Sophie Grillet Artist & Art Consultant

Washtenaw

I am a Photographer, Artist and writer in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I bring an artist's eye to my photography, with an awareness of composition, character and the quality of light in every picture. Whether photographing people or property, my intent is always to provide something a little bit special and memorable - more than just the standard representation. UX and web content writing - I aim for simplicity and clarity without ever being dull. As George Orwell said, "good prose is like a windowpane." I design, and write all the content for arborartconsulting.com and westsidearthop.com. Sophie comes from the UK and studied art in London, has a BA in Visual Communication, and is a trained Docent at the University of Michigan Museum of Art. She is the director of Westside Art Hop in Ann Arbor. She also represents other local artists as an Art Consultant with ArborArtConsulting.com.

What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?

A great photograph requires acute awareness of light, and an instinctive grasp of composition. Since these things are fleeting, capturing them at the right moment brings life, individuality and uniqueness to a photograph. Whether architectural, family group, still life or portrait, my aim is to go beyond the formal to bring out the exceptional in the subject.

What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?

For a portrait or headshot: What aspects of your character would you like to project? Competence and authority at work? Approachability? Compassion? Humor? Joy? Thoughtfulness? Where do you prefer to be on the formal/informal scale?

For property: what kind of buyer are you looking to appeal to? Do they want a family home? An upmarket business location? A good quality space for manufacturing?

What do you love most about your job?

Variety and freedom. Working with different people, and the opportunity to be creative.

What inspired you to start your own business?

Although I can and do work easily with teams, as a creative person I enjoy being my own boss.

Why should our clients choose you?

I'm nice to work with! My prices are reasonable and my first priority to to have happy customers. I look forward to hearing about your project :)
