Coaching Session, I offer two options:
1. We Set up a call and if after, our initial 2-hour Coaching Session, you feel like it wasn't worth your time, you get to pay nothing. It is a pay what you want/can, that you will get emailed to you after the call, so it can be absolutely free, if you're not satisfied. I respect your time and stand by my work. Beyond that, over the years, I've worked and gained knowledge of a wide number of theories and practices that have included everything from Breathwork, to EFT tapping, to Somatic work, to Core Transformation, to Changing Your Belief System, to Inside-Out Methods, to NLP, to Integrative Hypnosis Practices. These are the 'non-standard' practices that are sometimes 'looked down upon' by the establishment, despite the fact that there is a ton of research showing how effective these things can be.
Beyond that, I also have a ton of training in the 'Standard' Practices. I have a degree in Psychology and have taken continuing education classes for practicing psychotherapists, in theories related to ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) that has a few benefits, but is focused on Values and Value-Based Actions, CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) about how to shift your thinking to what is logical, DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) that works with being able to Pause and practice different ways of being, knowing that two things can seem contradictory but both can be true at the same time, SDT (Self-Determination Theory) and the 5 different levels of Motivation, Solution Focused Brief Therapy dealing with the 'Magic Question,' and how that has the ability to focus on what you want and what works, as opposed to what doesn't work. IFS (Internal Family Systems) that deals with Parts work and the multiplicity of our inner world, and how to allow for all the parts to be present and to be heard, Schema Therapy that deals with Parts, Schemas, and Modes, to Emotionally Focused Therapy that deals with attachments and being able to improve relationships by becoming more securely attached, to Non-Violent Communication (NVC) that deals with the 4 steps of the Situation without judgement, your Feelings linked to your Needs, and making a Positive Action Request, amongst others.
This doesn't count all the other stuff from Habit formation, Mindsets, Beliefs, Reconditionings, Reframing, and the like that is present in a number of these modalities.
Beyond these theories, are also the straight up studying of people who are the outliers - What do the David Goggins of the world have in common with the Buddha? Two vastly different people and situations and what works and what doesn't work for each. For both, they are willing to go to the extreme, forsaking what other people say for a belief they have in themselves.
I bring all of this to the table with each client.
Overall, if you were to think of coaches on a continuum, there would be 3 overall phases:
Phase 1 is to know how to do the exercises and implement the tools, in very specific situations.
Oh, you're anxious - use this technique to help you calm your anxious thoughts in the moment. It's effective, but limited. Still, it's effective and better than nothing.
Phase 2 is to know how to combine the Tools and Techniques, and when to use them. For example, if someone comes in with anxiety, to not only show them how to use the tool when they're anxious, but also how to get to the root of it so you can help relieve the anxiety over the long-run.
Phase 3 is to know the uniqueness and individual present, along with all the Tools and Techniques. This is where the most advanced coaches go and know what to do. This is knowing the difference of when to push and when to pull back and more importantly, why.
To keep with the example of anxiety, you can help the person with the technique for when it shows up, and even help to relieve it over a longer-term basis, but also potentially realize that their anxiety is more directly related to their inability to trust others. Where you recognize that unless you work on that, especially if something just came up in their life that spurred a distrust from someone they care about, you might be spinning your wheels and not actually making as much progress as you could.
It's all, at best, an educated guess, but that depends on the coach, their skill level, and the trust you two have with one another.
At this point, I have a wide-breadth of the first. I know a ton of Tools, Techniques, and Exercises to help people out. I've been using these, to some degree for the past 20+ years, working with people 1-on-1 for decades, seeing what does and doesn't work.
Beyond the breadth, there is the depth, of how to deal with a slew of individual issues a person may face and get to the root of it. That last factor of trust, comes with working one-on-one together, to help guide you to where you didn't think was possible.
Again, for our First Coaching Session, if after, our initial 2-hour Coaching Session, you feel like it wasn't worth your time, you have the option pay nothing (it is a pay what you want/can). There is no risk in trying out a call.
