Getting your insurance to pay for nutrition visits

Insurance coverage for nutrition counseling depends on your plan type and diagnosis. Here's how to maximize your benefits in Washington:

Step 1: Check if you have a covered condition
Call your insurance and ask if 'Medical Nutrition Therapy' or 'dietitian services' are covered. Mention your specific condition (diabetes, kidney disease, eating disorder, etc.).

Step 2: Get a referral
Most plans require a referral or prescription from your doctor. Ask for a referral to a 'Registered Dietitian for Medical Nutrition Therapy' and make sure they include your diagnosis code.

Step 3: Find an in-network provider
Insurance pays more (or only) for in-network dietitians. When you submit your request on Bark, add your insurance provider to your requirements so you'll only hear from nutritionists who accept your plan. If your top choice is out-of-network, some plans still offer partial reimbursement.

Step 4: Verify benefits
Before your first appointment, confirm:

  • How many visits are covered per year

  • Your copay or coinsurance amount

  • Whether prior authorization is needed

  • If telehealth visits are covered the same as in-person

No coverage? You can still use HSA/FSA funds for nutrition counseling. Ask about payment plans or sliding scale fees.

How much does a nutritionist cost in Spokane, WA?

Based upon the latest Bark data, market research and regional estimates, the average monthly cost for nutrition counseling in Washington is approximately $135. Keep in mind that while rates in Spokane are competitive, specialized counseling (like eating disorder treatment or medical nutrition therapy) may carry a higher premium. Many insurance plans cover registered dietitian visits. The national average is around $135 per month, with costs varying based on session frequency, credentials, and your specific nutrition needs.

Estimated investment by payment structure based on your location:

  • Monthly subscription (4 sessions): $122 - $155

  • Single session (60-90 min initial): $122 - $162

  • Follow-up session (30-45 min): $74 - $101

  • 6-session package: $554 - $702

  • 3-month program: $365 - $446

With insurance: Most covered visits have a copay of $15-50 per session instead of the full rate.

The value of professional nutrition counseling

Hiring a dietitian is an investment in your long-term health. Beyond just telling you what to eat, a nutrition professional in Spokane teaches you how food affects your body, helping you build habits that prevent chronic disease and improve quality of life for years to come.

Important credentials to verify

Don't be afraid to ask about a professional's background. Credentialed dietitians hold RD or RDN credentials from the Commission on Dietetic Registration and must maintain continuing education. These credentials ensure they follow evidence-based practices and can provide Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT). Note: The term 'nutritionist' is not regulated in most states, so always verify credentials.

Ways to reduce your nutrition counseling costs

If you're on a budget, start by maximizing insurance benefits—get a referral from your doctor if needed for covered conditions. Ask about package pricing, which often reduces the per-session rate. Virtual nutrition counseling is typically 15-25% less expensive than in-office visits. Some dietitians offer lower-cost initial consultations or free discovery calls to ensure you're a good fit before committing.

I'm looking for the root of your health concerns. There is no cookie-cutter approach when working with me, even if you have received the same diagnosis as another client of mine. I help you work on all of you - physical, mental, and emotional. I partner with your primary, your therapist (if you have one), and any other practitioner in your care team. My approach is to teach you how your body is functioning and how it should be functioning. From there, we co-create a plan to help you reach your optimal health goals. We start with food and build from there, including any necessary supplementation, coaching, and guidance so you feel supported every step of the way, and potentially testing using the latest cutting-edge tests to help get the most accurate information from your body.

How important is a healthy diet to someone’s health and wellbeing?

A diet that is tailored to the individual is a truly healthy diet. Even some foods labeled as healthy, may not be for that individual. Getting to the bottom of what that person needs, based on functional lab testing, can reveal nutrient deficiencies, gut microbiome imbalances, and depressive moods due to those nutrient deficiencies.

What do you love most about your job?

Seeing the moments of connection, helping prevent illness, working with those who have tried everything and nothing seems to work as I'm often the last ditch effort. Helping those clients see their value, their worth, and that they deserve to heal.

What inspired you to start your own business?

Well, I like to do things my way, which isn't always conventional. I don't just tell someone what to eat. I help them make the decisions independently and celebrate their successes. I meet the client where he or she is at and I check my ego at the door. If the client is open to the spiritual side of life, I will bring that into the session as well. I am not afraid to sit with someone who is having a PTSD break or who is so depressed they can't find the energy to get out of bed. In my other clinics, I wasn't able to do that. I feel it's important to see the person in front of me and not just what he or she is eating.

Why should our clients choose you?

Because I'm amazing! No, seriously - I value my clients and know that I work for them and not vice versa. I do not lose sight of why I am in this field. I chose to come into this line of work because I lost my mother when I was 5 and became my grandmother's caretaker by age 11. I knew there was a better way to live, and I wanted to help people live their healthiest lives. If I can prevent one child from losing a parent too early or a parent from losing a child too early, it's all worth it!

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

Yes! I see clients both in-person and virtually. I use a HIPAA-compliant zoom for those who are too far or wish to be seen virtually.

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

I help the clients boost their own immune systems so that they can be more confident being out in the world and, if they do get sick, can rebound faster.
