Does insurance cover nutritionist visits in California?

Most major insurance plans cover registered dietitian visits for medical conditions. In California, common providers like Blue Cross Blue Shield, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Cigna, and Humana typically include nutrition counseling as a covered benefit.

What you need for coverage:

  • A referral from your doctor (required by most plans)

  • A diagnosis code for a covered condition (diabetes, obesity with BMI >30, eating disorders, kidney disease, pregnancy-related nutrition, GI disorders, cardiovascular disease)

  • Appointments with a Registered Dietitian (RD/RDN), not just a 'nutritionist'

  • Some plans require in-network providers

Typical coverage:

  • 3-6 visits per year for most conditions

  • Up to 10 visits per year for diabetes

  • Unlimited visits for eating disorder treatment (with prior authorization)

  • Prenatal nutrition often covered as preventive care

Check with your insurance provider or ask your nutritionist's office to verify your specific coverage. Many dietitians will check benefits before your first appointment.

Is a nutritionist worth the cost?

In a busy area like Petaluma, the biggest benefit is personalized, medical-grade advice. You aren't just paying for meal plans—you're paying for a professional who understands your health conditions, reads your lab work, and creates strategies that work with your real life, not against it.

What credentials and qualifications should I look for?

A qualified nutrition professional should be a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN). These credentials require a bachelor's degree (minimum), supervised practice hours, passing a national exam, and ongoing continuing education. Look for additional certifications like CEDRD (eating disorders), CSSD (sports nutrition), CDE/CDCES (diabetes), or CSP (pediatrics) based on your needs. In California, verify state licensing requirements as well.

How to find an affordable nutritionist in Petaluma

To keep costs down, check your insurance first—many plans now cover registered dietitian visits for conditions like diabetes, obesity, eating disorders, and kidney disease. If your plan doesn't cover nutrition counseling, ask about sliding scale fees, payment plans, or group nutrition classes. Virtual appointments are often more affordable than in-person sessions.

‘20 Certificate of Excellence

Welcome to Food For Health Now! I am offering 20% off my regular price. My goal is to work with you to determine which nutritional path is best for you based on a comprehensive health evaluation. I can offer you effective easy to follow plan, using the most up-to-date nutritional information. As a Certified Nutritionist I have over 20 years of experience in weight management and digestive disorders and the common link between the two. I offer programs that rid your body of bloating, unhealthy belly fat, stagnation and inflammation which can lead to weight loss resistance, auto immune disease, skin conditions, allergies, fatty liver, chronic fatigue, brain fog, anxiety, depression and ADHD. It has been my experience that addressing these issues gives you more energy - physically, mentally and emotionally. This increases your metabolism naturally so weight loss is not about a restrictive diet but a sustainable lifestyle change without feeling deprived. My initial session is a health evaluation to understand and determine the root cause of your symptoms so we can address them in your nutritional program. Lab testing is available. Follow up sessions apply the evaluation findings with the perfect program for you, allowing you to understand what foods you may need to avoid and include in each meal. Together we will make up a menu plan specific to your nutritional needs, including your lifestyle and food preferences. Dietary changes have to make sense to you for you to follow it successfully! I offer supportive guidance through these lifestyle changes, making the transition gentle and informative, gradual or not, depending on you. Supplement recommendations are offered as well as lifestyle and exercise suggestions. Please call and we can discuss what you are looking for and I can answer any questions about my services. I charge reasonable rates per session or if you buy a series there is a discount. I look forward to serving you in health, Laurie Campion Certified Nutritionist foodforhealthnow.com (707) •••-••••

How important is a healthy diet to someone’s health and wellbeing?

Diet pays a crucial role in your health and well being. It makes all the difference in how you feel, how much energy you have and how well you are able to function in life. In an age where stress is a common issue, we need to find out how to best support our heath so that it doesn't make us sick. This can be done easily with the proper diet. Which, by the way, doesn't mean abstaining from enjoying what you eat. Healthy eating can be delicious and satisfying and easy to prepare. It can make all the difference in life longevity, disease prevention and staying fit and active through out your life!

What do you love most about your job?

What I love most about offering nutritional counseling are the results I see in those who follow my suggestions. People come in with chronic conditions they have been dealing with for years with no answers from their doctors. It can be a simple discovery of what is at the bottom of a person's symptoms and by addressing the cause, I see people get better fast. It's very rewarding and keeps me inspired.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I had my own health issues that were taken care of through diet and supplements. I was so impressed with the results that I went to school and studied nutrition and got certified in Nutrition Counseling.

Why should our clients choose you?

With my 20 years experience, I keep learning more attending classes and webinars to keep me updated on all the wonderful new information coming out in Functional Medicine. I apply what I keep learning to my nutrition programs, making it easy for my clients to understand. Along with addressing a client's health issues, I take time to help them organize the nutrition program so that it's not just a good idea but 'user friendly' and applicable in everyday life.
