Lynn the Tutor, that’s me, has over 30 years of experience in writing, editing, layout, public speaking, tutoring, and coaching others. I know the English language and I can help you! I provide custom tutoring tailored to you. I don’t teach a prepared curriculum, but focus instead on just those bits that you need to know next. My lessons are personalized; your learning style guides me. And I am honest; if you write a truly terrible sentence, I will call it. Therefore, when I praise you for grasping and applying a concept swiftly, you will know that I mean it. With hundreds of effective public speaking engagements in my past, I can help you win the oratory trophy, gain votes in an election, prepare for interviews, or star at board meetings. I can guide you to the skill level required for your job, school, or any life situation. I work with elementary, grammar, high school, college, and Ph.D. students as well as adults not in school at all.. I’ve worked with a dad who skipped high school and wanted to speak better for his soon-to- be-born son, and with a young man who suddenly realized that he couldn’t get a girl because everyone texts these days, and his English wasn’t good enough. I love my students, and I love to see the ah-ha moments as they comprehend a tricky passage in reading, as they use my two basic spelling rules to have their spelling improve magically about 80%, and as the tortured and illogical passage they have been trying to write yields to some basic rules of grammar. I love when they start reporting that they have been promoted to Honors English at school because of my tutoring, and when my PhD students get a pass on the next part of their dissertation, and when my beginning readers become confident to read out loud in school.
A good friend insisted for three years that I needed to be an English Tutor. I insisted no one would hire me because I don’t have a college degree. One Wednesday she had me meet her at a library and showed me how to use Zoom and an app she had found to promote my business. She wrote a profile for me and and we published it. That Friday the company I was working for eliminated my position and let about 60 people go. My immediate boss tried to retain me by offering an alternate job that would pay the same, but I felt the timing was a message from God. I had been given two weeks notice and by the end of that time I had my first student and was an English tutor.
I seem to be gifted with an ability to keep children engaged in their lessons. Some of them complain that the hour could not possibly be over yet. Parents marvel at this. My adult students appreciate the shortcuts I have devised for learning vocabulary quickly, my gentle assistance with their pronunciation, and my ability to help with their writing, whether it be a novel, a dissertation, or a presentation for a staff meeting.
I work only online using Zoom. Fortunately I was already doing this job that way before the pandemic, so I was able to continue my work.
Since I have no physical contact with my dustomers, this has not been an issue.
