I am a counselor in the Philadelphia area and I specialize in anxiety in it's many forms. Anxiety is our least-welcome companion. It holds us back when we try to take a step forward. It stands in the way when we try to connect with others. It convinces us that the world is scary and the safest place is our home. Anxiety wears many masks, but the best defense is learning how to identify it when it pops into our lives and combat it with a variety of techniques you will learn in therapy.

Right when I walk through the doors at Dbt of south jersey It feels very comfortable and safe it makes me feel a sort of hope that things are going to be ok, and that’s a rare feeling to have anywhere else. Everyone from the person who is sitting at the front desk to the different therapist I’ve met or talked to at DBT of south jersey are very kind and want to help. I always say that DBT saved my life- and it has multiple times. When studying DBT you gain skills in all areas of life that will help you to get through anything life throws your way. The more you practice those skills the more automatic they become to you when faced with a crisis. They become second nature to where something will happen and you will know what set of skills you need for that situation. Also a big part of DBT therapy is phone coaching. Once you have tried a lot of skills but your still experiencing strong emotions you can reach out to one of the therapists and they will walk you through other skills to help you manage the tough emotions you are going through. There’s DBT groups that usually hold I think 7-10 people where you study DBT and learn all the skills from each of the four modules together as a group and then go home to work on homework you will bring back to share with the group. I feel so blessed to have been a part of that. I got so much out of it that has changed my life. There’s also Dbt individual therapy where you meet with an individual therapist with the help of a diary card and behavior chains and you get a chance to talk through things that are going on in your life and start to process them in a safe nonjudgmental environment. You gain more skills and how to apply them to the specific situations you deal with in your day to day life. Also down the line you start to do trauma work to start to process the trauma and the symptoms that go along with it, to help to try to move forward from it skillfully. But lastly I want to talk about my therapist and the owner of DBT OF SOUTH JERSEY- Shaelene! I’ve been seeing Shaelene for over three years now and in my opinion she is extremely caring and she will do anything she can to help her clients to get better and replace old ways of coping to new and more effective ways. Most times it feels like she’s the only one in my corner- but she will always be there as my biggest cheerleader! She has always believed in me and had hope for me even in the times I don’t have it in myself. I don’t know how I would have gotten through all that I have, without her. She’s always supporting me and pushing me to use my DBT skills to help me through the tough stuff. She has tough me so much and always pushes me to do better. I’ll never forget when she first became my therapist and I was overwhelmed and didn’t think I could do it and she said “you don’t have to be here, no one is forcing you. But if your going to stay you might as well work hard to get everything you possibly can out of this” that was just the kick I needed to jump head first into my recovery and work hard at it everyday. I’m so grateful to have Shaelene in my life to teach me and help me see the light at the end of the tunnel. She truly goes above and beyond for her clients!I believe wholeheartedly in DBT and feel everyone should be taught these skills regardless of what your life circumstances are, and I think DBT OF SOUTH JERSEY is the perfect place to do that because these therapists will never stop fighting for you to succeed. I mean why wouldn’t you want to jump into something that will make your life feel like it’s worth living?!

Our practice offers counseling, psychotherapy, and psychiatry. We have numerous therapists whom offer a variety of treatments of an individual, couples, family, and group nature. We want your experience to be qualitatively better than those at practices you might have received services from in the past, starting with your first contact to our office staff. We take the time to gather information unique to your situation prior to attempting to match you with a competent therapist, and begin forming a trusting relationship from the gate. Our practice is highly cohesive and consists of therapists that respect one another personally and professionally, engaging in ongoing contact and supervision to ensure that you receive as high a quality treatment as possible. We look forward to being able to assist you in achieving your objectives. Sincerely, J Snyder Therapeutic Services
Being able to sit in stilled time while attempting to engage in a genuine experience with other individuals is what appeals to me most. I feel that people subconsciously hold conversations that are inauthentic and loaded with defenses, masking their true feelings, impulses, thoughts, and fantasies. I prefer to develop a trusting relationship with others where they feel comfortable discussing such material, rather than generating insultingly simple interventions that fail to honor the uniqueness and complexity of the patient.
I wanted to run a practice based on integrity, transparency, an internal positive energy, and quality. I wanted to be aware of all the happenings at the practice to ensure that the values and founding principles were upheld. I saw many practices that based the quality of the clinician on the number of patients they saw in a given day, rather than looking at the methodologies employed and the reasons underlying the success of the treatment.
We are a co-owned practice by individuals that intrinsically believe in the process of psychotherapy and the integrative potential of sitting for a quality treatment. We take every measure to make your experience positive, from your initial phone call, to the service dogs we have integrated with the practice (you don't need to be around them if you do not want to), to our relaxing office environment.
How much does Counselling cost?
Your expert Counsellor will be able to advise you on the full range of services available and will be able to advise on what is most suitable. Use Bark to get free quotes and schedule an appointment today.
What should I expect from my Counselling session?
At your appointment, you will be encouraged to talk about your feelings and emotions with a trained Counsellor who will listen and support you without judging or criticising.
The therapist can help you gain a better understanding of your feelings and thought processes and find your own solutions to problems. However, they will not usually give advice or tell you what to do. The Counsellor might sum up what they understand you have been saying so that they can help you to form a plan of action.
Counselling can take place in a number of ways. These include:
Face to face session
Group session
Phone session
Email session
Online through live chat services or video conferencing software
You may be offered a single session of Counselling, a short course of sessions over a few weeks or months or a longer course that lasts for several months or years.
It can take a number of sessions before you start to see progress but you should gradually start to feel better with the help and support of your Counsellor.
You can be confident that any of the Bark local Counsellors listed will give you a reliable and efficient service to help you feel better.
What should I look for when booking a Counselling session?
You could look for Counsellors that are accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA) which means that they have met the PSA’s required professional standards to practise.
Before you choose a Counsellor, you could read testimonials and read details of the issues they can help with on their website.
You could also look at their profile page on Bark and check out reviews from past customers too.
What issues can a Counsellor help with?
Counselling can help with many issues. These include the following:
Mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety or eating disorders.
Physical health conditions such as infertility.
Difficult life events such as a bereavement, a relationship breakdown or work-related stress.
Dealing with difficult emotions such as low self-esteem or anger.
Sexual identity issues.
Divorce.
Redundancy and work issues.
Phobias and fears.
Can I get a Counselling Service online?
Absolutely! Many Counsellors provide their services remotely via an online video call or the telephone. Not only is it more convenient, but it's also the preferable option for many people who would feel more comfortable holding the session from the comfort of their own home.
