Gardening

Everyone dreams of having a luscious lawn which is the envy of the neighborhood. But do you know how to achieve that dream lawn? In this article, we’ll share our top lawn care tips, giving you a garden that you’ll be proud to show off.

1. Mow your lawn

If you’re looking to achieve that luscious lawn that we all talk about, you’ll need to mow it regularly. This is the most essential of all lawn care tips. Aim to mow your lawn once a week during the spring and summer, and once a fortnight during the fall and in warm winters.

You might be tempted to cut your grass as short as possible so that you don’t have to cut it so often. Resist the temptation! If you cut your grass too short, it will just grow faster in an attempt to repair itself.

Try to avoid cutting more than a third of the length of your grass at once. If your grass is long, you may have to cut it a few times before it reaches the desired length. However, there are some benefits to longer grass: it helps to provide shade to the roots, holding water in the soil for longer, whilst also being more resistant to weeds.

2. Water your lawn

Most people are used to watering their plants, but did you know that you should also be watering your lawn?

During the summer months, your lawn can become dehydrated, causing the health of your grass to deteriorate. If it hasn’t rained for a few days, it’s probably a good idea to give your lawn some water. However, it’s important to consider what time of day you water your lawn.

If you water your lawn in the evening, it’s likely to retain the moisture overnight. This can allow bacteria and disease to breed. If you water your lawn in the middle of the day, the water is likely to evaporate before it can be absorbed.

The best time of day to water your lawn is in the early morning, as soon as you wake up. This will give your grass enough time to absorb the water before the heat evaporates the leftovers and dries out the ground.

Lawn care tip: A common mistake that people make is overwatering their lawn. If you're not sure whether you've overwatered your lawn, a tell-tale sign is if your grass squishes a few hours after watering, or if it's turned a yellowish color. If your lawn is overwatered then don't despair! You can fix it using a method calling aerating, which means adding small holes into the soil to allow air, water, and nutrients to reach the roots.

3. Weed your lawn

Weeds can spread quickly through your lawn so it’s important to regularly remove them. Dandelions and plantains have wide, flat leaves which will shade your lawn and affect its growth whilst weeds such as clover and buttercups can quickly take over.

4. Feed your lawn

While it's not the most glamorous of lawn care tips, tending to weeds regularly is essential for maintaining a healthy garden. Weeds spread quickly when the health of your grass is poor, so keeping your lawn in the best health will help to prevent weeds from growing. You can help to keep your lawn in the best possible health by regularly feeding it with a good quality lawn feed, or by applying a lawn treatment.

It’s best to apply lawn feed when rain is forecast so that the fertilizer will spread down to the roots. If it doesn’t rain, you’ll need to water it into the grass.

5. Hire a Gardener

The most effective way to achieve a luscious lawn is to hire a local gardener – after all, they’re the experts. Most gardeners will offer a lawn mowing service, as well as a lawn treatment service. With years of gardening experience under their belt, they'll know every lawn care tip under the sun. A gardener will weed and feed your lawn, leaving it looking fantastic in no time at all.
