A space that reflects you

When you hire a professional interior designer, you gain access to expert design skills, knowledge and ideas. It’s the job of an interior designer to work closely with you to understand the look you’re after. They’ll consider your own personality and style to ensure that the finished space is in line with your vision. This is your home and it needs to be unique to you.

From colour schemes and layout, to furnishings and accessories – a residential interior designer will have all bases covered. Your designer will help you to create a space that reflects the setting of your property and the people living in it.

A network of professionals

Another big plus that comes with hiring professional help is the network of professionals and resources they have available. This can help with lead times and also with cost. Your interior designer will be able to provide you with high quality recommendations to make your vision a reality.

A job for the experts

With your budget set in place and a rough idea of the look that you’re after, an interior design project is an exciting prospect. But often the choice at your fingertips can be daunting, leaving you not knowing where to start. How many tones of grey are there and which should you use for the kitchen? Does it matter if you choose marble effect or real marble for your table tops?

An interior design professional will be able to recommend the best options for you. If it’s your own home then personal taste will be important. But if it’s a buy-to-let property, then the latest trends may be more relevant.

What is a residential interior designer?

Residential interior designers are responsible for the layout, design, and decoration of residential building spaces. They manage interior design projects in private homes or investment property from portfolios. Most interior designers will hold a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Interior Design. Although a degree is usually required, there are also courses in drawing and computer-aided design (CAD).

Why should clients choose you?

As a small residential design company, we’re able to be flexible and arrange meetings for almost any time. With three full-time members of staff and one part-time administrator, I make sure all projects are handled efficiently and professionally with a personal touch. We only take on work within our man-power. Plus, we all operate on flexible working hours to ensure that this is possible, with no compromise on quality of work. Nothing brings us more job satisfaction than when clients return to us or refer new clients to us.

Are there any additional services you can offer?

I offer project management services to run alongside and in the lead up to an interior design project. For example, project managing a kitchen extension before work on the decoration and interiors has begun. This is subject to availability and how busy we are, but it’s always great to be involved in a project from the very beginning. This can bring really exceptional results. It’s also helpful for clients who have busy jobs. Having one go-to person for all project queries helps to ensure efficiency, consistency and focus, so that nothing is missed.

I hired this company to fully furnish my home, and I couldn’t be more satisfied with the results. They were fast, efficient, and incredibly professional throughout the entire process. Everything was delivered and set up perfectly, and my home was ready to use right away. I experienced no issues at all, and I would definitely use their services again in the future. Highly recommended!

Working with WVI to redo my living room in my apartment has been one of my best decisions this year! Admittedly I am not great with interior design and my living room was a mix of things I’ve collected over the years. WVI was able to create a look that makes my apartment feel like home and now I look forward to inviting people over. They were also incredible to work with. We spoke regularly during the whole process and allowed me to make as many changes as needed throughout and showed me many different renderings of what it would look like when it was completed. They listened to all of my input so that they were truly creating something specific for me. I am already looking forward to working with them again on my bedroom!

Firstly, it is important to have an idea of what you like and don’t like. This is a really useful starting point for what styles will work for you which will be used by the Interior Designer to formulate some suitable concepts.

There are a number of ways which will help you decide your favourite styles such as:

  • Magazines – It is a good idea to browse through interior design magazines such as Architectural Digest, House Beautiful, Galerie Magazine and Veranda.

  • Social media – Have a look at their social media platforms such as Instagram and Pinterest which will give you a good idea of their style and moreover will showcase their portfolios.

  • Local media – Take a look at their websites and see if you can find any local press coverage on any projects they have undertaken.

  • Visits – Try and visit art galleries, antique shops or fashion boutiques to get a sense of what styles you like.

Personality fit - You want to make sure there is a good personality fit with your Interior Designer. Projects can go on for months or even years.

Client involvement - Some designers prefer consulting with a client every step of the process whereas others prefer full creative control so you want to know ahead of time what to expect. As a client, you should know how you like to work and how much involvement you expect from the start.

Inspiration - If you ask questions about their favourite projects you can get a peek into how he or she navigates the creative process.

Communication - Ask detailed questions about the firm’s strengths and weaknesses which will help you determine whether or not it is the right match for your project and timeline.

Project management style - Be sure to ask your designer how they will communicate their vision in a way that you can easily digest. Some Interior Designers manage the entire process from the design phase, through the procurement phase and the final installation. Every designer handles project management differently so it is important to have a firm and clear grasp of how your designer’s process works.

Design risks – Sometimes the initial design presentation may not be what you are looking for. The key is to be open-minded, prepare yourself for some design risks and be honest with how you are feeling. The designs should speak to you as you will have to live with them.

Past clients - It is a good idea to ask about previous projects to understand how crises are dealt with and how the designer has factored in preventative measures.

Budget - It is important to talk about budgets beforehand rather than in the middle of a project which can make a world of difference in terms of avoiding unnecessary conflict. It is worth getting a few quotations from different Interior Designers before deciding on a specific style.

You should look for a degree, foundation degree or HND in relevant subjects such as architecture, fine art, furniture design, interior and spatial design, interior architecture, textile design and 3D design.

Before you choose an Interior Designer, you could ask to see examples of their work, read testimonials and view before and after pictures of rooms and homes they have designed.

You could also look at their profile page on Bark and check out reviews from past customers too as well as examples of work that they have completed. This might also help you get some ideas for the types of design you need.

Interior designers cover a number of different aspects. They prepare detailed plans for the space showing the colour scheme, materials, lighting and soft furnishings they recommend. They also provide clients with detailed drawings, mood boards and scale models if required. Some designers will create interactive digital presentations to show you their designs. They will also show you samples of the materials that they recommend for your home.

Yes, you can. An online interior designer will ask you questions about your budget and preferences, and then they will design a 'virtual' room, filling it with real furniture you can purchase - pretty neat stuff!
