For our wedding, we chose DJ Godfrey of Imani International, and our experience was nothing short of perfect. Godfrey made our reception the perfect celebration by curating a playlist of past and present music that kept everyone on the dance floor the entire night, including some of our older relatives who haven’t danced like that in decades. If the venue had allowed it, I think everyone could have easily danced another few hours.
Throughout the entire evening, we had guests coming up to tell us how awesome the music was, how much fun they were having, and how our wedding reception was the best they had ever been to. A week later, many were telling us that they were still recovering. Some even asked when we were planning on doing it again 😂.

I hired DJ Damian for my 40th birthday party. He was phenomenal. So professional and friendly. Set the vibe perfectly. I had a really good idea of the music I wanted and consulted with him. He played the songs I wanted and riffed to fill out the evening with songs that fit the vibe (2000s, 2010s hip hop, top 40, club hits) with a few outliers in between. A packed dance floor is the ultimate sign of an amazing party—and an empty one is a huge mood-killer. The best advice I always give to my perspective clients is to allow your guests to make song requests before the actual event. This way they have some personal interest in the music and you can have the final say before your big day.
In my own experience, I’ve witnessed that breaks in the dancing can crush any momentum. Uncle Bob is doing the worm across the dance floor, but wait, we now need to cut the cake or play a slideshow. And if you really want to keep your guests dancing, you may want to skip traditions like the bouquet and garter tosses—which tend to clear the floor quickly.
The biggest reason why you lose people on the dance floor is that the couple just isn’t there.People pay attention to where the couple is and what they’re doing. So my big suggestion is to always take your wedding portraits before the reception, and greet and mingle with guests during cocktail hour and dinner, so you aren’t taken away from the dance floor for too long. If the bride and groom are on the dance floor having fun everyone will be as well.
