Vocal Musician

Elisabeth Lohninger is a professional vocalist, songwriter and voice teacher based in New York City. She has recorded thirteen albums so far and is a faculty member at the New School For Jazz And Contemporary Music. Vocal Musician is a platform offering online stand-alone courses and private lessons (on Zoom and in person in New York, Germany and Austria). Services offered in private lessons include: Voice technique, repertoire building for the contemporary vocalist, song phrasing and interpretation, jazz repertoire, music theory, ear training, songwriting, and piano accompaniment for vocalists, and more! Recommendations: 'There are Oscars for cinema. If there were any for musical pedagogy, I would give it to you without hesitation!' - Christian Gedin, France 'My teacher Elisabeth is so fantastic. She makes me laugh, which makes our lessons more fun and interesting. She is so amazing that I have to say she is the best singing teacher I have had so far. She explains vocal warm-ups and exercises that I didn't even know existed before I saw her. My singing voice is remarkable because of my teacher.' Zara K., California (14 years old) 'I am a professional opera singer and have been performing for the past 20 years in Europe and especially Germany. I've always been fascinated by jazz and wanted to explore this genre of music with all of its intricacies. I was especially interested in working on improvisation, but also very hesitant because of my lack of experience. Elisabeth gave me some very useful suggestions and exercises I was able to instantly put into practice. Knowing that I am a professional opera singer, she was very careful not to try and get me to completely change my sound, but with some minor adjustments was able to help me achieve a bit more of the vocal quality expected in jazz and pop music. She has my highest recommendation as a vocal teacher.' Christina Clark, Opera Singer 'There is nothing more difficult than singing with a cold, especially the kind of virus that attacks the voice box. In an hourlong session Elisabeth Lohninger gave me some amazingly helpful vocal exercises that took my voice from having about 1 octave range left from a horrible cold, to being able to perform a concert with no one knowing I was battling a cold. I have since recommended her to singer friends who have had the same result. She's a vocalist's treasure!!' Audrey Martells, vocalist, songwriter, actor 'Elisabeth Lohninger is a life saver, a voice and tone locator and a soul opener. I love her approach and her attention to a vocalist's individual strengths and vulnerabilities.' Morley Shanti-Kamen, singer-songwriter, educator

What do you love most about your job?

Every voice is different. I love listening closely to figure out how to best help the person I am working with. As a lifelong student I continue to evolve and to learn, through ongoing study, through performance, through generally being an active vocalist and musician. Passing on what I have learned and seeing that have an impact on somebody else's voice is deeply rewarding.

What inspired you to start your own business?

Seeing a need, especially in voice technique but also in areas of music education. Solid vocal technique and ultimately vocal freedom are essential for personal expression and a way of singing that is both satisfying to oneself and inspiring to others. When we are vocally free, we can dig deep into the lyric, melody and meaning of a song. When we have the musical knowledge to back up our vocal abilities then I think we are truly unstoppable.

Why should our clients choose you?

I know that I can help them reach their goals. Specifically if you are interested in contemporary singing, as somebody with 30 years experience working with singers of many ages and backgrounds, I have a deep toolkit to draw from and a wide palate of musical taste.

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

I teach mostly online via Zoom but am available for lessons in person in midtown New York City upon request. I also spend time in Germany and Austria and can, on occasion, meet in person there.

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

I have moved my studio predominantly online. I also run an air purifier during in-person lessons.
