California bookkeeper FAQs

What is the difference between a bookkeeper and an accountant?

Within California's complex regulatory environment, bookkeepers and accountants fill distinct and crucial roles.

A bookkeeper manages your daily financial records. They are foundational, handling data entry, bank reconciliation, accounts payable/receivable, and payroll. This is especially critical in California, involving complex withholdings for federal and state income taxes, State Disability Insurance (SDI), and regular filings with the Employment Development Department (EDD).

An accountant acts as a financial strategist. They analyze the bookkeeper's data to prepare financial statements, provide business advice, and, crucially, handle tax planning and preparation. They are essential for navigating the multi-layered system of federal taxes, California's high state income and franchise taxes, and a complex web of city and county sales taxes and local business regulations.

When should I hire a bookkeeper?

It's time to hire a bookkeeper when:

  • You are spending more than a few hours each month on bookkeeping tasks yourself.
  • Your financial records are falling behind or becoming disorganized.
  • You are not confident in the accuracy of your financial reports.
  • You are preparing to apply for a loan or seek investment.
  • Your business is growing, and the number of transactions is becoming overwhelming.
  • You need to focus your time on growing the business rather than on administrative tasks.

How much does it cost to hire a bookkeeper in California?

The cost of bookkeeping services in California can vary based on location and complexity. On average, the hourly rate for a professional bookkeeper in California ranges from $45 to $75. This figure will differ depending on the scope of work, transaction volume, and the bookkeeper's experience.

On a monthly basis, most small businesses in California spend between $200 and $425 on bookkeeping services.

When the customers ask for their financial reports and I give them right away because their records are always up to date. This surprise them that how quickly they can access their financials so this makes me happy to see them satisfied and impressed by my service.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I decided to operate in a unique way compared to traditional accounting firms, by having extremely flexible operations at the most competitive price. Most of the accounting firms charge high prices and have a minimum limit for bookkeeping which I decided to give this flexibility to my clients without minimum requirements.
