I believe capturing the "decisive moment" is where a photo becomes a living thing rather than a casual capture of reflected light. I also believe deeply that if the subject is the flesh, the light is the soul. A great photo is created, not "taken" ! These are some of my guiding principles. Depends on the shoot. But generally, the most important question is "What would you like the purpose or end result of having these photos be ?" For head shots, some questions might be is this for a business presence, an actor or performer portfolio, etc. That might determine whether the shoot would be against a subdued backdrop or outdoors with natural lighting, city or country, etc. For personal portraits some questions might be "When you look at these in 20 years, what do want to feel ?" Something like that would apply especially to family or senior portraits. For band pictures, it might be "what image to you want band to project ? Vibrant ? Tight ? Cerebral ? Crazy ? So many questions.....:)
