Returning to in-person work after the enforced experiment with telehealth during the pandemic has been invigorating. With couples and children in particular it makes a difference to be together in the room. Yet there have been unexpected benefits to becoming comfortable on-screen as well, which have carried over to the new new normal. For many clients, having the option to do a session from home helps enormously with maintaining momentum in our work together, e.g., not suffering frequent interruptions from childcare hiccups, inclement weather, work conflicts. The frictional costs of traveling to an office, planning for traffic, etc. were easy to overlook or minimize when there didn't seem to be any alternative. With respect to in-person versus telehealth psychotherapy, it turns out that the perfect need not be the enemy of the good. As with so many other aspects of life . . . .
It is a great privilege to encounter and engage with people who are taking the courageous step of seeking help for problems in living. The opportunity to continuously learn from my clients keeps the work fresh. The satisfaction of assisting an individual or a couple in freeing themselves from painful patterns of thinking, feeling and relating never gets old.
I have worked in clinical and school settings which have broadened my understanding and honed my skills as a psychologist. But working as an independent practitioner affords the greatest opportunities for developing trust and engaging with clients in a way that is most likely to be effective in achieving the lasting changes they seek.
I am highly educated and have decades of experience, can deploy a range of interventions as appropriate, have a sense of humor, take feedback well, listen intently, don't jump to conclusions, express myself clearly, and care about the people who come to me for help.
I can provide services online for New York State residents. I use a secure platform integrated with my scheduling platform that is very convenient for clients--you click through a link and we start. During the pandemic, I was pleasantly surprised to learn how effective online therapy can be. Since returning to the office, having an online option has been very helpful in supporting continuity of the work, as it can accommodate travel schedules, workday appointments, last-minute childcare or weather issues, etc.
